  • since 1945 we have a steadily increasing background radiation due to opening of pandora's box and we still wonder why we have increasing cancer rates all over the world ? and still iaea and icrp and other criminals tell us radiation is safe ? do they think we are stupid ? ridiculous.

  • Elaine, is the iodine stories connected to the child with the high reading. IE: the children were from Iwaki where they were not told to take it?
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 1:55:28 PM

  • @lillymunster I will go read the convo see if I can tell
    by elainekirk 8/11/2011 1:56:19 PM

  • you need to read it backwards can you delete
    by elainekirk 8/11/2011 1:59:35 PM

  • @lillymunster yes, they were told not to take it. they were told to ask a doctor. but there were not enough doctors to ask.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:00:42 PM

  • they said it is dangerous to take it without advice and without drinking. this is BS.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:01:48 PM

  • So Iwaki handed out iodine and told people to wait to take it and the order to take it never came?
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 2:04:26 PM

  • by Edano 8/11/2011 2:05:15 PM

  • @lillymunster I have sent you the convo by mail @edano's links say that yes central government didnt tell local government the readings

  • @lillymunster yes exactly.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:06:08 PM

  • and let's not forget about this "official" link: www3.nhk.or.jp
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:13:08 PM

  • @Edano The Iodine was a short term exposure problem. The younger the exposed, the greater the problem. Sievert IS adjusted from isotope and exposed organ to an equivalent whole body dose. iT IS NOT ADJUSTED FOR AGE AND THUS SUSEPTIBILITY TO DAMAGE. Can you give again the link for 35 mSV?
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:14:48 PM

  • @RBeaner all is in my last 3 posts.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:15:46 PM

  • i still don't understand if the 35 mSv is an external or internal equivalent. the icrp recommendations are external exposure rates.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:17:14 PM

  • @RBeaner we are putting it all together
    by elainekirk 8/11/2011 2:19:17 PM

  • @lillymunster @elainekirk the biological half life of iodine is 80 days. so it is okay to take the iodine dose as soon as there is a problem. you don't have to wait for the "right" time. the protection will last several months. so it is bullshit to tell the people to wait. www.gesundheitxxl.com

  • Was the does calculated based on factors or a thyroid scan? I can't quite sort that out from the information
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 2:25:15 PM

  • @lillymunster it is based (extrapolated) on the thyroid scan result.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:26:06 PM

  • @Edano Alls I'm getting at, is that there is threat with rad exposure. At what point does that threat from rad exposure exceed the threat from bus exhaust, theme park rides and water skiing or playing football. These are common activities and they have a low level of danger associated with them. Low level radiation exposure has some level of risk associated. I acknowledge that one is a chosen, voluntary risk, whereas the other is imposed on a victim against their will.
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:26:49 PM

  • a thyroid scan is about the same as a whole body count, only faster.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:28:18 PM

  • @RBeaner playing football causes thyroid cancer ?
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:30:19 PM

  • I would rather suck bus exhaust than get a 35 mSv dose to the thyroid.
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 2:31:37 PM

  • @Edano No, but they both have some level of generic health risk. Please look at this www.lanl.gov which says the bio half life only applies to what is actually taken into the thyroid.
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:32:32 PM

  • Good morning, as to stable potassium iodide distribution the NISA report fukushima.grs.de states on page VII-8:
"2) Policy for distribution to evacuated residents and their administration of stable iodine The Chief of Nuclear Emergency Response Headquarters will, on receiving advice from the Nuclear Safety Commission, give instructions to the related cities, towns and villages on the dose of stable iodine by evacuated residents, although the designated cities, towns and villages will distribute stable iodine to residents for administration in the presence of medical experts. This is due to concerns for side effects associated with the dose administration such as allergies.
Stable iodine is stored in the offices of cities, towns and villages and it is necessary to decide on the procedure to precisely distribute the stable iodine to residents in the event of a real evacuation. In this case, because the preliminary distribution of stable iodine to residents is not appropriate, the cities, towns and villages are to adopt necessary measures so that they can securely distribute iodine to their residents according to various types of evacuation as described below. It is also required that the local government do not unnecessarily stir anxiety among residents while keeping them fully informed."

  • out for awhile
    by elainekirk 8/11/2011 2:34:09 PM

  • @lillymunster I believe "35 mSv dose to the thyroid" is a misnomer. I think Sievert is a "converted, Whole body" exposure. But I am not sure. In Fact this is a question. I f a statement is made of "35 milliSievert", is that an equivalent whole body exposure? This in the case of a child would mean their thyroid (if I-131 was the issue) had recieved approx 20 x or 700 milliSievert of radiation....???
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:38:32 PM

  • @RBeaner i was talking about the preventive effect of taking non rad iodine, not of the effects of J131. due to the long thyroid half life, the protective effect should remain for some months.
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:39:02 PM

  • @Peter Melzer good finding !
    by Edano 8/11/2011 2:40:44 PM

  • Meaning, pills were handed out, perhaps not to everyone, and the municipalities were waiting for the recommendations of medical experts whom they should advise when to take them.
by Peter Melzer 8/11/2011 2:41:35 PM

  • good morning every one
    by dean 8/11/2011 2:41:47 PM

  • @Edano I admit some confusion on the uptake of iodine (stable or otherwise), but I've seen instruction that says you have to take those potIod tablets every day for several days. That leads me to believe the body disposes of excess iodine constantly and is always looking for replenishment. The body doesn't store it for use, any excess is immediately refused by the body.
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:43:24 PM

  • Ok, here is the article. Let me know if I have it right or it needs changes
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 2:46:39 PM

  • Right after the meltdowns began at Fukushima Daiichi local officials in Iwaki distributed protective iodine to the residents. It was handed out with the instruction that people wait to take it until they are instructed to by announcement from the central government. There was also the caveat that it should be taken under doctor's supervision. Meanwhile in the chaos of the tsunami, earthquake and evacuations doctors were in short supply.

    The order never came.

Radiation was increasing in Iwaki as the plants melted down and exploded. The central government suppressed the radiation data from the system known as SPEEDI. As the radiation data didn't come out for months no call to residents to take the iodine was ever sent. There was also confusion distributed that the iodine could be taken after the fact, something that is medically inaccurate. The iodine is to be taken at the time of anticipated exposure to protect the thyroid from taking in the radioactive iodine.

Reports were released that identified the thyroid doses for children and then later removed from the Nuclear Safety Commission. One 4 year old child was determined by a thyroid scan to have a 35 mSv dose to the thyroid. The maximum whole body annual dose a nuclear worker in Japan could have before the disaster was 100 mSv. The maximum yearly dose a nuclear worker in Germany could have is 20 mSv. The information on the NSC's website was later removed under the claim that it included personal information about the children who were tested.

This is disturbingly high. No information about any of these children from the area receiving any sort of medical intervention has been stated. According to the NSC, they are following the ICRP recommendations. ICRP considers 100 mSv to be an "acceptable" dose for a citizen before anything should be done. We will have more on the ICRP soon, but suffice it to say they are not an impartial objective source for data.

The problem has come full circle. The government didn't act on the SPEEDI data. The government told local governments to wait on iodine until the go ahead was given. Nobody took the iodine and now children in the region are showing with radiation contamination in their thyroids. It all begs the question, was this incompetence or malice? After reading the New York Times article where government officials admitted they downplayed the nuclear disaster to avoid the cost of larger evacuations it does make one wonder what is going on in the central government in Japan.

There has also been reluctance by government officials to scan all residents in the region in a timely manner. Some people had reported being unable to access a whole body scanner to have it done. A whole body scan takes about 10 minutes and costs about 66 euros to have done. Meanwhile things in Iwaki are not getting much better. Radiation readings are showing about 10 mSv in the area. People are living with uncertainty about their safety or the realistic ability to rebuild in the area due to the contamination and lack of detailed information.
    by lillymunster 8/11/2011 2:46:41 PM

  • Same report on page 22: "As for radiation exposure to residents in the vicinity, there were no cases found to harm health in 195,345 (the number as of May 31) residents who received screening in Fukushima Prefecture. All 1, 080 children who went through thyroid gland exposure evaluation received the results lower than the screening level."

  • @dean YO... If there is a hot spot elbow on a pipe, that reads 10 Sievert/hour on contact, what does it read or generate for people at 3 ft (1 meter)??
    by RBeaner 8/11/2011 2:48:28 PM

  • point source or plane source.. that should be easy for you RBeaner
