  • @bo Hi and thank-you for your delightful comments earlier. Really, they cheered me up! So much so in fact that you've won my Quote of the Month despite June not yet being over - there's no prize, but my personal congratulations! Your post most succinctly sums up our current sorry state of affairs for me: "It's the same as them saying, well, at Fukushima the buildings were painted blue, all of our reactors are painted green."

  • @es thanks! That's brings a smile to my face. Glad to be able to cheer you up.

"Mountain climbers earnestly striving to reach a mountain peak proactively choose a roundabout climbing route when it is difficult to advance directly towards the peak. The essential point is not “taking risks to climb directly forward,” but rather “being certain to arrive at the peak.” The flag at the mountaintop which I am seeking has not changed."

  • @dean , gm, Smoss's vid. post last night showed the site of this plant nicely. You can't pick a more difficult place to build. So cost was not a concern. Looks like the planners picked it with the worst case scenario in mind. If the plant ever blows up, the steep slopes will direct the thrust out to sea. Very telling!

    by lillymunster 6/25/2011 1:30:28 PM

  • @dean The water filtration is working great, 2500 tons in 2 days. That meets their goal of 1200 tons per day. It will get better as problems get ironed out.

  • Anyone know what contract company was doing the shroud replacements at Fuku? Started reading Rbeaner's article. It mentions that process was contracted out to a foreign company that brought in out of country workers to do the welding.

  • I was out most of yesterday working on a feed for about 40+ people. I had some interesting conversations along the way. A friend who studies Japanese history was very interested in what I had been working on. He had been following things I post to Facebook. Had a long conversation about the earthquake upgrades or lack thereof at Fuku and the corporate culture in Japan today.
A friend who is from Minot said thing there have gone from bad to worse. Much of the town is on the north side of the river sort of on a peninsula from everything else. All the stores and major roads out are on the other side of the river. So they are desperately trying to keep one bridge open. A good percentage of town is under water and at one point water was rising a foot an hour. Lots of people staying at friends homes or at the air base.
Had a rather ironic exchange at the store with the teen daughter. Ramune is a type of Japanese soda. She has a thing for Japanese junk food. Of course she wanted to buy some. So I am trying to explain why I won't let her buy it. She asks me why, I explain it could have radiation contamination in it possibly from the water and until we know assurances on production I won't let her buy it. Point out the whole Fukushima thing, how it is impacting water and other food safety. She asks me point blank "Why would Japan do this!?. Huh. Pretty good question..... So much in one question. I explained that it was not as much Japan as it was TEPCO. But the question just struck me. From someone not following all the subtle details it does seem like insanity to have let this happen.

    by Bobby1 6/25/2011 2:03:47 PM

  • @lillymunster You keep blaming TEPCO but the reality is that this would be just as bad anywhere else in the world. If you want to point fingers, blame the nuclear industry as a whole. General Electric, Toshiba and Hitachi are also to blame in this particular case.
by Pedro Jesus 6/25/2011 2:07:02 PM

  • It's just as bad blaming TEPCO for the water decontamination and filtration system not working properly. It's not TEPCO's workers who have been installing it, it is AREVA and Kurion sub-contractors.
by Pedro Jesus 6/25/2011 2:09:07 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus that was my point, it is all these subtleties of GE, and all these other companies. Throw is some complicity from GoJ and a culture that ignored the risks and let companies do whatever they wanted. It is such a complex scenario how do you sum it up in one sentence?

  • @lillymunster It's our own fault. All of us who allowed the nuclear industry to proliferate.
by Pedro Jesus 6/25/2011 2:14:42 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus true and the series of events in Japan's nuclear industry didn't happen overnight. With what has happened in Japan and the US Missouri river NPP mess, it makes my head hurt that we still have people who want to go along as normal and change nothing.
    by lillymunster 6/25/2011 2:17:04 PM
