Govt releases nuclear safety test results

The Japanese government has begun posting the results of nuclear reactor safety tests on a government website.

Industry minister Yukio Edano said on Tuesday that the government aims to boost transparency before idled reactors now undergoing stress tests are restarted.

Kansai Electric Power Company submitted test results on its No.3 reactor at Ohi power plant late last month.

Edano told reporters that the results, along with exchanges of views between the government and utility, are now available on the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency website.

The industry minister said he wants the public to send opinions and questions over the test, and that the government will respond. He said exchanges of views could lead to a better understanding of the nuclear safety examination process.

  • The Fukushima worker's tweets tonight. R1's gas control system (?)
will do a test run next week, and then, will start running around at
the end of this month. A gas control system need to be done in R3, but
radiation level is still high inside the reactor. Workers will have to
work in the environment where robots have barely been working... It
must be harder than doing it in R1 or R2. These days, we have been
observing many breakdowns/failures of pumps, including the water
cleaning system and desalination system. It may not be avoidable
because the systems have to run continuously without maintenance. I
think that they should create better systems, which are not band-aids,
but there is no money to do it. The other day I read TEPCO's project
plan. According to the plan, manufacturers (Toshiba, Hitachi, and IHI)
seem to get less work; instead TEPCO's affiliated companies did get
more tasks. On the other hand, Mitsubishi got a big project. It seems
like conglomerates (eg, Mitsubishi) have bigger power than others.
Conglomerates may be able to offer competitive quotation, and stronger
political power. I am not sure that this kind of stuff (politics and
corruption) will effect in the future...
By the way, full-face mask requirement was relaxed as of today. Yet,
my group members all wear full-face ones.

  • One interesting paper that I saw in Cleveland talked about a professor at Tokyo University, Ryugo Hayano. He had over 150,000 followers on twitter soon after the quake since he was tweeting about radiation. He was told within a few weeks by Tokyo University that he was not allowed to make public statements about radiation

  • @bo, good to read ya Bo. Geez, we should collect those examples. The overall effect is probably intense. They'll silence the most important and qualified voices of dissent. There needs to be some movement / group that shines a light on such suppression gives people the strength to speak their minds.
    by Ian 11/8/2011 2:13:39 PM

  • @Ian good to read you too. Good to be back. I agree, and this is especially true in a consensus society like Japan
    by bo 11/8/2011 2:15:09 PM

  • Anyone know what's the deal with this report, that radiation levels have gotten so high at the platn that now workers need to wear lead suits so heavy they need leg-support to walk : www.youtube.com It sure seems to imply that something is getting worse, not better.
    by Ian 11/8/2011 2:15:15 PM

  • @bo, thanks! A "consensus society", yeah, interesting perspective. A social meme that the "we" must always form a consensus and outliers need to be brought in line. Auto-Orwellian. :(

  • @Ian not heard will go have a trawl though

  • As a friend of mine said here, there is a Japanese saying that the nail that sticks up needs to be pounded into place
    by bo 11/8/2011 2:19:28 PM

  • Another Japanese saying, when you need support, lean against the biggest tree. This shows why there is so much trust in large corporations.
    by bo 11/8/2011 2:21:15 PM

  • @Ian - my understanding of the lead suits was the need to get workers into the areas where the radiation is persistently high like unit 3. They just can't get the levels inside down and need to do work in there. The lead suits are extremely heavy and prohibit work. Last week they found 620 mSv/h near one of the containment doors.

  • Meanwhile, the chairman of the western Japan branch of a volunteer organisation has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling Y10.9 million (£86,972) that had been donated to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
Yoshiharu Tsuji, who was also the president of a company that operated supermarkets in and around Osaka, has admitted transferring the money to his personal bank account, Kyodo News reported.
