  • here is an explanation of the high readings (in german) fukushima.grs.de the hot spots seem to have been localized there since 3/11, because the environmental reading posts did not measure any rad spikes in recent time.

  • TEPCO starts evaporating saltwater

The operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has began evaporating contaminated saltwater, as a way to reduce accumulated radioactive seawater at the plant.

Contaminated seawater has accumulated in the basement of the plant, as a result of Tokyo Electric Power Company injecting seawater to cool down damaged reactors after the March 11th tsunami. The utility later began removing salt and radioactive substances from the contaminated seawater, to use the filtered water for cooling the reactors.

However, TEPCO says the system has the capacity to process only 40 percent of the contaminated seawater into freshwater, leaving 60 percent untreated. As of August 2nd, there was still about 21,000 tons of contaminated seawater left at the plant.

TEPCO had been testing a new system which could reduce 80 tons of saltwater to about 50 tons each day, by evaporating the saltwater. The steam will be recycled back to freshwater for cooling the reactor. The system was put into actual operation on Sunday, after the testing was completed.

So far, 2 units have been installed. TEPCO plans to introduce 6 additional units, hoping that all will become operational by October.

    by Edano 8/7/2011 10:02:31 PM

  • but the steam is as radioactive as the water before .....
    by Edano 8/7/2011 10:03:43 PM

  • @Edano @elainekirk I think that is MBq per square kilometre (i.e. mega becquerels). As for the translation incorporating moon, it should be month not moon. The kanji for month and moon is the same. By the way, I was surprised at the variations in readings between the different prefectures....they were huge, but I couldn't see anything for Fukushima.
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:04:31 PM

  • For general interest a neighbouring local (organic) farmer here (in the UK) will be having a government body do radiation readings to establish a radiation "baseline". No idea what to make of it. Is that a standrad
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:06:48 PM

  • @Will yes, moon=month :)
    by Edano 8/7/2011 10:07:07 PM

  • sorry...meant to end Is that a standard procedure?
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:07:13 PM

  • @Will I would say not but possible that rather than use the pre fuku and have a rise they are going to use post fuku and come back in a fortnight and say to the public 'there has been no rise in radiation levels'

  • @Edano I will see if I can find out more
    by elainekirk 8/7/2011 10:15:51 PM

  • @elainkirk I am hoping to put some questions to the farmer tomorrow.
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:18:09 PM

  • @lillymunster The MEXT data you posted seems to state that the measurements are MBq per square kilometre. I think that the "M" of MBq stands for Mega becquerels. Does anyone know more?
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:21:46 PM

  • I was unsure how to properly quantify it so I posted it. The bq if it was soil makes sense but it was such an odd expression I wasn't sure what to make of it. Why March results are being released in July is really awful.

  • The increasing mental toll www.yomiuri.co.jp
    by lillymunster 8/7/2011 10:38:22 PM

  • I think that MBq is bq multiplied by 10 to the power of 6 (i.e. 1 MBq = 1 million Bq). I am terrible at maths though, so could anyone confirm this? And if this is the measurement being used what does it mean for the MEXT data of environmental radiaoactivity levels?
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:42:21 PM

  • @Will I wish I understood the figures I did physics to O'level but it was too many yrs ago now
    by elainekirk 8/7/2011 10:47:46 PM

  • MBq = 1,000,000 Bq, km² = 1,000,000 m²
    so 1 MBq/km² is the same as 1 Bq/m²
    by Edano 8/7/2011 10:49:58 PM

  • @Edano Thank you. So the readings at MBq/square kilometre equate to Bq/square metre. That means, for example, that Ibaraki-ken's March data is 120,000 bq per square metre of I-131, according to the data. Is that a one time reading, or an average over late March? These figures, for what they might be worth, seem quite high. I see that Ibaraki-ken in March last year has a measurement of 0.07 for Cs-137 but this March the measurment is 17,000. An increase of more than a quarter of a million.
    by Will 8/7/2011 10:58:42 PM

  • If Will's calculation is right that would be 92bq for a square inch of dirt.
    by lillymunster 8/7/2011 11:01:17 PM

  • @edano Sorry that should be (I think!) just under a quarter of a million.
    by Will 8/7/2011 11:01:47 PM

  • @lillymunster As I said my math is bad. I hope someone can take a look at the MEXT data you posted and do some calculations. Time to sleep here though!
    by Will 8/7/2011 11:03:45 PM

  • I will check with Peter, Dean etc. in the morning. If we figure something out I will post in the stickies. Edanos math skills are god-like so his numbers are a good starting point. :-)
