  • @eyes and bo, indeed we are all downwind from some hazardous industry and as we see from fuku and other tests it's a global issue. @bo, I know Mike Crapo quite well and he other representatives from Idaho and send them emails on various issues. He has worked hard for this along with the others involved.
    by dean 1/25/2012 12:45:21 PM

  • I believe one of the industries that also needs to be under the microscope are the plants what make various chemicals, like DOW. Remember back when the show on Erin Brokovich was made? I think that same company was right back at it on disposal of hazardous material.
    by dean 1/25/2012 12:48:05 PM

  • @dean agreed. The cavalier toxification of the planet for profit is madness. Short term thinking brought on a global scale.

Still, what a name to succeed with in politics!
    by bo 1/25/2012 12:50:55 PM

  • @bo, it's unfortunate that industry is in the state it is just in USA and we have the EPA and other regulatory agencies. I wonder if there are comparable regulatory agencies in India, China and other countries who are charging on with industrial revolution. I've heard that China is the single biggest polluter of the atmosphere in the world ie:, probably relaxed requirements on So2 EMISSIONS and soon to be nuclear emissions
    by dean 1/25/2012 12:56:03 PM

  • @dean, I've only been to the airport in China, but living in Japan, a lot of people here have cause to spend a lot of time in China, and almost every one of them has said that the level of pollution there shocks and terrifies them. I believe it is similar in India. And if the Bhopal case is any indication, there are no legal protections for the wellbeing of people or communities.
    by bo 1/25/2012 12:58:08 PM

  • I believe that Canada is successful in having industry sign up for incentives to keep the emissions under control. I saw a special one time in USA about incentives and as it turned out, about the only person who called in to sign up was a smart home owner who saw how he could get money from the government to make im
    provements at his own home
    by dean 1/25/2012 12:58:48 PM

  • @bo, my point exactly, the unfortunate people in those countries are much more expendable than other countries. In my opinion we have a serious overlapping problem in the world today, "no" global capability to set standards, impose fines etc. to stop the increase of impacts of industrial environmental impact.
    by dean 1/25/2012 1:01:39 PM

  • India and China both have really lax regulation. This is why so many polluting companies in the west have moved operations to those countries. I remember late in the summer a reactor in China that is in the middle of a dense population area with apt buildings and factories all around it, had an issue. We never found out what the problem exactly was. It was either an experimental FBR or an experimental version of an AP 1000 at an institute.

  • The number of EPA superfund sites in this country is beyond alarming. The casual gutting of the Clean air/water provisions by Cheney to quickly facilitate extraction of natural gas is just the tip of the regulatory problem. The EPA needs teeth. The planet cannot support another 100 years of this "Industrial Revolution"
    by eyes 1/25/2012 1:08:07 PM

  • @dean China is now the biggest polluter (only slightly over USA) because their industry is also the biggest in the world. USA occupied that top position until a few months ago. There have been combining efforts to reduce overall emissions, such as more strict policies and strong investment in the renewable energy area. They are, as of 2012, the biggest wind power energy producers in the world. China's wind power plants that went on-line in 2011 amount to half of the increase in the world's wind power production, which has increase 2,000 fold in only one year. It's an ongoing revolution but not a lot of people are aware of it.

    by bo 1/25/2012 1:12:31 PM

  • I surprises me that environmental regulation and safer energy sources is still so contentious here in the US. So many people have been convinced both are horrible ideas.
    by lillymunster 1/25/2012 1:13:28 PM

  • @lilly our governing class has disconnected from the populace. I'm sure all of the gutting is not supported by the public, but just like increasing the tax rates on the rich, what the public think and feel is no longer a factor in legislation.

    by bo 1/25/2012 1:18:26 PM

  • @bo I see it in online discussions and somewhat in face to face things. It isn't heavily skewed that way but there are some very vocal people who think gutting the EPA is a good idea and that renewables are a scam. It is very frustrating. I have been able to convince a few people otherwise on renewables but it takes lots of work to show them enough numbers for them to believe it or at least stop bleating about renewables not being for real.
    by lillymunster 1/25/2012 1:19:13 PM

  • @bo they have a coordinated marketing plan going on. But why. They do something every few weeks to keep this thing in the news.
    by lillymunster 1/25/2012 1:19:59 PM

  • I think part of the EPA hate is Ron Paul wanting to end it and GOP politics constantly hating on it on behalf of industry. It is a bit short sighted if anyone actually goes back to the 1970's and why the EPA was given the ability to do what it does. I think people have forgotten about things like Love Canal etc.
    by lillymunster 1/25/2012 1:21:49 PM

  • Unfortunate, expendable people can be found here as well. Look at the current battles going on in PA , pitting neighbors against each other, money talks and people listen. We are our own worst enemy. Look at the locations of the superfund sites and the history of how they became that way.
    by eyes 1/25/2012 1:24:01 PM

  • @lillymunster I think there are a lot of regulations that US inhabitants are not aware of, perhaps due to a poor PR effort from the Administration to convey their efforts. Other regulations are defied by the general public because they don't see it as beneficial but more of another level of Government intrusion in private life. I think it is a matter of education. It will take time. To give you an example, in Europe the plans to separate and recycle urban garbage (trash) took decades to implement. People have big inertia against change. It takes at least one generation to absorb new values and implement new habits. And nowadays, one generation can be as much as 3 decades.

  • Time for a bath here. Don't know if I've told you about Japanese baths. So good. You set a control panel for what temp you want, and how deep you want the water, and then you press a button and walk away. When the bath is full the control panel plays a little song so you know. And...it keeps the water at the temp you set, and level you set, for as long as you stay in it. It never gets cold. And the whole room around it is water proof so you can just sink down and let the water spill over the sides. So nice. Time to climb in, they're playing my song.

  • @bo I want one of those...
    by lillymunster 1/25/2012 1:35:13 PM

  • @lilly when they were installing a new control box a few years ago, I was telling the plumbers that in America we just have handles and that the water gets cold after a while, they looked at me like I was crazy. In America? They can't still have those primitive things. I didn't tell them about the non-heated toilet seats in America.

  • @bo I'm definitely getting one of those when I buy my dream house some day.
by Pedro Jesus 1/25/2012 1:39:10 PM

  • Since he was mentioned, let me clarify that Ron Paul wants to do away with federal control of local issues. He believes that states should be 'laboratories of democracy' where the people most affected rule. Under his philosophy, the fed could never have rammed Vermont Yankee through. Just sayin'
