@RonD Everyone assumed those huge heavy buildings in a quake zone were anchored to solid bedrock. They are anchored to a shale layer. I don't think you have to be a civil engineer to realize how big of a problem the water issue on top of the quake damage and movement would be. I wish someone could do some sort of ground scan. I bet the basements of the buildings are broken along where we saw a fissure start at #1 and end out the far side of #4

To what Radioguy etc were talking about this morning on food. I found a food storage guide that gives time frames for storage of things like rice.

@lillymunster tepco were ordered to do sounding but I havent as yet seen anything more than a rehashing of old docs which themselves only say 'we cant be arsed' basically
by elainekirk 7/9/2011 8:29:36 PM

@lillymunster maybe a page could be put together by the foodsters ?
by elainekirk 7/9/2011 8:30:07 PM

@elainekirk That would be a good idea, they know the data far better than I do, sounds like it is time to start adding some of those documents to the site.
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 8:36:02 PM

tepco say they will start removing fuel from the sfp's in 3yrs
www.asahi.com methinks the pools will collapse long before then

by elainekirk 7/9/2011 8:40:37 PM

@RonD Thanks, yes that is the one I was referring to.
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 8:49:05 PM

@RonD The buildings at Fuku are supposedly anchored to this shale layer. I really need to re-find those documents. But the shale layer sounded pretty unstable as in it could move in a quake where true bedrock would have been solid. So you have lots of water under the plant, a shale layer and a big quake, lots of potential for movement. There are bunches of employee stories that came out last week telling of broken pipes, etc. Some of the other employee accounts talked about cracks in buildings and containment concrete during the quake.

@cat try this one
mfile.akamai.comby lillymunster 7/9/2011 8:54:39 PM

@Edano yes, this is the first time TEPCO has admitted this. There was also a TEPCO higher up that leaked the instability of 4 out to people last week. I think TEPCO's PR facade is falling apart.

@Majj did any of the radiation airflows make it down your way or did this all pretty much stay in the northern hemisphere?
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 8:57:16 PM

@cat when I tried it, it put up some sort of error message but did work. I am using Firefox. So there may be something odd in their data going out on the feed.

Concerns still over levees around Nebraska plants
www.mercurynews.comby lillymunster 7/9/2011 9:06:17 PM

@Majj That would be incredibly ugly. I know at least in the US there seems to be a renewed interest in living abroad. It seems to be more than just US to Europe also.
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 9:10:28 PM

@Majj that Forbes article reminded me of some of the older radiation exposure incidents they have had in the US. During WWII young women working in an airplane factory used radium paint to paint instrument dials so they glowed in the dark. They would wet their brushes by sticking them in their mouth. They all became sick or died. Far before this, probably 1800's to early 1900's Radium springs and radium water was considered healthy....until people got radiation illnesses or cancer and died. In the 1950's they used xray machines to determine shoe size in some stores. They also would xray pregnant women frequently to view the fetus. All of these lead to cancers and were stopped.
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 9:16:16 PM

@Majj shouldn't they be planting something other than commodity crops or is that what the Brazilian govt. wants people to plant?
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 9:17:57 PM

Another twitter to follow. This is for the mothers group in Japan that is protesting the govt. lack of safety for children in Japan and Fukushima. They are also asking for help getting the word out about what they are doing so retweets, passing their information or stories on will help them.

@Majj so no rules on the govt. subsidy? Some of our US subsidy is tied to what they grow. Sadly the biggest subsidy is for corn and soybeans rather than healthy foods.
by lillymunster 7/9/2011 9:25:15 PM

@Majj Totally agree. Things are really the same everywhere just different window dressing. I see the same things being done to people in Japan that are done to people in the US just with different minor details. Seems to be the same govt. problems also, they listen to money and big companies and individual people get screwed.

@Majj what would this guy be hauling that is giving off that much radiation? Even medical radiation gets transported in lined containers.
