  • Most of the chat seems to be Miles Obrien whining about being fired from CNN and how great their jobs are.
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 6:32:05 PM

  • @lillymunster if you went under name 'Nancy', it was picked up. At least one question.
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 6:32:12 PM

  • @lilly.. I"m in there now posting some questions
    by dean 1/18/2012 6:41:49 PM

  • @MaryW that isnt me
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 6:44:47 PM

  • I sent them a post, if they have 200 views, where are their posts?
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 6:46:00 PM

  • Miles Obrien pulls a nuke PR:
" it probably has been overdone and the level at which a evacuation is triggered in Japan-20 Millisieverts of exposure per year is extremely low. I am certain the government of Japan would like to walk that one back. But it's impossible to do that. The truth is the stress and anxiety of dislocating 180,000 people will pack a much greater health risk over the long term than if they stayed in an area that was contaminated at those levels."
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 6:47:59 PM

  • @MaryW very few questions are getting through at all and I tried to make rather soft - ball questions
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 6:48:23 PM

  • Now the question on chat is, was Fukushima over blown?
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 6:48:40 PM

  • good thought @ Mary, I haven't seen any of mine yet either
    by dean 1/18/2012 6:49:09 PM

  • that is just insane
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 6:49:20 PM

  • I felt like telling him 'no' if you are happy with breathing and eating radiation in your home town USA
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 6:49:40 PM

  • I just told them this chat was boring. With 200 views why all the quiet time :)
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 6:55:27 PM

  • "stay away from the cheeseburgers and french fries! They are a much bigger risk to our health than cesium." comment by Miles
    by MaryW 1/18/2012 7:02:46 PM

  • A lot of people can not watch now, due to the time zone they are in. We should have posted the chat conversation here.

    by eyes 1/18/2012 7:21:38 PM

  • @eyes kinda sad. I probably posted 5 questions over the time frame
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 7:24:25 PM

  • And this was the proclaimed result of their "studying" the event for the last 9 months...
    by eyes 1/18/2012 7:29:05 PM

  • I finally was able to watch the show this morning. Has anyone else had a chance to watch it? What did you think?
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 7:30:55 PM

  • METI now says all building materials left out side may be contaminated ex-skf.blogspot.com
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 7:56:22 PM

  • @lillymunster , I am watching the show piecemeal, finding inaccuracies. First some of the generator trucks made it to the plant Friday night and compressed air was restored at least at Unit 1 in the early morning hours Saturday. So a total blackout did not persist into Saturday.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 8:24:55 PM

  • The other issue is, they make it sound like people were evacuated only beginning Mar 15. The people living nearest the plant were evacuated already Saturday Mar 12 in the morning before hardened venting commenced.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 8:27:05 PM

  • @Peter thanks, I didn't catch those
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 8:32:59 PM

  • I took issue with their claim that the tsunamis did all the damage. We know that is not the case or is still under contention at best.
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 8:34:09 PM

  • @lillymunster, the Italian fellow from MIT just said as much "if the diesel generators and the batteries had been located higher, a lot of things would probably not have happened." How does he know what would have or would not have happened?
    by Peter 1/18/2012 8:37:53 PM

  • There is no word about the IC being switched off in Unit 1 or turbine-driven pump failure.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 8:39:54 PM

  • @Peter considering we now know there was containment damage at Daini, it is really hard to say the tsunami was the core cause. We don't know enough yet and what we do know is enough to question that idea of the tsunami doing it. Reports of cooling pipe damage at 1, the IC issues etc.
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 8:40:58 PM

  • @you I questioned this and got told I was ignorant by some nuke industry PR guy
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 8:41:58 PM

  • ...no word about the hardened venting releasing hydrogen into the building at Unit 1. Ask him next time, why the HPCI of Unit 1 never came online, why the RCIC and the HPCI failed a couple of days later at the other units.

  • Angry, activist, anti-nuclear jellyfish have UK regulators in a worry www.deadlinenews.co.uk
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 9:11:57 PM

  • ...now to the doses, they make it sound like people are unduly concerned and pick the low dose 20 milliSv/y that GoJ set for evacuation. GoJ is scolded for setting the limited on the conservative side. The point here is that the dose rates are much greater than that near the plant and can be much greater than that near hotspots. New hotspots may develop, depending on the weather. This uncertainty deters people, not unduly. In addition, dose is compared only to external radiation.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 9:20:27 PM

  • ..also no mention that children and people with health issues may be more sensitive to radiation than others.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 9:21:38 PM

  • ...how about pregnant women? I dislike statistics that treat everybody alike.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 9:24:07 PM

  • good points - grabbed them all
    by lillymunster 1/18/2012 9:30:30 PM

  • @lillymunster lol re jellyfish!
    by UKVal 1/18/2012 9:33:45 PM

  • In the segment addressing alternatives, they never mention the problem of nuclear waste treatment and storage (think Hanford!).
As a minor jab, no wonder that the Italian fellow works at MIT. There would be no job for him in Italy! Also note that all countries lumped with the US as pursuing nuclear power in this report are developing nations. The nation with most developed nuclear power, France, is not even mentioned.
    by Peter 1/18/2012 9:41:36 PM

  • As to North Anna, note that the seismic annunicators in the control room failed because of a power outage. The reactors were tripped by the power perturbation. Though better prepared according to Mr. Lochsbaum, there was room for improvement. read more here: brainmindinstrev.blogspot.com
    by Peter 1/18/2012 9:51:35 PM

  • A couple of things I noticed in the show:
They said that the generators were on the sea shore. I don't know if it was a wording flub or if they were trying to actually claim that.
claim that contaminated zones are 'relatively low'
claim that risk of cancer is "very very small"
Both of these are gross generalizations that don't reflect the entire situation or the entire body of evidence very well.
claim that the only "bridge" is coal

BTW, I am seeing Germany suddenly get picked on by some of the nuclear PR twitter accounts. That it is going to cost some insane dollar amount to move away from nuclear and that they are making all of it up with coal.
