  • A-bomb survivor in Fukushima remembers Hiroshima

85-year-old Minoru Oka, a survivor of the Hiroshima bombing, marked the anniversary of the attack in his native Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday.

Oka was 19 years old and serving as a soldier in Hiroshima when the bomb fell. He was about 2 kilometers from the explosion.

Oka says he remembers people crying for help and water.

When the war ended, he returned to his home town, Minami-Soma in Fukushima prefecture, to raise cattle.

But the nuclear accident in March suddenly changed his life again.

Oka had to dispose of his cattle when he was forced to evacuate from his home located about 30 kilometers from the damaged nuclear plant for a month.

After he began to raise cattle again, the government banned the shipment of beef cattle from Fukushima due to fears of radioactive contamination, dealing a severe blow to the old farmer.

Oka says he sees no difference between an atomic bomb and a nuclear power plant because both can inflict fatal damage on human beings.

He says Japan needs to find an alternative source of power, and consume less.

He adds that if Japan continues to operate nuclear plants, it should be on the condition that their operations can be halted safely at any time.

  • Are we sure Busy said Fukushima is 300x worse than Chernobyl? I know there's a posting of one of his talks that says as much. I listened to it all before, and just listened to half of it again and never heard that claim. He did say based on one car filter that the air in Tokyo is more contaminated than at the peak of cold war nuclear-bomb testing by a factor of 270 www.youtube.com , which sounds possible but at odds with then also saying it's also 300x worse than Chernobyl. So I'm wondering if this claim is misattributed to him.
    by Ian 8/6/2011 5:26:22 PM

  • @Ian it is in the video I posted earlier and quoted by somebody in the examiner

  • @Edano hard for Hiroshima survivors going through this :(
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 5:43:01 PM

  • @elaine, okay yeah, the author of www.examiner.com attributes the 300x-worse claim to Busby, but doesn't give a direct quote. So I wonder if she just saw the video title and assumed he said it. I recall a video title about Ft Calhoun with an erroneous claim that included Arnie's name that gave the misimpression that Arnie made that errant claim, which he didn't. I don't see how Busby could have said 300x worse than Chernobyl and said other things that he has.

  • @Ian the examiner report should just be pulled it is a load of ...
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 5:53:13 PM

  • The autor links to part 4 of the 5-part video series, as if that's where the claim is made. I'm listening to that part again...
    by Ian 8/6/2011 5:57:12 PM

  • @Ian you are a patient person
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 6:08:51 PM

  • @Ian Busby certifies the poisonous, radioactive Japanese air to be at least 300 times worse than the air during the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster www.infiniteunknown.net
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 6:11:34 PM

  • @elainekirk That's simply ingenious: using donated car air filters to test for radiation. Hard to calibrate, but Busby should certainly be competent to do that.
    by RadioGuy 8/6/2011 6:18:40 PM

  • But that article also just says Busby says that, and it also says he says "Japan is 1,000 times higher than radioactive “fallout” at the peak in 1963 of H-Bomb detonations by the nuclear powers." But in fact he only says more by a factor of 270, as seen in the opening of part 2 of the series : www.youtube.com So what to make of this?
    by Ian 8/6/2011 6:18:46 PM

  • I can't find any point in his presentation where Busby says 300x worse.
    by Ian 8/6/2011 6:19:49 PM

  • This does show one sort of hidden danger in stories gaining widespread piecemeal internet coverage: reliable stories get posted by fringe sorts which when seen there discredits the original unless it's linked, and also, pieces get latched onto out of context, sometimes badly out of context.
    by RadioGuy 8/6/2011 6:21:12 PM

  • @Ian maybe yo could go fire final bullet at the examiner alarmist by telling her
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 6:21:13 PM

  • Yes, I posted a comment to her examiner article, but I don't see it yet.

  • i find the nuclear industry that uses "nuclear" and "safety" together in one sentence at least 1000x worse than any busby. so come on !
    by Edano 8/6/2011 6:27:22 PM

  • @Ian @RadioGuy personally I went for the examiner womans jugular becauuse she threw a lod of copy pasted stuff on a page with no consideration for the effect it would have on the people living with fuku, after Lilly took her to task she did tone down the title but that hardly helps.
Chernobyl babies is being put into Japanese and runs in cinemas there at the end of the month, everybody will say thats factual and the people have the right to know but I think it is sick bstrds making money out of disaster .
the people need real information, there is talk today of speedi info being pulled by meti soon , people cant make decisions without it but it doesnt matter all the gobshites can flood Japan with informaion telling and showing them deformations they can expect in their children and that is information
Just peees me orff terribly when pocket liners jump on bandwagons
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 6:29:24 PM

  • I have to admit, I don't have time to watch it all now, but if there's confusion on the net, we should probably put something definitive on the website. Could someone who watched it write up a quick synopsis, especially of the contested points, and we can link in all the videos into the story under it. I'd drop it in after the Fukushima Peace headliner on the site.

  • @RadioGUy, this is where I first saw it : www.ustream.tv
    by Ian 8/6/2011 6:38:15 PM

  • I know this sounds stupid, but just to be sure isn't it the case that if I say "worse by a factor of 270" I'm also saying "270 times worse." If so, we can rule out that he says 300x worse than Chernobyl, give the bulleted list see in the first seconds here : www.youtube.com
    by Ian 8/6/2011 6:40:24 PM

  • @RadioGuy thanks. :-)

@all, if you want to do something effective about the examiner article use the "report" link and give them both barrels about how inaccurate it is and that she is misquoting people (liability issues). If enough complain they might pull this woman as a contributor or at least watch what she posts or warn her. As far as I know Examiner pays people for writing articles and I think it is based on page views so scandalous, conspiracy type content is easy pickings for page views. All she needs to do it get it in news feeds or a link on godlikeproductions or AlexJones.. :-)
    by lillymunster 8/6/2011 6:40:45 PM

  • I sent a PM to the person who mis-titled the video. The answer to my question below about factors is yes, so there's no doubt that he didn't say Fuku is 300x worse than Chernobyl. Notice that the examiner article also says 100s of millions of deaths, which I bet he also didn't say.
    by Ian 8/6/2011 6:47:19 PM

  • @lillymunster have you got the doc where nrc say there was seismic damage?
    by elainekirk 8/6/2011 6:48:10 PM
