  • I have been trawling through old reports and came up with this bit of old info. JAPAN - A Japanese delegate to the Nuclear-Free Pacific Forum in Sydney, MR. KANOGU SEKIGUCHI, has said that more than 6,280,000 workers had been exposed to dangerous levels of radiation at Japan's 21 nuclear plants. He Said the eight electrical companies controlling the Japanese plants had enormous political power and refused to give details of many accidents which had resulted in deaths of plant workers. Another Japanese delegate, a doctor who survived the Hiroshima atomic bomb attack, said the U.S. had grossly underestimated the number of people killed in the attacks at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dr. SHUNTARO said it was now known that about 160,000 inhabitants of Hiroshima had died within a year of the bombing in 1945, compared with the American estimate of 60,000. In Nagasaki he claimed 70,000 had died compared with the U.S. estimate of 28,000. ("The Adelaide Advertiser", 30th September 1980)

  • @Peter Melzer It's endemic. Every response plan we've seen play out in reality fails because it counts on infrastructure that is compromised as well, because it's, you know... a disaster, or it's so ill-coordinated you have twelve groups planning to use the same facilities, and then it has to become the hospital or
    t some such.

  • @Lurking Tehachapi CA still running in the mid 20's to 30s, Their background is 6.

  • @Jo : 6 million workers ???
    by Edano 7/10/2011 3:12:23 AM

  • @Lillymunster - good to know. I think the west coast will see more exposure from Japan. It's the jet stream and ocean currents.
    by Lurking 7/10/2011 3:13:40 AM

  • how many inhabitants has japan ? 60 million ?
    by Edano 7/10/2011 3:14:04 AM

  • 127 million
    by bo 7/10/2011 3:15:25 AM

  • @Peter Melzer Oh, and some fail because they were never meant to be used, because humans are so perfect, so they were never adequate to begin with.
    by RadioGuy 7/10/2011 3:15:42 AM

  • 34 million in metro Tokyo alone
    by bo 7/10/2011 3:15:47 AM

  • @Edano , I just copied what I found Edano. I dont know if it was a typo or not.I found the info on www.nuclearfiles .org
    by Jo 7/10/2011 3:16:15 AM

  • So a fifth the current population of Tokyo? Can that number possibly be real?
    by RadioGuy 7/10/2011 3:16:49 AM

  • @RadioGuy , yeah like emergency coordination centers, because we won't have one!
by Peter Melzer 7/10/2011 3:17:08 AM

  • I think there must have been a missed decimal or something...
    by RadioGuy 7/10/2011 3:17:10 AM

  • My forehead is worn out... no more facepalms or headdesks for me till I see if insurance will cover it as an RSI. ;)
    by RadioGuy 7/10/2011 3:18:38 AM

  • Maybe that's TEPCO's evil plan... make us beat ourselves to death. :)
    by RadioGuy 7/10/2011 3:19:53 AM

  • Fukushima fuel rods removal can begin in 10 years
An expert on decommissioning nuclear power plants says work to remove fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant can begin in 10 years.

Koji Okamoto made the comments in an interview with NHK on Saturday.
Okamoto said the reactors and the containment vessels at the Fukushima plant were thought to be destroyed in a meltdown.

He said the situation in Fukushima is 10 to 20 times worse than what happened at Three Mile Island, where only a small portion of the fuel rods melted down, all of which remained inside the reactor.

He said with experience gained from the Three Mile Island accident, the planned 10-year span is possible.

Asked about residents' hope of returning home, he said some people within a 20-kilometer radius of the plant may be able to go home if the radioactive contamination is properly controlled as suggested in the plan.

However, he said even a small amount of radioactive material from the fuel rods poses a danger and that TEPCO needs to disclose information quickly and accurately for the safety of residents .

    by bo 7/10/2011 3:39:40 AM

  • Everything is still standing. It'll take us a while to know if there has been damage to the systems.
    by bo 7/10/2011 3:44:14 AM

  • @bo yes, at least the No4 sfp didn't collapse
    by Jo 7/10/2011 3:48:21 AM

  • @Jo I am grateful for that. I have a vague plan to head straight to the airport at Fukuoka (south from here) if that happens.
    by bo 7/10/2011 3:49:00 AM

  • @bo Everything looks pretty calm, no smoke, no steam, nothing hanging at a concerning angle (more than it had been). Very lucky the tsunami didn't amount to much. They have so much cabling and hoses strung across the ground.
    by lillymunster 7/10/2011 3:50:36 AM

  • @Bo, good idea. Even Arnie says if #4 goes then GTFO!
    by Lurking 7/10/2011 3:52:44 AM

  • @bo I would do the same thing...

  • They either have some good wind going or some minor shaking.
    by lillymunster 7/10/2011 4:02:33 AM

  • i wouldn't have expected that #4 sfp withstands a 7.3.
    by Edano 7/10/2011 4:02:45 AM

  • @Edano agreed. I was ready to head south when I saw the notification.
    by bo 7/10/2011 4:03:20 AM

  • As to radiation doses, NISA report p V5: "The first environmental radiation monitoring conducted on March 13 was announced by NISA at 7:30 on March 14, and it observed higher than 30 µSv/h in some area. From 20:40 to 20:50 on March 15, environment monitoring at 3 locations by a monitoring car travelling around Namie Town, 20 km northwest of Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS, detected
maximum of 330 µSv/h outside of the car. This data was announced by MEXT at 1:05, March 16. " 330 microSv/h corresponds to 2.89 Sv/y. Now this I'd call an ALARMING situation!

  • edge of the knife, do they say that ?
    by Edano 7/10/2011 4:05:41 AM

  • @Edano, at a moment's notice. I am ready. Probably there is an equivalent Japanese saying. @Peter Melzer do you know of any?
    by bo 7/10/2011 4:07:37 AM

  • @Edano I do hope someone in NISA makes plant inspection of buildings public.
    by lillymunster 7/10/2011 4:09:54 AM

  • @lillymunster : i am still wondering that the crane took up his work so fast. i thought they must be checking the pipes and buildings for the rest of the day. strange.
    by Edano 7/10/2011 4:11:35 AM

  • @Edano 10 mph winds 91 F temp - I think those are small aftershocks on the TBS cam.
