  • @Edano, thank you for posting the link. It seemed relevant to the ongoing discussion of criticality and I131. A picture is worth more than a thousand TEPCO reports and obfuscations. If the EU wants to know where the recent increase in I131 is coming from, perhaps they should ask TEPCO. They have been lowering those monitor/cameras from the end of 2 of the cranes, down the south side wall of R#2 since the end of October.
    by eyes 11/11/2011 11:24:05 PM

  • @eyes If you look at the data on the EU issue it is very clear that it is not Fukushima. Only I-131 is being detected. It is coming from the east and is being detected in the east half of Europe.

  • Hi, all. Just wanted to mention that readings in Hungary were taken some distance from Paks, where the NPP is located. Budapest is 120km north, and Miskolc is approx. 200km northeast. I have no idea if this would make any difference.

  • 'According to a spokesman from Poland's National Atomic Energy Agency there were "unconfirmed reports" about a possible incident at a nuclear power station in Pakistan... On October 19, Pakistani authorities reported an emergency at the almost 40-year-old Korachi nuclear plant (KANUPP) when workers were forced to repair a leak. uk.news.yahoo.com

  • Leak at Pakistani nuclear plant, no radiation damage reported yet

    Reuters Oct 20, 2011 – 9:44 AM ET

KARACHI — A Pakistani nuclear power plant imposed a seven-hour emergency after heavy water leaked from a feeder pipe to the reactor, but no radiation or damage has been reported, an official said on Thursday.

The leakage at the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, commonly known as KANUPP, started around midnight on Tuesday during a routine maintenance shut down, said Tariq Rashid, a plant spokesman.

  • Do winds blow from Pakistan to Europe? India has NPPs, how would they fail to pick this up? Perhaps the wind blows in the other direction.
    by Ian 11/12/2011 1:03:52 AM

  • water is H2O (H-O-H)
heavy water is deuterium oxide D2O (D-O-D)
    semiheavy water is HDO (H-O-D)
superheavy water is tritium oxide T2O (T-O-T)
    H has one proton
D (deuterium) has one proton and one neutron
T (tritium) has one proton and two neutrons and is radioactive
H, D, and T are all hydrogenium nuclides.

    by Edano 11/12/2011 1:05:40 AM

  • At least the jet steams blows from west to east, the opposite path of Pakistan to Europe. But there are lower elevation winds too. @Edano, well, someone isn't reporting something leaking.

  • Possibly stealing a line from “The Princess Bride,” Exelon CEO, John Rowe, this week described as “almost inconceivable” the idea that his company might build a third reactor at the Calvert Cliffs plant in Lusby, Maryland. The two Calvert Cliffs reactors are owned by Constellation Energy which already withdrew from the project, leaving French partner, EDF, stranded. Exelon is about to merge with Constellation. Constellation withdrew due to financial concerns after the U.S. Energy Department asked for a fee of $880 million to compensate taxpayers for the risk they would take on a loan guarantee of about $7.6 billion, a fee Constellation said would doom the project. The project now looks definitely doomed, provided that word means what Rowe thinks it means. www.beyondnuclear.org
