  • @elainekirk We had 2 days of rain from the typhoon here in Matsuyama, Ehime, Shikoku. Today has been dry. Aside from some flooding nothing too bad in this part of Japan. Domestic TV right now is showing some strong winds in central Tokyo (even some trees down). The question is what will happen as the typhoon goes further north. By the way I have to agree about English weather being the worst, and I`m English. I have always much preferred the weather in Japan!

  • Fukushima nuclear plant on typhoon alert

Workers struggling to bring the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant under control are stepping up precautions in advance of the approaching typhoon.

Typhoon Roke is expected to approach Fukushima Prefecture late on Wednesday.

Efforts to install steel plates at the plant's water intake area and to decontaminate seawater have been halted for fear of storm surges. Strong winds have forced the suspension of work to cover the No.1 reactor building.

Outdoor piping and pumps for injecting water into the reactors have been secured with ropes to keep them from being knocked over by strong winds.

Rainfall of up to 250 millimeters is expected in the area, but the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company, says there is no risk of radioactive wastewater overflowing from the reactor turbine buildings.

  • Siemens, Germany's biggest industrial corporation, quits nuclear energy business . Export credit guarantee for nuclear power plant Angra 3 in Brazil
Dirk Niebel, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Germany must back out of the export credit guarantee of 1,3 Billion Euro for the construction of a second generation pressurized water reactor with a gross output of 1,350 MW planed by Siemens when construction of the facilities in Angra started in 1970. The program anticipates completing construction of its third nuclear reactor - Angra III as well as building 4-6 more in the next twenty years. Brazil is inclined to buy US facilities, according to the report of Brazilian embassy.
Uranium-enrichment plant in Resende, Brazil [3]
The Resende site, located about 100 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro, contains an operational fuel-fabrication facility, a uranium-conversion plant under construction, and the uranium-enrichment plant. The first module, which will contain four cascades, is now considered operational. However, the plant is not expected to be operating at full capacity until 2015. www.desertenergyproject.net

  • Expert urges checks of reactor interiors

An expert commenting on the accelerated plan to contain the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says the interior temperatures of the damaged reactors need to be checked.

Masanori Naitoh, director in charge of nuclear safety analysis at the Institute of Applied Energy, was speaking to NHK about the revised timetable for bringing the plant under control.

The Japanese government and Tokyo Electric Power Company updated on Tuesday their preparations to achieve a cold shutdown by the end of this year instead of in January as originally planned. Cold shutdown means temperatures of the reactors are kept stable and below 100 degrees Celsius.

Naitoh said that TEPCO is now only measuring temperatures outside the reactors. But he said that it needs to be confirmed through simulation that temperatures inside have fallen below 100 degrees.

He said it also must be proven that there are no risks of a recurrence of nuclear reactions, even though such possibilities are low.

The government and TEPCO plan to start installing new devices at the No. 1, 2 and 3 reactors next week to extract contaminated gases and reduce the release of radioactive substances.

They will also improve reactor cooling systems so that the temperature of the No. 2 reactor, in addition to that of the No. 1 and No. 3 reactors, will drop below 100 degrees.

  • TEPCO plans to cut workforce

Tokyo Electric Power Company will cut its workforce by about 10 percent in the face of ballooning costs over the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The utility needs to implement cost-cutting measures in order to be able to pay compensation to people affected by the accident.

On Tuesday, TEPCO President Toshio Nishizawa told a government panel inspecting the firm's financial situation that it will cut 3,000 to 5,000 employees.

But Nishizawa explained that the downsizing will not take place until about 3 years from now because TEPCO needs staff to deal with compensation procedures.

The panel's head, Kazuhiko Shimokobe, expressed dissatisfaction with the measure, saying it's insufficient.

The panel will compile a report on TEPCO's cost-cutting plans, which include the sale of assets, by sometime next week.

  • TEPCO Admits to 200 to 500 Tonnes of Groundwater Flooding into Bldg Basements Every Day at #Fukushima I Nuke Plant
Here are some numbers from Yomiuri Shinbun article (9/20/2011):

200 to 500 tonnes of groundwater per day to the basements of reactor buildings and turbine buildings of Reactors 1, 2, 3 and 4.

105,000 tonnes of highly contaminated water in the basements at the end of May

90,000 tonnes of this water have been processed by TEPCO up to September 13

102,000 tonnes of highly contaminated water in the basements as of September 13

    87,000 tonnes of water added

Of that 87,000 tonnes, estimated 47,000 tonnes were recirculated back into the reactors, leaving 40,000 tonnes of water to have been coming from somewhere. ex-skf.blogspot.com

  • @Edano. I have to wonder where the various temp gauges are that they are talking about. Anything in the RPV would likely be toast but they replaced a gauge for containment at unit 1 and I think 3 a while ago. I assumed they have a sensor that runs to the inside. Temps in the RPV would give them information but seem somewhat pointless now.
    by lillymunster 9/21/2011 11:53:50 AM

  • @lillymunster yes, it puzzles me, too. they have diagrams with the data where you can see the exact meter location. but they have not exchanged thermometers, only pressure gauges.
