  • the nuclear power plant accident in Fukushima, Japan, the world is now faced with a serious decision. Can we live with the fear of a similar accident occurring yet again? On January 14-15 2012, the Global Conference for a Nuclear Power Free World will be held in Yokohama, Japan. Participants from Japan and all over the world will gather to consider the issues surrounding nuclear power and discuss steps that can be taken towards a nuclear power free world. Come and be a part of this conference.

  • Fukushima Disaster: What was the key factor which brought about the Nuclear Power Plant Disaster? ("Questioning the nature of FUKUSHIMA" English version) (2 / 5 pages)

The situation worsened due to slow decision making on the management side.

    Q. On March 12, a little after 7:00 pm, workers started to pour seawater onto the core. This means that it took them even after the situation had become out of control it still took them an additional 20 hours to decide what to do . What could have possibly taken them so long to deliberate on the situation?

Why did this 100% predictable accident happen in the first place?

    Q. Was the Fukuchiyama Line accident caused by a mistake made on the technology management side?
    Prof. Yamaguchi:
The accident was reported as a derailment from initially having been going too fast. However, if the accident had really been due to derailment, the damaged train coaches would have fallen down inside of the arc of the railroad track. Since they all of the train cars fell outside of the curve, this implies that they instead actually first fell over due to the centrifugal force. Although it is hard to really account for all of the reasons derailment occurs; Turnovers, on the other hand, are relatively easier to predict and prepare countermeasures against. translate.googleusercontent.com

  • Fukushima Disaster: What was the key factor which brought about the Nuclear Power Plant Disaster? ("Questioning the nature of FUKUSHIMA" English version) (4 / 5 pages) ...I felt shocked to find out that TEPCO had decided to be so sneaky as to intentionally release ambiguous information. At that time, I really felt a strong sense of urgency, as though it were my mission, in needing to find out the facts and get them to the public as best I could.

The Day when the Fukushima will Rise again

    Q. Why do you think TEPCO would choose to pursue such a strategy?
    Prof. Yamaguchi:
It would have to have something to do with TEPCO wanting to protect the nuclear reactors and / or related administration of nuclear policy after the accident occurred. However, if evidence proving that the cause of the accident was ultimately made by errors on the technology management side were to surface, then the President and other executives would end up getting prosecuted for criminal offenses. The Nuclear Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters together with the proclamation of the nuclear contingency at 16:36 on March 11 that the PM Mr. Kan (at the time) , should assume responsibility for the mistakes. There have been similar cases where the executive managers of the associated company (in this case TEPCO) would have been held responsible as well on grounds of criminal offense. translate.googleusercontent.com

  • Wow! Interesting breakthrough on fuku rice!

High radiation doses in rice produced here are not necessarily linked to soil radiation levels, and could be linked to a lack of potassium and insufficient cultivation of rice paddies, a joint governmental survey has revealed. mdn.mainichi.jp

  • @lillymunster Yes, I read that article also. They must have filed the walkie-talkies in the recycle file. Next we will hear, the cell towers were destroyed by the tsunami, so its not our fault! Lets blame the lack of communication at a highly dangerous nuclear plant on the cell phone companies bad design on their cell towers. ...and on and on...

  • @MaryW What is commonly used instead of walkie talkies are a more sophisticated form of walkie talkie that works off wireless signal in a warehouse, large building, plant etc. They allow better communication as you can dial who you need to converse with and also usually have some sort of broadcast mode so you can call everyone with a message. These don't need typical cell towers like you need for your cell phone. Just like a walkie talkie these units need to be recharged periodically. With no power they could not charge batteries on anything. More spare batteries and a solar charger with a small battery bank would be enough to solve this.

I find this and the rice stories interesting because both are such simple solutions to major problems.

  • Experts Decry Initial Response to the Nuclear Incident in Fukushima
The problems at the nuclear plant after the incident were related to the failure to take preventive measures for the unexpected, said the document of the panel, led by Yotaro Hatamura, emeritus professor at the University of Tokyo.

According to experts, the operators of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) dealt with the situation in the wrong way in several reactors that collapsed and fused their cores.

Interim Report out today, December 26 --Shizuko Kakinuma, a researcher at Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences who sits on an independent committee investigating the Fukushima Daiichi accident. "With a Japanese diet, that's unlikely," she said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. One or two meals wouldn't have much effect.
...said Ms. Kakinuma, as IT IS POSSIBLE TO LOWER the amount of radioactive CESIUM IN CONTAMINATED ANIMALS TO SAFE LEVELS.
www.foxnews.com -- "The levels found in the beef, though, would become a HEALTH CONCERN ONLY IF A PERSON ATE LARGE QUANTITIES EVERY DAY FOR A YEAR, said Shizuko Kakinuma, a researcher at Japan's National Institute of Radiological Sciences who sits on an independent committee investigating the Fukushima Daiichi accident.
