  • i still don't know what you try to find out. give me a hint ?
    by Edano 8/7/2011 11:16:40 PM

  • Why are people on twitter freaking out over these reports from METI
    by lillymunster 8/7/2011 11:18:11 PM

  • @lillymunster they make strange calculations about that you would die of radiation when you eat tokyo soil for the next 625 years .......... but you cannot easily convert Bq into Sv. it is mixed up in the article.
    by Edano 8/7/2011 11:20:35 PM

  • Maybe we should sort it out and post a short article. It might provide a sane point of reference. IIRC Elaine said the original author back tracked on his statements?
    by lillymunster 8/7/2011 11:23:59 PM

    www.j-schoenen.de

    Conversion to a radiation dose:
A general exchange of Becquerel (rad activity) in one ray dose (eg, Sievert, see below) is not possible because the different isotopes have different radioactive decay paths with appropriate radiation sources. Moreover, the effects of radiation for external irradiation to evaluate completely different than when the radioactive isotopes are incorporated.
    by Edano 8/7/2011 11:24:13 PM

  • @Edano what do you make of the comments on the article ?

Example Caesiom-137 Cs-137 decays with a half-life of 30.71 years with a negative beta decay to the metastable barium-137. The beta energies are 0.5 MeV in this decay and 1.2 MeV. Metastable, meaning that the barium passes after 2.55 min on the emission of gamma rays with an energy of 0.662 MeV in its ground state and then is stable. With the help of model calculations and measurements can be determined that an activity of around 7000 Bq of incorporated Cs-137 results to a whole body exposure, an effective dose equivalent of about 1 mSv. The consumption of 1 kg of contaminated mushrooms from Bavaria, for example 70000 Bq would thus result in additional radiation exposure of 1 / 10 mSv = 0.1 mSv. With an average annual natural background radiation of 2.4 mSv such radiation is negligible.

Gotcha. The news is... The Foreign Ministry changed its policy to convince the world of the safety of JP food. ..cont) because the 'cesium beef' became so infamous. Instead, they will work on information disclosur

, the ministry will stop saying 'JP food is safe,' bc everyone knows it not. Instead, they will disclose accurate info. ) Whether or not the Foreign Ministry has 'accurate info' about food is a completely different story ;-)

  • @lillymunster
The officers were very polite and happy to talk to us. We asked them if they were concerned that they were standing outside all day with no protective gear and they told us their bosses have assured them it is perfectly safe and so they have to trust them. We told them about the readings we’d taken just steps from where they were and offered to show them personally that the levels were incredibly high – they declined saying they needed to trust the authorities. Which was weird, because to most people – they are the authorities. We measure radiation all the time, and were noticeably shaken after seeing the readings we just had, and these guys were being told there was nothing to worry about. Suddenly some sort of commanding officer arrived and told us we had to leave and everyone stopped talking to us. Like turning off a switch.
    by elainekirk 8/8/2011 1:14:51 AM

  • @lillymunster how can they do this, what kind of morals do they have ?
    by elainekirk 8/8/2011 1:15:26 AM

  • The police? I am guessing they feared trouble from superiors more than risks from radiation. I have seen police put in some really screwed up situations they didn't agree with but do it anyway or risk losing their job or being punished at work. There is a reason the stress levels are so high in the job. There were multiple police units in Wisconsin who were forced to act as the governor's personal goon squad who wanted nothing to do with it but could'nt lose their jobs.
    by lillymunster 8/8/2011 1:23:25 AM

  • @lillymunster yes they have a blummin tuff job
    by elainekirk 8/8/2011 1:25:38 AM

  • I am sure a few of them talked about the incident when they got home or over a beer after work. On duty they have to do as told. I hope one of them manages to get a superior to get a clue. They need more than just dust masks in that area.
    by lillymunster 8/8/2011 1:27:19 AM

  • @lillymunster they wont get masks they have been put there to show how safe it is, they want the people to go back soon kitting the police out with masks may cause 'panic' tralalalalala
    by elainekirk 8/8/2011 1:30:52 AM

  • @elainekirk I don't know if the police in Japan have a strong union like they do in the US. If they do their union could put the smackdown on the situation and get the labor ministry involved.
    by lillymunster 8/8/2011 1:32:42 AM

  • @lillymunster it won't happen the minister will have civil servants who have been there yrs, who know how good the power companies are, how much they put into gov, a minister cant do much without civil servants behind him

  • We were trying to sort out some numbers on METI readings. Edano did some numbers and his calculations, they didn't look insanely high. More expected due to fallout. If you have a chance to look that them and let us know what you think?
