  • @lillymunster Ok read the article. Maybe the author, Jeff Richardson, needs a phone call. If you decide to call, ask him if he was 'on the 5th floor' or 'in the basement' when communications were going on?

  • @lillymunster If you didn't catch my drift, I quoted from this article. Panel: Wide Communication Gaps Hampered Response In Fukushima. Dec 27.2011. The task force was established at the crisis management center IN TH BASEMENT of the Prime Minister's Official Residence soon after...
But Kan's group... gathered ON THE FIFTH FLOOR to discuss how to respond to the accident as well as deciding on the evacuation zones. ...There was no legal basis for the formation of Kan's group...communications between the fifth floor and the basement were insufficient," the interim report said. webcache.googleusercontent.com

  • @lillymunster No, lillymunster, the Prime Minister was in the basement. Kan on the 5th floor. Nuclear fission was outside. :)

  • The recommendations are to make an EMERGENCY PLAN:

    1. Store food, water and medicine.

    2. Having a knife, duct tape, a battery radio and a few changes of clothing and bedsheets.

    3. Keep cleaning supplies along with personal documents such as driver's license and birth certificate (which can certify the identity).

    4. Having basic first aid items useful for a hurricane or pandemic.

All advice is worthwhile, but Khan admitted to the CDC's blog : "If a zombie bites you'll become one of them."

  • Biological Hazard in MultiCountries on Thursday, 13 October, 2011 at 04:59 (04:59 AM) UTC

Updated: Wednesday, 28 December, 2011 at 03:58 UTC
    Description
Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska's Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals' fur coats. Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor. "We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseased animals captured near St. Lawrence Island with a request to examine the material for radioactivity," said John Kelley, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. "There is concern expressed by some members of the local communities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushima nuclear reactor's damage," he said. The results of the tests would not be available for "several weeks," Kelley said. Water tests have not picked up any evidence of elevated radiation in U.S. Pacific waters since the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which caused multiple fuel meltdowns at the Fukushima plant and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate the surrounding area. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have been seeking the cause of the diseased seals for weeks, but have so far found no answers. hisz.rsoe.hu

  • Cesium-137 deposition and contamination of Japanese soils due to the Fukushima nuclear accident. There are many important agricultural regions in Japan. In Japan, the limit for the sum of 134Cs and 137Cs concentrations (as total cesium) in soil is 5,000 Bq kg-1 under the Food Sanitation Law (24). Considering that about half (2,500 Bq kg-1) of the total radioactive cesium deposition is due to 137Cs, the east Fukushima prefecture exceeded this limit and some neighboring prefectures such as Miyagi, Tochigi, and Ibaraki are partially close to the limit under our upper bound estimate (Movie S4) and, therefore, local-scale exceedance is likely given the strong spatial variability of 137Cs deposition. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov

  • @lillymunster Re: The new German house: Not very impressive. In Portugal you can install a home solar panel system from EDP that produces between 33,638 kWy and 37,843 kWy. That's twice as much power as that new German system produces.

  • the panels are on the roof and the southeast wall. these panels are partly (old) solar thermal panels, the others are photovoltaic panels. the photovoltaic panels have a lower energy output, but they produce electric energy, while the solarthermal panels only heat water. i think this may be what pedro refers to.
    by Edano 12/28/2011 1:10:00 PM

  • @Edano that would explain some of the output disparity.

  • @Edano The panels EDP is using in their systems are state-of-the-art latest generation photovoltaic panels so, maybe that allied to more sunlight throughout the year makes the difference. On the other hand, houses in Portugal will consume more energy because the equipment usually used is class B or C. Of course if one allies class A++ (more expensive) appliances with the photovoltaic systems one might produce a lot more power than consumed. I've met a few people here who sell electric energy to the grid but the investment can be quite big. Class A++ appliances are still very expensive around here (the most power efficient are actually produced in Germany or elsewhere (PRC for example) but of German design so I guess they will be a lot cheaper in Germany than around here.
by Pedro Jesus 12/28/2011 1:20:27 PM

  • yesterday i read an article about the difference of the panel types, but i don't find it anymore. the current research goes to intelligent grids where you produce electric energy and store it e.g. in car batteries. they do not use the solarthermal panels so much, though they have a higher output (in kw). this is criticized by environmentalists, they don't like the "electricity centered" power generation.

  • it is a question of the overall philosophy.
    by Edano 12/28/2011 1:22:19 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus we nearly exclusively have AAA equipment here. that is really interesting. you hardly find refrigerators or washing mashines below AAA efficiency. i thought this would be the same in other countries.
    by Edano 12/28/2011 1:25:51 PM

  • i just bought a mini dish washer because i needed a cheap and small one without caring for the efficency, and i was really surprised when i found it to be "double" AAA. i just paid 120 euros for it.
    by Edano 12/28/2011 1:30:31 PM

  • @Edano Not so, we still get a lot of class B and C appliances around here. German technology is the most advanced for home appliances so it is only natural that the best equipment is made available in the German market before any other. To give an example of how bad that particular situation is in Portugal, my Singer washing machine that was bought new about 5 years ago is class G... I'm planning on buying maybe a Bosch class A++ next year. They cost around 400-500€.
by Pedro Jesus 12/28/2011 1:37:18 PM

  • hmmm i thought we had a common market...really strange.
    by Edano 12/28/2011 1:39:22 PM

  • @Edano We do in theory but in practice it doesn't work that well... if you compare the auto market, the differences are even more extreme. Some German cars cost almost twice as much here than in Germany. We have a common market but the taxes are very different. Our VAT, for example, is at 23% at the moment.
