  • My last rant for the day....how can we have free speech and freedom of the press when we allow major corporations with various vested interests to own and control networks? It drives me insane. Big nukes, big oil, big natural gas and big coal all seem to be manning the puppet strings!!
    by LM 6/24/2011 7:38:35 PM

  • why do you think there are warnings on cigarette packages ? they are not printed in order to protect smokers, the reason is, that they protect the cigarette industry from being sued as it happened once in the US. that's the real reason.
    by Edano 6/24/2011 7:40:08 PM

  • @LM You can add big government, big pharma... big anything. Big seems to be the problem.

  • I've had touch coffee this morning! So sorry...I just Want people to wake up and stop being pod people. I love all of you for being here and having a dialogue and circumventing those industries!!

  • @Edano That is why the most effective strategy is lawsuits. Hit them in the pocketbook, the only thing they understand.

  • @Veenie good morning veenie. you are too late.

  • @Bobby1 : that's why they invent "safety limits". :)
    by Edano 6/24/2011 7:42:54 PM

  • @LM well, now we go globalization critical. it's all about the same issue.

  • i can find no study on radioactivity effects on plankton. at least, increasing UV radiation seems to harm plankton seriously : www.answers.com
    by Edano 6/24/2011 7:56:23 PM

  • "Effects of the ozone hole in Antarctica have already been seen in
some of the organisms. Most of the Antarctic organisms have a low
tolerance for UV radiation since for most of the year, hardly any
direct sunlight reaches the continent. With the reduced ozone in
springtime, UV-B radiation has been able to penetrate the
atmosphere with a higher intensity. Already, on the base of the
Antarctica food chain, an impact has been felt. UV-B radiation has
already reduced the plankton populations by between 6% and 12%.
Consequently, species higher up have felt the impact."

  • Radioactivity in the Ocean:
    Diluted, But Far from Harmless

With contaminated water from Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear complex continuing to pour into the Pacific, scientists are concerned about how that radioactivity might affect marine life. Although the ocean’s capacity to dilute radiation is huge, signs are that nuclear isotopes are already moving up the local food chain. e360.yale.edu

  • @Edano @Elaine Kirk That graph represents dates well before the sea radioactivity releases, it is due to contamination of the air getting in the water.

  • Tepco report to nisa/meti on the tent if those pipes etc are to scale then they are actually leaving a large area of roof space unfiltered and I thought hydrogen had to have different pattern to the piping ? nothing in English nor is there likely to be they got the iaea onside so have stopped pretending that they want to be open www.tepco.co.jp

drinking water -use a water filter
    clothes - wash them
ground for planting put 2cm of new soil atop the contaminated soil

  • "The nuclear industry is responsible for the ozone hole. Radioactive gases like Krypton-85 appear in increasing amounts due to the bomb tests, releases and accidents at nuclear reactors and especially from the nuclear fuel recycling plants. Krypton-85 goes up to the stratosphere where it creates ice crystals which catalytically enhance the destruction of ozone by the fluorhydrocarbons." Strahlentelex (March 3, 1994)

  • "The language of a summary of the results also reflected reluctance to give the IAEA anywhere near the enforcing power it has against nuclear proliferators — which includes referral to the U.N. Security Council.
All member states "were encouraged" to commit to apply IAEA safety standards, for instance. And the working groups "suggested" that internationally accepted stress tests be implemented by all states with nuclear energy programs. The summary also said a mechanism "could be developed" to initiate random IAEA expert checks of nuclear reactors.
An IAEA report ahead of the Vienna conference reflected the limitations of depending on voluntary compliance. It faulted Japan for failing to implement a number of IAEA safety measures and recommendations in the years leading up to the Fukushima nuclear disaster."

  • @Edano I dont know what the answer is but I think the days of electing government on the basis of party policies has to change we need to have more thorough vetting of candidates , too many uninformed people elected they are gullible to the spin from big corps

  • Those T-Hawks are not radiation-hardened, are they? They're just ordinary drones, I thought.
    by Bobby1 6/24/2011 8:53:34 PM

  • @elainekirk Maybe in a Neil Young song, but that's not reality. In the US will vote taxes and spending. Those are the only issues that matter in the ote.
    by RBeaner 6/24/2011 8:53:55 PM

  • @Rob in SF whilstever we have a situation where a country can refuse a neighbouring country to take samples of sea water then pretending they are an international body with oversight of the nuclear industry is farcical the IAEA have the potency of a rabbits fart

  • @elainekirk I would imagine if China had publisized what they were doing, prior to doing it. There would have been no problem. That PRobably wasn't the only thing they were doing, China is a totaliarion gov.
