  • thank yous ~ good suggestion to bring christmas into her room (just in case) - but let's hope not. Still we (+my sister) might have to substitute her preperations which I had hoped to be stayed in her hands (question of self-affirmation and dignity).
I'll kind of give it the weekend to recover that first (not unexpected) 'depression' and take direct action from monday.

@lillymunster that could be that town but not the perspective. I can't fond it ad hoc - but I'll search for that very impressive video showing the wave coming up-river (~12~min recording) tomorrow (?) and give you the link.

  • @Vivre I might know the one? Was it where it all slowly (at first) came in a city street and then just started uprooting buildings? I remember that one. There is also a video of it coming up river and going over the flood walls. Both rather memorable

  • Noda declares "cold shutdown" of reactors

Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda says the crippled reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have been successfully brought to a state of cold shutdown.

The state is a target in the second phase of a timetable established by the government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company to bring the plant under control.

At a meeting of the government nuclear disaster task force on Friday, Noda declared that the reactors are now stable and that the second phase is complete.

He said radiation levels at the periphery of the plant site will remain low if another accident occurs.

Noda added that many challenges remain, such as having people who evacuated due to the disaster return to their homes.

He stressed the need to facilitate decontamination work in no-entry zones and government-designated evacuation zones around the plant.

He also stressed the need to facilitate disposal of contaminated debris, including the establishment of temporary and permanent storage facilities.

Noda also said the government should do all it can to help evacuees return home.

  • Japan gov't declares 'cold shutdown' of crippled Fukushima plant

    TOKYO, Dec. 16, Kyodo

The Japanese government announced on Friday that the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant has achieved a stable state of cold shutdown, in a sign that the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl has been brought under control nine months after its outbreak.

''We have decided that a stable condition has been achieved and that the accident at the plant itself has been settled,'' Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda told a meeting of other Cabinet ministers, while ordering them to move ahead with the work of scrapping the stricken nuclear reactors.

But he also said that the government faces a host of issues in the aftermath of the accident, such as the work to clean up the vast tracts of land contaminated by radiation and to realize the return of people forced to evacuate from around the plant. english.kyodonews.jp

  • Towns seek decommissioning of Hamaoka nuclear power plant

    SHIZUOKA, Japan, Dec. 16, Kyodo

The assemblies of two municipalities near the suspended Hamaoka nuclear power plant in Shizuoka Prefecture passed resolutions Friday seeking the decommissioning of the plant or opposing its relaunch.

In Yoshida, located in a 20-kilometer radius of Chubu Electric Power Co.'s power plant, southwest of Tokyo, its town assembly unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the government to scrap the plant, which has five reactors, without restarting any of them and develop alternative energy sources.

In Fujieda, in a 30-km radius of the plant, its town assembly unanimously passed a similar resolution the same day opposing the relaunch of the reactors at the plant unless measures are taken to ensure the ''absolute safety'' of the residents. english.kyodonews.jp
