  • @estacion any word on damage/injuries?
    by lillymunster 10/21/2011 7:48:53 PM

  • I saw the Unit 1 visit discussion you had this morning, but did not have time to comment. Plenty details are still unclear. Why did only one of the two isolation condensers work to begin with, and how could the cooling water in the working condenser boil away? This is supposed to be a closed-loop system as much as I know. The condenser tanks did not seem busted in the vid. Most damage seems to have afflicted class (schedule?) B and C piping. But there is severe damage to the reactor building which is a class A structure. I hear plenty water gushing and wonder where that happens. I know that the control room operator shut the only operating condenser down after 15 minutes or so to prevent the RPV from cooling down faster than instructed, that was 55 degrees C/h. I wrote about this here: brainmindinst.blogspot.com

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO AREAS WITHIN AND BORDERING THE PACIFIC
OCEAN AND ADJACENT SEAS...EXCEPT ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...
    WASHINGTON...OREGON AND CALIFORNIA.

    ... TSUNAMI INFORMATION BULLETIN ...

THIS BULLETIN IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY.

THIS BULLETIN IS ISSUED AS ADVICE TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES. ONLY
NATIONAL AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO MAKE
DECISIONS REGARDING THE OFFICIAL STATE OF ALERT IN THEIR AREA AND
ANY ACTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN RESPONSE.

AN EARTHQUAKE HAS OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS

    ORIGIN TIME - 1757Z 21 OCT 2011
    COORDINATES - 28.9 SOUTH 176.0 WEST
    DEPTH - 40 KM
    LOCATION - KERMADEC ISLANDS REGION
    MAGNITUDE - 7.4

MEASUREMENTS OR REPORTS OF TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY

GAUGE LOCATION LAT LON TIME AMPL PER
    ------------------- ----- ------ ----- --------------- -----
    BOAT COVE RAOUL IS 29.3S 177.9W 1816Z 0.10M / 0.3FT 06MIN
    FISHING ROCK RAOUL 29.3S 177.9W 1826Z 0.17M / 0.6FT 08MIN

    LAT - LATITUDE (N-NORTH, S-SOUTH)
    LON - LONGITUDE (E-EAST, W-WEST)
TIME - TIME OF THE MEASUREMENT (Z IS UTC IS GREENWICH TIME)
AMPL - TSUNAMI AMPLITUDE MEASURED RELATIVE TO NORMAL SEA LEVEL.
IT IS ...NOT... CREST-TO-TROUGH WAVE HEIGHT.
VALUES ARE GIVEN IN BOTH METERS(M) AND FEET(FT).
PER - PERIOD OF TIME IN MINUTES(MIN) FROM ONE WAVE TO THE NEXT.

    EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS INDICATE A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. IT MAY HAVE
BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTS NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. FOR
THOSE AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES ARE OBSERVED FOR TWO HOURS
AFTER THE ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL OR DAMAGING WAVES HAVE NOT
OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES CAN ASSUME
THE THREAT IS PASSED. DANGER TO BOATS AND COASTAL STRUCTURES CAN
CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS DUE TO THE CONTINUING SEA LEVEL
CHANGES AND RAPID CURRENTS. AS LOCAL CONDITIONS CAN CAUSE A WIDE
VARIATION IN TSUNAMI WAVE ACTION THE ALL CLEAR DETERMINATION MUST
    BE MADE BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES.

NO TSUNAMI THREAT EXISTS FOR OTHER COASTAL AREAS IN THE PACIFIC
ALTHOUGH SOME OTHER AREAS MAY EXPERIENCE SMALL NON-DESTRUCTIVE
SEA LEVEL CHANGES LASTING UP TO SEVERAL HOURS.

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL BULLETIN ISSUED FOR THIS EVENT UNLESS
    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.

THE WEST COAST/ALASKA TSUNAMI WARNING CENTER WILL ISSUE PRODUCTS
    FOR ALASKA...BRITISH COLUMBIA...WASHINGTON...OREGON...CALIFORNIA.

  • Radiation checks to strengthen for marine products, seawater
    October 21, 2011

The science ministry and the Fisheries Agency will strengthen testing on marine products and widen the survey for seawater for radiation contamination from the damaged Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant.

The tests on marine products will be conducted once a week, in principle, depending on the size of the fish hauls, in Fukushima, Miyagi and Ibaraki prefectures.

The tested marine products will either be bought or taken from samples on a survey ship, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and the Fisheries Agency said Oct. 20.

The government eased restrictions on land use outside the 20-kilometer no-entry zone around the plant in September. It will now test waters 20-30 km from the plant for radiation, and eventually survey seawater beyond 280 km from the coast using more accurate instruments, officials said.
