  • @dean , re. the safety relief valves, that was my understanding as well. When the valves automatically open to reduce the surging pressure in the RPV, the steam escapes, the water in the vessel boils away, and its level plummets. That is exactly the course shown in the scram log of unit 1 edano posted last week. Intriguingly, the reactor protection system worked in the first minute or so, since the water levels were restored at the end of the log. The interesting part is what happened next, but the log was cut short.

  • @Pedro Jesus Edano posted it earlier. : Hosono wants to shrink evacuation zone in July

Japan's newly appointed minister in charge of the nuclear disaster says he hopes to shrink the evacuation zone around the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant by mid-July.

Goshi Hosono said in Tokyo on Tuesday that control over the facility has been improving little by little.

The plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, has said it aims to complete by July 17th the first stage of its plan to put the facility under control.

Hosono said that by then he hopes the reactor cooling system will have been stabilized and there will no longer be a risk of a hydrogen explosion. He said if that is confirmed, he wants to have some evacuees return home.

  • Fears heavy storms will worsen Fukushima nuclear crisis
A former Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) vice president said the company's biggest worry in dealing with the accident at the Fukushima nuclear plant was the prospect of heavy storms washing radioactive materials into the environment.
Enomoto, who stepped down from his current post as an adviser to the company following a shareholders' meeting Tuesday, said TEPCO's "biggest fear" was the possible impact of heavy rain dumping water on the stricken plant.
He said storms could also flood the basements and trenches under the affected reactors, triggering the contaminated water now collecting there to overflow.
"We need to get on with the water treatment process," he said.

  • On June 22, 2011, we received an instruction document, from Nuclear and
Industrial Safety Agency (NISA), entitled "Instruction to submit reports
related to injection of nitrogen to the reactor containment vessel of Unit
2 at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station"*, and with regard to the
injection of nitrogen into the primary containment vessel of Unit 2, we
have checked and reported to NISA that we need to implement the nitrogen
injection and the influence on the environment of the site periphery by
the injection is not as big as the exposure dose in daily life.

    Las Conchas Fire

    KSFR News

June 28 ,10 a.m. UPDATE – Los Alamos lab officials are now confirming that tens of thousands of 55-gallon drums containing radioactive waste are stored in the open, near the site of the fire. KSFR had earlier spoken with two watchdog groups who characterized the number as 30,000.

The groups say the drums are essentially out in the open, covered by fabric.

Lab officials initially wouldn’t confirm the reports but this morning told the Associated Press the drums are in fact there, awaiting shipment to the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant.
They say the drums are on a paved area with few trees nearby and would be safe even if a fire reached the storage area. Officials have said it is miles from the flames. Watchdog groups put the distance at about three miles. From Santa Fe Radio one hour ago:
