KORIYAMA, Fukushima Prefecture--Mention grass to scientist Mitsuo Kondo and he gets excited.

On Aug. 4, the professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture conducted an experiment to decontaminate irradiated grass in Fukushima Prefecture.

Kondo used Ose Park in Koriyama, about 60 kilometers east of the stricken Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant, for the experiment.

Kondo's method involves mowing grass so deeply that the roots are barely spared.

  • Elaine, I would definately think that tepco would have had cameras around that facility that would have operated up until there were power failures and unless they had some on battery power or diesel power they would have lost that information..
    by dean 8/5/2011 1:31:27 AM

  • @dean I am wondering if they can still remotely read measuring devices in and around the reactors then they are going to be getting the in vessel/containment
    camera images too
    by elainekirk 8/5/2011 1:33:25 AM

  • the measurement devices in and around the reactors would have been reading but remember thepower failures, over ranging of some instruments to the point of only showing trends etc... for those that are strickly pneumatic and not electronic they would have indication so it's hard to tell what they set up after the power resumed

  • Indian Point May Enlist Giuliani as Defender
This has been a tough year for the long-beleaguered Indian Point nuclear plant. In January, a longtime critic, Andrew M. Cuomo, was sworn in as governor, and proceeded to push for the facility to be shuttered because of its proximity to New York City and its susceptibility to earthquakes and terrorist attacks. Then, in March, a tsunami precipitated a reactor meltdown in Japan, stoking new fears about the safety of nuclear power plants, especially those near population centers.

Now, Indian Point’s owners, confronted by that intensified political opposition and public unease, are preparing a public relations campaign. And, seeking a way to counteract the determined governor, they are turning for help to a tough-talking former New York mayor, Rudolph W. Giuliani.

The Entergy Corporation, the operator of the two reactors at Indian Point, which generate as much as 30 percent of New York City’s power, has been in talks with Mr. Giuliani about headlining a major advertising campaign aimed at allaying public concerns about the facility’s safety. The campaign would effectively pit Mr. Giuliani, an erstwhile Republican presidential candidate, against the governor, a Democrat.

TEPCO demands bill payment from a mushroom farmer who cant pay the bill, because mushroom sales went down to nothing. The farmer asked compensation. No from TEPCO, because 'it's just because of the fear of radiation, not actual harm done by radiation.' Then, the farmer asked to delay the electricity stop (because it will destroy his mushroom in greenhouse), but TEPCO said no to him. The doc from TEPCO said, no compensation for any damage due to electricity stop (because the farmer is supposed to pay, anyway) To complaints from the farmer, the TEPCO worker said, "Sue us. We will fight against you."

    by elainekirk 8/5/2011 10:12:56 AM

  • @elainekirk the drywell is the upper part of the lightbulb, the part that is usually dry. the wetwell is the lower part.

  • but i don't know where the gauge is exactly.

  • @elainekirk At least this guy is wearing a respirator. Notice the battered pipe flange to the rear of his rear, and is that a crack (?) in the concrete in the right corner of the pic... Cool! Arne Gundersen vetted my thought that the 10 s/hr was deposited by condensation over time and not by the explosion. I think Peter Melzer is right that it is air-operated valve 73, think it's blown, and steam is wisping thru to condensate in the air handling room and the stack. There's no air pressure to speak of in rpv to trigger valve to open, so think it must be stuck open. Sorry to post and run-have to hit the shower and go.
    by M.I.A. 8/5/2011 10:15:18 AM

  • @M.I.A. in fact, there is a pressure drop in #1. it corresponds to the 6.5 eq on sunday and the 10 $v reading next day. i think some valve must have cracked or even the containment.

  • @Edano to publish those pics with no real written explanation stinks of 'we have informed that there is a problem' without actually informing
    by elainekirk 8/5/2011 10:29:04 AM

  • @elainekirk : it may well be that the eq cracked the ground and the containment.

  • Japan says will continue exporting nuclear power technology

    TOKYO, Aug. 5, Kyodo

The Japanese government decided Friday to continue with its policy of exporting nuclear power generation technology for now after reviewing the policy in the wake of the disaster-triggered crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The Cabinet approved a document that said it believes Japan should provide nuclear energy technology to countries that wish to have it while ensuring that the technology's safety is of the highest global standards.

The latest move, which effectively gives priority to maintaining good diplomatic ties with countries with which Japan has already entered into negotiations to export such technology, is expected to draw criticism as being inconsistent with recent remarks by Prime Minister Naoto Kan. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Utilities to be probed for influence peddling

Industry minister Banri Kaieda says an independent panel has begun investigating allegations that nuclear safety regulators repeatedly tried to influence public symposiums on the use of nuclear energy.

On Friday, Kaieda told reporters that a third-party task force is looking into claims that the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency intervened in town meetings with the help of local power companies.

He said the panel will thoroughly investigate allegations that Chubu and Shikoku electric power companies, under the agency's instructions, lined up participants and requested that they ask prearranged questions in favor of nuclear power.

He added that Japan's other major utilities will also be subject to investigations for potentially engaging in similar dubious conduct.

Kaieda said that he wants the task force to propose a set of guidelines on to what extent the government should be involved in organizing public symposiums.

  • Good morning! Since the question came up the other day, according to this BWR manual www.iaea.org , Table 3.3.6.1-1, when the reactor operates the radiation levels should be smaller than or equal to
    Drywell 138 Roentgen/h 1.38 Sv/h
    Reactor Building Exhaust 60 milliRoentgen/h 0.6 milliSv/h
    Refueling Floor 20 milliRoentgen/h 0.2 milliSv/h

The conversion into Sv/h pertains to gamma radiation.

  • Health Canada “negligent” on Fukushima nuclear-radiation threats, Liberal MP Joyce Murray claims. .......despite sustained levels of iodine-131 that far exceeded allowable levels, “government officials claimed there was nothing to worry about”.

“The quantities of radioactive materials reaching Canada as a result of the Japanese nuclear incident are very small and do not pose any health risk to Canadians,” Roslin quoted Health Canada as saying on its website. “The very slight increases in radiation across the country have been smaller than the normal day-to-day fluctuations from background radiation.” www.straight.com
