It differs from village to village. I can ask my Kazakh friend for some data and get back to you in a few days.

There is a famous story of a former Soviet minister who came to Atomic Lake and told all of the people that it was perfectly safe, and to prove it he jumped and swam around and ordered his son to do the same. They were both dead within a few years.
by bo 10/8/2011 2:51:36 AM

@bo it would be helpful to understand the level of annual exposure that causes that level of deformity. It is so hard to get concrete information on exposure vs outcome
by lillymunster 10/8/2011 2:52:08 AM

@bo sounds like the UK reporter that went to the gates of Daiichi, got out of his truck and ran around in circles for a while. This was maybe a day before they exploded.

My colleague has seen film of the guy swimming at IAEA archives, but I have never seen it. The locals tell the story and laugh.

Of all of the places that I visit, I am most nervous when I went to Semey. And last year we didn't even go into the polygon. Next summer we will spend a whole week in the polygon and stay at Kurchatov, the former military city in the center of the test site.
by bo 10/8/2011 2:56:41 AM

As I've said before, this is difficult work to do and I advise everyone here to be sure to take time to not swirl down into horribleness of these issues, and of what humans subject each other to. We have to be strong to be able to work. That is why I always say that you have to take some time every day to think about things besides Fuksuhima or nuclear victimization.

This reminded me of some turn of the century medical museum specimens I saw. They had a bunch of deformed fetuses. Makes me wonder if radium played a role since it was used as a tonic at the time.
by lillymunster 10/8/2011 2:59:39 AM

@bo you are right and yet there is a feeling of guilt when I go do other things for awhile
by elainekirk 10/8/2011 3:00:25 AM

@elainekirk you shouldn't feel guilty. Think of it as preventing burnout. :-)
by lillymunster 10/8/2011 3:02:02 AM

@elainekirk that is totally understandable. I would advise you to look at these times as part of your work here. Taking care of yourself and keeping grounded are some of the most important things you can do in order to accomplish this work. It is part of how you stay strong. I've known many people who don't take the time to take care of themselves because of their devotion to these issues and they always burn out, yes, as lilly says. So doing other things is an essential part of your work here.
