  • Nagasaki commemorates 66th anniversary of atomic bombing

    NAGASAKI, Aug. 9, Kyodo

Nagasaki commemorated the 66th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing Tuesday, with Mayor Tomihisa Taue calling for a shift in Japan's national energy policy, at an annual ceremony to be attended for the first time by a U.S. government representative.

In his peace declaration at the memorial event, Taue is expected to call for the development of renewable energy to replace nuclear power in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear crisis, according to city officials.

Representatives of a record-high 46 countries, including James Zumwalt, deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, are set to attend. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan will also attend.

    by elainekirk 8/8/2011 10:36:01 PM

  • @elainekirk : yes always on may 1 they come together to beat the police. some years it's bigger, and some years smaller. at least for 15 years it has been like this. many tourists come to see it and police from all over the country. sometimes they lite up cars, buildings have never burned yet. violence is on both sides. there isn't any police car in berlin without damage from this event.
