Going back through overnight tweets on the PBS Frontline twitter feed. Surprised how many random people tweeted that it was blatant nuclear propaganda
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 1:05:05 PM

Sounds like there may be another "discussion" with the moderator of Frontline on nuclear power on twitter at 1pm ET today on #Frontline. According to NEI this morning.
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 1:07:39 PM

It is- on this page via Coveritlive How much you want to guess this will be a "moderated" discussion to try to undo what happened last night.

by dean 1/18/2012 1:22:05 PM

@dean hi there. @lilly do you mean people saying that the special was propaganda for the nuclear industry?
by bo 1/18/2012 1:26:17 PM

Hi Dean!
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 1:27:12 PM

@bo yes. Random people that I don't recognize from twitter were complaining the Frontline piece was nuke industry propaganda
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 1:27:41 PM

@lilly I think that people are so jaded right now that anything that comes through mainstream channels is assumed to be manipulation
by bo 1/18/2012 1:29:03 PM

Tatami time for this weary soul. See you all tomorrow.
by bo 1/18/2012 2:04:21 PM

be safe bo.. very good seeing you
by dean 1/18/2012 2:14:51 PM

@dean they put the camera in 2 tomorrow
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 2:22:19 PM

@lilly, following the decline of nuclear power and the abrupt halt of construction on plants who were in the process of being built, the nuclear industry who fabricated parts meeting nuclear grade requirements also let their certifications lapse. The demise of nuclear power in this country, in my opinion, wasn't based on the risks of nuclear power but was directly determined by the exorbitant escalation in costs to build the facilities. Since then the industry has limped along with NRC relaxing stringent requirements and bending to profitability driven decisions to keep the plants working
by dean 1/18/2012 2:22:28 PM

@lilly.. excellent I hope they release some of the videos or photos
by dean 1/18/2012 2:22:44 PM

In the interim we have failed to show that the government, who promised storage for nuclear waste, has failed to engineer the most important part of nuclear energy.. how to deal with the waste. This is one critical area needed and the primary area where we've fallen on our own sword.
by dean 1/18/2012 2:24:43 PM

Profits drive the industry today, and the utility companies insist that it's the need for electrical power. This very reason for profits has forced the industry and NRC to allow utility companies to expand storage of expended fuel in the spent fuel pools and as the pools became full, store fuel in containers which have been expeditiously designed and manufactured.

NEI was all over the Frontline premiere, they even issued a news piece announciing it.

Does anyone know how many minor accidents and incidents US nuclear power plants have in an average year?
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 2:35:52 PM

@Ian I have not watched it yet. Going to today while I get some work done. It is available online at

One last thing, the clusterfu#k at Hanford, where I am headed next month:
www.usatoday.comby bo 1/18/2012 3:00:31 PM

@bo interesting. So many people don't know Hanford even exists. I didn't before Fukushima. :-) Are you working on downwinder stuff?
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 3:04:44 PM

by bo 1/18/2012 3:06:10 PM

@lilly yes. Going there to work on downwinder issues. Meeting with folks in Seattle, and if the pass is clear, on to Hanford. Otherwise I'll head to the site when the weather is better in the summer. Many of the Hanford groups, like Harnford Challenge maintain offices in Seattle. Then on for a tour of the former Nevada Test Site and some work in St. George, Utah with the downwinder community there.
by bo 1/18/2012 3:07:43 PM

By the way, I am scheduled to meet with a reporter and producer from NPR while in Nevada. They are going to interview me about Fukushima for an hour long show that will air on 3/11, the first part of a five hour series (one a month) on energy. The NPR folks are also coming along with us to the test site, mostly out of curiosity.
by bo 1/18/2012 3:09:04 PM

Another side note. I used to work as the fruit buyer for the second biggest organic produce wholesaler in the US (bay area of course). I had a map of Washington on the wall of my office, and I put pins in to mark where all of the apple and pear orchards, and potato farms were located. I made almost all of my buying decisions based on how far from Hanford these farms were.
by bo 1/18/2012 3:12:46 PM

Cool on the NPR thing. Make sure to let us know what the show name is when it is ready so we can pick up the info on it.
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 3:16:22 PM

@eyes is there a place to comment? I hadn't seen one, what page?
by lillymunster 1/18/2012 3:17:01 PM

@eyes I sure will. Copied your question and will ask the folks at Hanford Challenge. I'll be there in early Feb so will reply at that time.
by bo 1/18/2012 3:18:34 PM

Tatami time, this time for real! Good night all, keep up the great work.
