  • In media reports, the IAEAs foremost response is misinforming the public that there are safe levels of i131, and these are those levels. In light of a possible emergency, they quickly mobilize their resources to protect the industry from the people!

  • @MaryW, it says "Earlier on Friday the U.N. nuclear agency said very low levels of iodine had been detected eight months after Japan's Fukishima disaster." Anyone find where the IAEA says that? It sounds like this could be from Fukushima, assuming the US EPA isn't monitoring of i131, and I keep hearing that they stopped looking for radiation to safeguard the nuclear industry from the public interest.
    by Ian 11/11/2011 5:23:35 PM

  • @me, or maybe that quote doesn't imply the "very low levels of iodine" were from Fuku. ??
    by Ian 11/11/2011 5:24:52 PM

  • Off IAEA facebook Filip Talpa update (17:37CET) on www.suro.cz -- the I-131 levels are in uBq/m3 both for aerosols and gases. The levels are similar to levels after the Fuku accident. Current level cannot be caused be the Fuku accident and are probably not caused by any NPP either. www.suro.cz

  • IAEA say not from Fukushima: www.iaea.org
    by Ian 11/11/2011 5:26:16 PM

  • The weather right now in eastern Europe is from the East and is typically there. The radiation being found is only I-131. It can't be from Fuku
    by lillymunster 11/11/2011 5:26:31 PM

  • From the Czech source The measured concentration of radioactive iodine I-131 in the air to move around the levels that were in the Czech Republic in March 2011 after an accident IS Fukushima. It can be completely ruled out that the current contamination is caused by leakage from Fukushima. It is very unlikely that the cause was a leak from a nuclear power plant. For information, know that I -131 is used for example in large quantities in medicine (radiotherapy for cancer of the thyroid gland).

  • @lillymunster , the only info chart I found worthwhile watching is from Southern Germany www.bfs.de . In fig. 2 the contribution of artificial beta-emitters to airborne radioactivity is estimated on an almost daily basis. I-131 emits beta radiation as well as gamma-radiation. So this may be helpful. However, the periodic fluctuations are quite high and the latest results do not seem extraordinary. There is no word on iodine. www.bfs.de

  • 'J-Village' base to deal with Fukushima nuclear crisis shown to media

    FUKUSHIMA, Japan, Nov. 11, Kyodo

The government and Tokyo Electric Power Co. on Friday showed media organizations the ''J-Village'' sports facility in Fukushima Prefecture that is used as a base to deal with the nuclear crisis at the utility's Fukushima Daiichi power plant nearby.

Eight months after Japan's worst nuclear accident was triggered by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, work was still under way to improve the facility's environment for supporting long-term operations in responding to the situation at the plant.

All 12 soccer fields at the 50-hectare site have been diverted to heliports, decontamination facilities, materials depots, parking lots and other functions. english.kyodonews.jp

  • The thing you must know about these ratings is that they are based on the information the rated entity voluntarily provides. Was not it Moody's that wanted to downgrade the US lately? They got plenty angry phone calls from Washington. I don't think Moody's went through with the plan yet.
