  • Hi all! Forgive me if this is a re-post...I've been out all day..............................High level of radiation exposure estimated
A group of doctors has found that the estimated level of accumulated internal radiation exposure for people living in Fukushima Prefecture has exceeded 3 millisieverts.

The researchers, including doctors who have provided medical care to A-bomb survivors, conducted analysis on the food and urine of 15 residents in Iitate Village and Kawamata Town in Fukushima Prefecture. These areas are about 40 kilometers from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

They estimate that residents have been internally exposed to up to 3.2 millisieverts for about 2 months, measuring from the date of the accident in March until early May.

Three millisieverts is 3 times higher than the long-term annual limit for ordinary people recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection.

One of the researchers, Nanao Kamada, says people should refrain from eating vegetables grown in the area where high levels of radiation have been detected. www3.nhk.or.jp

  • @smoss at 9:29 PM - The video is of Shimane NPP where the equipment for filtering the sea water it uses for cooling at it no. 2 reactor became clogged with jellyfish and had to be cleaned manually. In the mean time power output was cut by 50,000Kw. No radiation was released. Cheers!! just those pesky jellyfish.

  • @dh Thank you! You're amazing!
    by smoss 6/24/2011 2:30:50 AM

  • @smoss, the neutronics safety calculations in reactor physics always addressed the excess reactivity, rod (control and safety rod) worths etc. it's measured in units of reactivity called dollars and cents. so no matter what types of fuel's used they have to meet the requirements and the main reason is to protect the fuel cladding in accident conditions. I belive thatbecause there was MOX fuel and it's inherent characteristics for being so reactive that makes the control rods less affective

  • @dh thank you I enjoyed reading your summary and on that note I will say g'night (that brought the biggest smily to my face-jellyfish) did you know jellyfish don't like the colour red and avoid it? maybe tepco could send their squirty painty thingummybob round to..............night all

  • @Veenie Did the levee fail to the Missouri side - as in the two warnings are related?
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 2:54:21 AM

  • @nancy, in that link there is another link for the chart strips etc.. but I thought you had those alread
    by dean 6/24/2011 2:54:34 AM

  • @lillymunster It says continued.so yes they are related
    by Veenie 6/24/2011 2:54:59 AM

  • @dean Grabbed the PDF . I have not read that report yet. I have the chart strips saved somewhere, there were concerns they would go bye-bye or get changed by TEPCO.
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 2:55:24 AM

  • @Veenie The good, it failed again on the Missouri side, not the Nebraska side. The plant is on the Nebraska side. The bad, that is the second levee along there to fail in a week. Both were on the opposite side so far.
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 2:56:25 AM

  • @lillymunster So, this means, it takes stress of the route to the NP's ?

  • @Veenie To Cooper yes, two levee breaches upriver on the opposing side. This is further down river from Calhoun.
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 2:58:13 AM

  • @Veenie Or the entire thing is getting water logged and collapsing....but I won't think about that.......
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 2:58:49 AM

  • Now they're saying next month for the decon unit......."Problems were expected along the way, he said, but added that he wanted to get the system fully operational by the end of June and running stably by mid-July."

    by Veenie 6/24/2011 3:00:19 AM

  • @Lilly Definitely not. I've been away all day...how is the flooding in Nebraska?
    by LM 6/24/2011 3:00:59 AM

  • @lilly.. cooper plant is probably negotiating a deal for a shutdown and still get paid because it was an act of God...

  • @Veenie I must admit I feel the same way. I did some research a while back on Areva and their systems are all for low level contamination. This level of contamination has never been dealt with in this manner before.

  • @Lilly A little scarier every day. We can just hope they're being more proactive than at Fuku. I'm just way too cynical these days.
    by LM 6/24/2011 3:05:28 AM

  • @LM There was an interview with people from the two power companies today. They left big parts of information out of their answers. The manager from Cooper kept saying how they had all these multiple generators and extra fuel. Failed to mention where those generators are located. Are they in the basement like Fuku or up on a roof or an upper level? They have some of their diesel storage underground. Failed to mention if they have a way of sealing that off so it doesn't get water in it. Just lots of things like that. columbustelegram.com
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 3:08:19 AM

  • @wtm they look busy today. I'm curious what the red and white crane is doing. If it is prepping 1 for the tent or something else.
    by lillymunster 6/24/2011 3:09:20 AM

  • @Lilly Ugh! I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Keep everyone in the dark seems to be their motto.

  • Fallen device retrieved from Monju prototype reactor
    TSURUGA, Japan, June 24, Kyodo

A device that fell last August inside the vessel of the prototype fast-breeder reactor Monju was finally retrieved Friday, paving the way for resuming its normal operation by the autumn, the plant's operator Japan Atomic Energy Agency said.

The cylindrical 3.3-ton fuel exchange device fell inside the reactor vessel while it was being lifted out after a fuel exchange, but attempts last October to collect it failed because it had become misshapen and caught against the vessel's lid.

A crane was used in the latest operation, which took about eight hours, at the plant in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, as the device was taken out together with part of the upper lid where it got stuck. english.kyodonews.jp
