Japan to give away air tickets to 10,000 visitorsJapan's Tourism Agency may soon be giving away 10,000 round-trip air tickets to the country in an effort to encourage visitors.
The campaign planned for next year will award the free tickets on condition the winners write about their experiences online. Winners will also fill out a questionnaire on how they feel about visiting Japan after the earthquake, and any proposals to help renew interest in tourism.
JTA chief Hiroshi Mizohata told reporters that many overseas tourists decide to visit Japan after hearing of the positive experiences of friends or acquaintances.
He said the giveaway will launch the agency's new campaign to attract foreign tourists.
The Japan National Tourism Organization says an estimated 539,000 foreign people visited Japan in September.
That's down 25 percent from the same month last year, marking the 7th month of decline following the March 11th disaster.
The decline is largely attributed to the Fukushima nuclear accident, but the stronger yen is also making travel to Japan more expensive.
The agency plans to request a budget of about 15 million dollars for the ticket offer in the next fiscal year that starts in April.

Does anyone remember waay back months ago this was talked about. There is a region in either Fukushima or a neighboring prefecture that is a national heritage area. People lived along the river, no electricity, no cars, all the homes were old very nature oriented homes. I can not for the life of me remember the name of it. I remembered it today and wonder how they are doing.
by lillymunster 10/21/2011 6:09:15 PM

@lillymunster oh I wonder if the hillside blogger ...
by elainekirk 10/21/2011 6:12:30 PM

by Edano 10/21/2011 6:16:45 PM

@Edano nope. :-) I thought all the Amish came to North America. :-)
by lillymunster 10/21/2011 6:19:19 PM

@Edano We don't have Amish out here. Lots and lots of Hutterite and Menonite colonies though.
by lillymunster 10/21/2011 6:36:35 PM

@lillymunster there is a Japanese Hutterite community, but i did not yet find out where they live.
by Edano 10/21/2011 6:37:14 PM

@Edano heh. Who knew. The place I was looking for wasn't a religious colony, it was a region of homes that agreed to not modernize IIRC.
by lillymunster 10/21/2011 6:40:43 PM

@lillymunster they live in Aizu, Fukushima Pref.
shinku.nichibun.ac.jpby Edano 10/21/2011 6:41:51 PM

70 km south of Koriyama, Fukushima.
by Edano 10/21/2011 6:44:38 PM

Owa Colony.
by Edano 10/21/2011 6:46:05 PM

I think I just found the same paper. BTW, they are not the nature area in question but ironic they are also in Fukushima.
shinku.nichibun.ac.jpby lillymunster 10/21/2011 6:50:08 PM

@lillymunster "Michi also called the Owa Hutterian Brethren colony in Japan. She spoke with the minister’s wife, Mrs. Kikuta. They are far enough away from center of the earthquake so they suffered no damage. There are only seven people at Owa now and no one speaks or understands English."

Researchers have found up to 6.15 million becquerels per square metre of soil in Fukushima city, 60 kilometres north-west of a nuclear power plant that has been leaking radioactive material into the environment since it was damaged in an earthquake and tsunami in the spring.
main.omanobserver.omResidents in the town’s district of Watari also found their Geiger counters going off their scales, which go up to 10 microsieverts per hour, Mitsuta said.
by lillymunster 10/21/2011 7:10:02 PM

@lillymunster never mind so long as they keep smiling
