    Description
The reactor at the River Bend nuclear plant in Louisiana shut down automatically after an issue in the turbine caused safety systems to trip. River Bend nuclear plant. Source: NRCAccording to an event notification report filed with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the shutdown caused the reactor protection system to activate, and the reactor's water level briefly dropped. Per the system's design, containment isolation valves in the boiling water reactor's suppression pool cooling system closed. Reactor core isolation cooling operated manually for about 1 minute. The shutdown from 100 percent power was uncomplicated, according to the NRC. Plant operators are conducting an investigation into the reactor trip, which the report indicated was caused by a loss speed sensor in the turbine. Entergy operates River Bend, near Baton Rouge, La. The plant uses a single General Electric boiling water reactor with Mark III containment at the plant generating 989 megawatts, according to the NRC. hisz.rsoe.hu

The Pilgrim nuclear power plant in Plymouth has been shut down after what officials said was a small leak of radioactive steam. The owner of the power plant says the leak was never a threat to workers or the public. Entergy Corporation says the leak in a safety relief valve was contained within the plant's piping. This is the second controlled shutdown at the plant in the past two months. hisz.rsoe.hu

    Description
Scientists in Alaska are investigating whether local seals are being sickened by radiation from Japan's crippled Fukushima nuclear plant. Scores of ring seals have washed up on Alaska's Arctic coastline since July, suffering or killed by a mysterious disease marked by bleeding lesions on the hind flippers, irritated skin around the nose and eyes and patchy hair loss on the animals' fur coats. Biologists at first thought the seals were suffering from a virus, but they have so far been unable to identify one, and tests are now underway to find out if radiation is a factor. "We recently received samples of seal tissue from diseased animals captured near St. Lawrence Island with a request to examine the material for radioactivity," said John Kelley, Professor Emeritus at the Institute of Marine Science at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. "There is concern expressed by some members of the local communities that there may be some relationship to the Fukushima nuclear reactor's damage," he said. The results of the tests would not be available for "several weeks," Kelley said. Water tests have not picked up any evidence of elevated radiation in U.S. Pacific waters since the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan, which caused multiple fuel meltdowns at the Fukushima plant and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate the surrounding area. Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have been seeking the cause of the diseased seals for weeks, but have so far found no answers.

It’s the first thing you notice. Electric orange, ripe and luscious hoshigaki hang from every bough. As we drive through the country and over the glittering, snow-specked mountain range from Fukushima city to Soma on the northeast coast of Japan, we pass many persimmon trees dotting the landscape, all laden with fruit, ready for harvesting. But this year, the persimmons of Fukushima prefecture will remain untouched. Bounty only for microbial decomposers, they are a silent reminder of the slow-burning, far-reaching menace of a nuclear accident.

  • From the non-concurrence:

    2. As described in Section B of this Non-concurrence Process Form, certain sections of the SER will be revised to clarify the
bases for the staffs determination that there is reasonable assurance that the shield building meets relevant requirements. As
these changes to the SER do not affect the design or analyses submitted by the applicant, nor address the issues raised in the
non-concurrence, there is no need to seek re-concurrence by the non-concurring individual in the revised SER as his concerns
    remain unresolved.
Final status of the non-concurrence: The non-concurrence remains in place

It sounds like the NRC did nothing to make the design be changed so it may have been approved with these flaws still in place!
    by lillymunster 12/29/2011 3:50:16 PM

  • A couple of issues I remember from past discussion of the AP 1000: The water tank at the top of the reactor building makes it top heavy and you have water sloshing during a quake at the top of the building. Parts of the reactor building are cast concrete that are brought to the site and assembled in a modular fashion. This means there are connection and seams in the concrete protection structures that could be weak points in an accident.

    by lillymunster 12/29/2011 3:58:31 PM

  • I am reading through the NRC version released. What seems to be the big issue is the upper portion of the outer containment building. It failed on their concrete tests and computer modeling they tried to do to justify its safety were flawed and didn't pass concrete testing standards for computer modeling.
