  • @Edano , nuclear weapons were deployed in Germany in the late 1950s. So why not?

Documents reveal U.S. plan in mid-1950s to deploy nuke arms in Japan
TOKYO, Aug. 4 Kyodo - The U.S. government sought to promote the peaceful use of atomic energy vis-a-vis Japan in the mid-1950s to pave the way for eventually deploying nuclear weapons in the country by easing the antinuclear sentiment of the Japanese people, according to top-secret U.S. government documents found at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration. The declassified documents included a letter, dated Nov. 18, 1955, to Reuben Robertson, deputy secretary .

  • @Peter Melzer The articles from Greg Mitchell I was reading talked about the Soviets being close to invading Japan. I had no clue about that before. Maybe it had something to do with that?

  • @Edano - are you still here?
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:05:19 PM

  • @hudebnik glad you had it it should solve mysteries
    by elainekirk 8/4/2011 6:06:02 PM

  • Whilst creating others, like with so many surveys how come they didn't notice the hotspots earlier??
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:07:03 PM

  • @hudebnik yep.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:07:47 PM

  • @Edano - great! Would it be possible to expand the vertical scale on your reactor #1 radiation overflow graph to show a bit more detail of the high readings? The graphs are amazing. Love the way you are gradually adding further info to them.
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:10:06 PM

  • My nasty suspicious journalist's mind wonders if there is any connection between apparent high radiation readings and newly-discovered hotspots around #1...
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:11:37 PM

  • @hudebnik : due to members' wishes, it' s now a logarithmic scale. so high values will be close together. the advantage is that low readings can be read better.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:13:02 PM

  • I dont think we have had this up yet even though it is from yesterday www.tepco.co.jp

    by elainekirk 8/4/2011 6:16:12 PM

  • @lillymunster , of course it had all to do with that. The Soviets planned to be at the Atlantic seaboard in 48 hours. Counting the overwhelming force in numbers, NATO thought nukes would deter such plans. They deployed an arsenal ranging from nuclear backpacks over nuclear artillery shells to short and mid-range missiles in West Germany. If I recall correctly, there were something like 5000 pieces stationed in West Germany alone. The Soviets followed the same logic on their side. And the French had a plan for an own nuke shield, once the resistance collapsed on German soil. Guess, where that was supposed to be? Certainly beyond French borders, that is across Germany. Needless to say that only one nuclear warhead would have been enough to change life in Germany forever. There still are nukes in Germany today, but the threat seems remote.

    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:24:57 PM

  • Re. the Tepco radiation surveys, from the maps they have carried out around 63 surveys of various parts of the site since 20th March.
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:25:52 PM

  • @hudebnik yes it is strange. they have never been above 300 before. but we can only guess. i wonder if the instruments are even made for such high readings.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:26:50 PM

  • and yes, i will extend the scale a bit. but i want to wait if there are new records in the next time.

  • @Edano - ty. And #1 temps are trending up a little?
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:28:40 PM

  • @hudebnik yes, but they are tending lower on a bigger scale. i think tepco suspended cooling in the last days a few times.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:30:55 PM

  • all temps tending to decrease, but #2 and 3 are stll far away from 100°.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:32:26 PM

  • Agreed, esp. #3
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:33:17 PM

  • the progress on 2 and 3 is minimal.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:33:21 PM

  • there was also a sudden but slight bump in pressure readings of #1 after the 6.5 earthquake on sunday. i guess this could mean something has broken.
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:35:52 PM

  • maybe the nitrogen is leaking. indicating a containment breach. ???
    by Edano 8/4/2011 6:37:35 PM

  • There's so much we still don't know!
    by hudebnik 8/4/2011 6:38:28 PM

  • @elainekirk : at first they throw nuke bombs, then they vaporize japanese fishers and afterwards they sell them nuke bombs and plants. it is like educating a complicated child. and they still act like a mistreated child.

  • River temperature forces nuclear plant to 50 percent power [4 August, 2011]: timesfreepress.com
"Not even TVA can beat the heat.

On Wednesday, the utility had to bring a third reactor at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant down to 50 percent power to avoid environmental sanctions because the water in the Tennessee River — where the plant's cooling water is discharged — already was at 90 degrees.

"When the river's ambient temperature reaches 90 degrees, we can't add any heat to it," said TVA's nuclear spokesman Ray Golden."

In response to show how a rice inspection of radioactive materials and Fisheries for the county four days in Europe than 0.15 micro sievert per hour was the maximum amount of space radiation in June and July, Ichinoseki, Hiraizumi announced a province in its own examination of the four municipalities of Fujisawa. First, preliminary inspection of the harvested rice - one week before harvest in late September. If you have more than 200 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium, the inspection of this study point to increase after harvest, to be able to confirm the safety of the ship.

    by lillymunster 8/4/2011 8:36:55 PM

  • @elainekirk The standard line taught in school is that the bombs were dropped to shorten the war and in the long run save lives. Not that everyone ever bought that completely but there is so much coming out with time that people here just were not widely told.
    by lillymunster 8/4/2011 8:38:59 PM
