    by Majj via Ute-koczy.de 12/19/2011 9:44:13 PM

  • @Majj the problem is that angra 3 was a joint project of siemens and areva. siemens quit the project after fukushima, but areva still insisis on the german credit guarantees. it is a little complicated to solve.

The new Belgium government is also right wing, if I'm not mistaken. Funny country, Belgium. They spent over one and a half years without a government and things still worked well all around. Here in Portugal, we haven't been without a Government ever and things seldom work at all.

  • Areva / Siemens to build the nuclear plant had therefore requested a guarantee in 2002. Until recently, the Hermes guidelines, the funding of new nuclear capacity but expressly excluded. After the parliamentary elections in 2009 was the turning point. The Franco-German nuclear company renewed its guarantee application and the new government of CDU / CSU and FDP simply changed the rules. translate.google.de

  • @Majj @Edano If E.on buys a share of Portuguese EDP we can expect a whole new batch of renewable energy power plants flourishing in Portugal, Germany and Brasil. That is guaranteed. I've got my fingers crossed.
by Pedro Jesus 12/19/2011 10:37:16 PM

  • of course, in this case, the french government will assume the guarantees. :(
    by Edano 12/19/2011 10:37:25 PM

  • To put it into context, EDP, one of the world leading renewable energy companies in the world, is being privatized and German E.on, which is bent on renewable energy research and development, is bidding for a fair share. The flourishing Brazilian energy market is one of their biggest goals. It's a win win situation.
by Pedro Jesus 12/19/2011 10:43:33 PM

  • @Edano They can't afford that. We're not so small and EDP still has the biggest share in renewable energy. I believe E.on is converting their interests into the renewable market, according to their website, although it might be only a PR facelift. Anyway, EDP is the leading energy company in local micro-production projects and it's totally decentralized. To give you an example, the south region of Portugal where I live, the Algarve, consumes over 80% of renewable energy from different renewable sources including independent home micro-power plants. We have to trust someone. Our government has been granting subsidies to micro-production. Because we enjoy a lot of sun all around the year and because solar panel appliances are becoming more and more affordable and efficient, this type of local energy production has been flourishing in this region. There's still a long way to go but we're getting there. Portugal is a very good example to other more developed countries around the world. We're second in the world in wind power energy and there are a hand full of new research and development in that and other «green» areas going on as we speak. I expect to live long enough to see the day when the last coal plant will be decommissioned. We don't get many things right in this small corner of Europe, but the energy sector is surely one to marvel at.

  • @lillymunster, that journal is archived with PubMed www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov[Title%20Abbreviation] but then so are some homeopathy journals, lol!. Amazing to hear, as you note, that the same journal publishes all his work, surprise surprise! Sounds like the in-house journal of last resort for anti-nuke authors that Dose Response is to pro-nukes authors.
    by Ian 12/19/2011 11:23:58 PM

  • @lillymunster, it's also despicable how they're selling the paper with the most alarming title possible and the study isn't available right during the period that media would be going to press with their press release, so everyone is running blind and screaming out loud, the opposite of the scientific process! Dubious informational ethics, unless they've got something really solid, but I can already see the truck-wide holes in it.
    by Ian 12/19/2011 11:28:17 PM

  • And look at this from the press release (bold added): "Based on our continuing research, the actual death count here may be as high as 18,000, with influenza and pneumonia, which were up five-fold in the period in question as a cause of death." I've spent a good part of the last year tracking down radiation-health research and I'd be willing to bet there's no good evidence beyond what I've seen to assume cases of the flu are caused radiation, and I've never seen anything correlating the two. In theory, sure maybe, but in data, I think they're just ready to attribute anything to any increment of radiation and then plaster terrifying headlines all over and the pro-nukers will have a field day tearing them to rightful shreds.
    by Ian 12/19/2011 11:35:36 PM

  • @Peter, right, since epidemiological studies only show correlation, they're only reliable with the largest data-sets possible. Which makes the incredibly narrow pre-Fuku control reference of just 3.5 months scandalous on its face. Most data trend up and down over short intervals, so to infer cause from correlation over such a small range is laughable on it face. Maybe I'll be eating crow tomorrow after I read the study, but it's their own press release that bases their claim on a comparison to just 3.5 months pre-Fukushima.
