Japan Earthquake | Page 2729

  • @MaryW Japan counterparts were too busy, out of contact or mid-crisis. There seemed to be no reporting system to share info to other countries. The NRC comments that showed how worried they were about it is interesting contrast to their now public statements how this is all no big deal and nuclear power is totally safe BS.

  • Oh, this makes me want to weep. First clue that the gov't and mainstream media 'managed' Fuku is: "But the fallout from Fukushima is far less than expected, and it is clear that the United States will not follow Germany in abandoning nuclear energy. Horrific as the Fukushima meltdown was, it's unlikely to have anywhere near the impact that Three Mile Island had, and nothing like the deadening effects of Chernobyl." energybiz.com
    by M.I.A. 12/1/2011 8:36:32 PM

  • @M.I.A. We know it was managed hard. There was an absolute shutdown of any discussion about impact here or even the accident soon after it happened.

    by lillymunster 12/1/2011 8:43:28 PM

  • @M.I.A. i cannot quite follow that statement. germany, switzerland, italy abandoned nuke power, and japan has >80% of their nukes down. sellafield closed, siemens is out of business. america is not the whole world.

  • The light flickering is more visible on TEPCO cam. You can see it reflecting up as it intensifies

  • @Edano To the nuke industry hacks in the US...it is.
    by lillymunster 12/1/2011 8:45:25 PM

  • maybe i misinterpreted the word "anywhere".

  • belgium (i think) will follow shutting down its nukes.
    by Edano 12/1/2011 8:48:02 PM

  • @Edano The US nuke industry is delusional. They write a piece somewhere every day saying that Fuku won't dent the nuke industries revival. They think if they repeat it often enough it will come true. Greed. pure greed. Nothing more than trying to keep their business model alive.

  • fire died down - still there, smaller. TBS finally woke up and hit the focus button on the camera. :-)

  • Dr Koide from Kyoto University on radio program admitted that he 'can not assume where the melted fuel is now because human-beings have never gone through such a crisis. TEPCO's assumption is baseless...suspects container vessel has already broken. Even in the Three Mile Island accident, they took 7 years to confirm melt down happened'. fukushima-diary.com

  • From Hachiko Coalition:
Tsutomu Takamura, a member of the House of Respresentative and a committee member for the Special Committee for disasters has confirmed as a member of the Japanese Government that the press release stating that the animals will be rescued is in fact TRUE and that this will indeed transpire. Mr. Takamura has stated that the Ministry of Environment and the Fukushima local officials are polishing off the plan and details will be made available.

  • TEPCO injects nitrogen into pressure vessels

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has started injecting nitrogen, an inert gas, into the pressure vessels of the crippled reactors to prevent another hydrogen explosion.

In late October, Tokyo Electric Power Company began extracting gases from the containment vessel of the No.2 reactor to remove radioactive substances. During the work, TEPCO found hydrogen accumulating in parts of the reactor at a density of up to 2.9 percent.

TEPCO started pumping nitrogen into the pressure vessels of the No.1, 2, 3 reactors on Thursday to lessen the concentration of hydrogen.

The density of hydrogen accumulating in the containment and pressure vessels is thought to be below 4 percent, the level where an explosion could occur.

TEPCO says the nitrogen injection will push out hydrogen and reduce its concentration.

Keeping hydrogen density low is an indispensible condition in the second step of the process decided upon by the government and TEPCO to resolve the nuclear accident. They are aiming to achieve a state of cold shutdown for the reactors by the end of the year.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency plans to assess how well TEPCO can manage hydrogen levels.

  • The faint orange glow over Unit 2 www.youtube.com happens to appear exactly in the same line-of-sight space as the crane. Which implies it might be a yellow/orange electric light located on the opposite side of Unit 2 is shinning on it. This in turn might suggest that the yellowish light on the S side of Unit 3 is also just a colored electric light.
