  • @lillymunster : a fault usually opens when a big quake occurs.
    by Edano 6/23/2011 5:07:28 PM

  • @all.. is it me staring at the leaning light pole or does the stack behind it seem to be leaning some also?
    by dean 6/23/2011 5:10:48 PM

  • @dean On TEPCO cam?
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 5:11:47 PM

  • @Edano Right, TEPCO has been very careful to edit out unflattering things like giant holes in the ground or extremely damaged parts of buildings in their press photos.
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 5:12:35 PM

  • @lillymunster , I read it. Here are my suggestions:
Should read:"….installed quickly at higher elevations of the power plant premises. For example, there are two ….."
"We suggest…." instead of "It is suggested…."
"They appear to be…." I get a line break after the be.
by Peter Melzer 6/23/2011 5:13:59 PM

  • yes @lilly
    by dean 6/23/2011 5:14:40 PM

  • @Peter.. I agree.. it seems like there was one photo showing the bermed area behind #4 plant that sloped up to some office buildings that had water marks on the grass or green weeds...

Re tsunami inundation - this historic Google image posted here by Jeff Reid on March 31 clearly indicates the water-line at Dai-ichi right after the tsunami hit on March 11, and lends support to TEPCO's investigations.

  • @lillymunster : tell me if you need an aftershock list ;)
    by Edano 6/23/2011 5:17:15 PM

  • good photo es
    by dean 6/23/2011 5:21:31 PM

  • @es , note that the electrical transformer station uphills from unit 1 looks undamaged. Remember we saw on later pics that its large front gates are buckled in.
by Peter Melzer 6/23/2011 5:21:46 PM

  • @ES, thanks for the photo - will double check it against the TEPCO reports to see if water areas match.

@Dean - I saw that yesterday when someone else noticed. I have some old cam images. Will try to do a compare. There were slight mis-aligns of the towers before that could be seen on TBS cam. I think there may be some changes again
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 5:24:08 PM

  • @Peter, have your changes. If I double check ES's image and don't find new data are you ok with publishing with your changes made?
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 5:24:42 PM

  • @Peter Melzer Yes. It looked to me like the transformer station's major damage came from the impact of #3's blast.
    by es 6/23/2011 5:25:32 PM

  • @you Or #1's...?
    by es 6/23/2011 5:25:55 PM

  • @es do you know the date of the arial view of #1 you posted earlier? wondering if it was before or after the 7.? aftershock
by Elaine Kirk 6/23/2011 5:28:04 PM

  • @Elaine Kirk No, sorry.
    by es 6/23/2011 5:30:47 PM

  • @es , I am pointing this out, because radioguy thought the station damage might have been caused by the tsunami waves running up the hill. Tepco shows on its flood map that water did not reach there, and this pic. corroborates it. The later damage to the big doors is substantial. A large chunk must have hit the building. Now was it the explosion at unit 1 or unit 3? The direction the small debris is scattered on the hillside points to 3.
by Peter Melzer 6/23/2011 5:42:41 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I agree.
    by es 6/23/2011 5:43:35 PM

  • @lillymunster , the piece looks great, :)
by Peter Melzer 6/23/2011 5:43:39 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I will schedule it to post then.

Work begins to retrieve fallen device inside Monju reactor

    TSURUGA, Japan, June 23, Kyodo

Work to retrieve a device that fell inside the vessel of the prototype fast-breeder reactor Monju got under way in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, on Thursday night.

The Japan Atomic Energy Agency, which operates the reactor, said it aims to complete the task by Friday and then conduct preparations to resume normal operation of the reactor by this autumn.

Last August, the cylindrical 3.3-ton device used for fuel exchange fell inside the reactor vessel while it was being lifted out after work to exchange fuel was completed.

  • @all trying to figure out the best time of day to have certain content on the group web update. Late in the day US hits Japan just waking up. Really early AM in the US hits the EU just waking up and IIRC mid day Japan? I will look at our statistics tracker but I don't know if it gives me region data on viewers. Thoughts on when to post new info?

  • @Edano those workers are wearing no protection surely they should be
by Elaine Kirk 6/23/2011 5:58:01 PM

  • The overhead photo ES posted of the tsunami water matches TEPCO's water inundation map of the plant.
    by lillymunster 6/23/2011 6:01:29 PM

  • @Peter Melzer I just wondered about that beacuse of reports of villages where houses that should have been above the tsunami waterline based solely on tsunami height were hit as the wave continued its surge up the hill. That's all based on topography and surge. Once eliminated, that leaves more questions. It's like peeling an onion (complete with tears).

  • @lilly is there anything you want tweeting?
by Elaine Kirk 6/23/2011 6:20:22 PM

  • @lilly re timing maybe when the scrib is busy is the best indicator
by Elaine Kirk 6/23/2011 6:22:55 PM

  • @lilly,, I think posting should be at your convenience and as you see it best fitting the overall picture... we can support getting information to you and on an ongoing basis some will overlap into the next day..
    by dean 6/23/2011 6:25:44 PM

  • @Elaine Kirk Thinking sending out the unit 1 fissure now and see if we can tweet and cross post that for the next up to 12 hours. Then set the water article for what is really early morning here. Scrib seems to be busy that hour or two before I get online. Then we can start pushing that story as it goes live.

BTW, you can schedule posts to go live on the site at any time you want it to so you don't have to be there hitting a button. ;-)
