  • @MaryW what? How can you say it is a safe level but you don't know how much is being leaked???? ::headdesk::

  • @elainekirk It depends on where the leaks are. There are still lots of storm drainage running to the sea around the plant on top of the systems that purposely run to the sea. There are some that don't purposely connect out to see but who knows with so much broken or leaking out cable pass through etc.

  • I was sent some handouts for the meeting today so I added those and other related documents on the US spent fuel meeting here: www.simplyinfo.org

  • Live bloging on the NRC meeting starts in 1 hour. Will check in when I have things ready to go. There may be an opportunity to ask questions to the NRC. Once I find out if there is a way for me to submit them I can let people know and I can try to pass them on from here.

  • UK: Nuclear power lobbying distorts reports to fit their agenda.

"Ministers 'misled MPs over need for nuclear power stations'"
"Cross-party report says government misrepresented findings on future electricity demand, and ignored case against nuclear" (Fiona Harvey) www.guardian.co.uk

  • perfect timing just got back. Meeting now starting
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 6:58:22 PM

  • I have a way to ask questions via text. I don't know if they will be answered or not but I can ask questions if people have one. Start the post with "QUESTION" if you want me to forward a question about something in the meeting
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 6:59:36 PM

  • Presentation then time for questions.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:00:46 PM

  • Presentation and transcript from this meeting will be available next month (after the public comment period is over)
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:01:12 PM

  • They want questions "of a clarifying nature" only.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:01:34 PM

  • Jim Rubenstone introducing. Presenter Christian Pineda.
Main purpose to walk through the report from last year and dicuss assumptions, background and answer questions
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:03:54 PM

  • Much is on developing an environmental impact statement about spent fuel long term storage.

BTW, if you have news to post or other conversations please continue to post. I don't think this will have a considerable amount of posts for this meeting.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:06:09 PM

  • 2. findings needed, Offsite solution for storage before reactors start ending their lifespan or assurances that fuel can be stored safely on site. These were federal mandates on the NRC to do.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:10:46 PM

  • Impact analysis is for 200 years storage for their methodology. Coming up with "composite generic sites" after looking at existing sites to identify patterns and groupings that make "representative sites" based on characteristics.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:17:20 PM

  • They won't speculate on transportation or other conditions 200 years from now in their report. Options: Continued storage onsite for 200 years. Regional facilities storage. Combination of previous plus reprocessing then store waste at the reprocessing facility.
    2016 possible decision.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:25:35 PM

  • Reprocessing could include glassification of fuel, not specifically making MOX fuel. A commentor said reprocessing complicates the process and should be left out of planning right now.
Question will all spent fuel pools be put back down to original storage capacity.? Report will reflect what the capacity is NOW not original capacity. IE for the report will consider them still overloaded and ok. NRC may change rules on this though.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:30:58 PM

  • NRC will decide what "safe storage is" the report won't decide this. Question will we have a storage solution before 2019. This report will only talk about properties suitable in a storage site. The actual how it plays out is up to Congress etc.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:34:33 PM

  • The people running this meeting seem to be totally unequipped for answering real questions from the public. The people here are only involved in the research into environmental properties for a future site and their research paper EIS. Nobody at this meeting is from the core of the NRC and able to answer deeper questions about the spent fuel issue.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:37:57 PM

  • Some guy asking about "private storage" hinting that the private company that wants to store fuel should be part of the process?
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:41:38 PM

  • People are asking about terrorism, homeland insecurity, IAEA etc in the EIS report. May create new but will use existing reports and understanding mostly.

They keep backpeddling on conclusions they stated previously saying they are not conclusions yet and will be figured out as they go. They don't know what happens when you extend storage of waste past 100 years or the ability to make those projections.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:53:36 PM

  • comment that all dry storage has to be actively managed.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:54:32 PM

  • @lillymunster good grief the thought of more private companies involved............................
    by elainekirk 1/31/2012 7:55:30 PM

  • Blue ribbon commission did not suggest reprocessing and did say public involvement should happen. People near savannah river don't like the idea of this group including reprocessing in the research. The group is saying they are not trying to go contrary to the Blue Ribbon group.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:56:33 PM

  • @elainekirk that has been getting a "hell no" from pretty much anyone except a handfull of people with financial interests in it. It is the worlds stupidest idea IMHO
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 7:57:04 PM

  • now taking questions exclusively
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:00:04 PM

  • People are asking about the worker and environment exposures of transferring all this fuel out of pools, to casks and storage.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:04:43 PM

  • @lillymunster savvy people
    by elainekirk 1/31/2012 8:06:31 PM

  • Asking about the US who will take over when a plant owner can't meet the obligation. got a non answer. Now asking about dealing with native american tribes in the process. Since there isn't a specific site right now not sure what this has to do with it?
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:08:17 PM

  • All of this is dependent on ongoing maintenance and staffing of storage by the owner of the fuel or other entitiy.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:21:13 PM

  • At reactor storage, some reactors don't have enough room to store all that fuel for hundreds of years.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:23:43 PM

  • Someone asked if there will be baseline health studies about these nuclear dumps or property value issues. The EIS will consider this in impacts.
Comment says that this report seems to hint that we won't have a permanent facility solution for up to 200 years? Response they just want to know what the impact would be if stored on site, regional for 200 years.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:28:47 PM

  • Someone asked how long dry casks are rated for. Answer - 20 years. Revised for 40 year certification. Dry storage facilities approved for 20 - updated to 40.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:30:19 PM

  • how does NRC justify continuing to produce this waste with no storage solutions? Answer - lots of stammering, mentions licensing of 40 years and confidence nrc has and more non answer
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:34:51 PM

  • someone suggests making only 50 year increments of planning. A public participant, not an NRC staff member
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:35:55 PM

  • Suggestion they shorten the schedule rather than 2019 for a final decision.
    by lillymunster 1/31/2012 8:40:25 PM

  • they are wrapping up

  • @lilly, do all 3, just don't breath deeply in the vicinity of the "whooshing steam" in Illinois. If you are interested in what the tribal issue is, a careful reading of the Blue Ribbon doc should clear it right up for you. You can get the PDF here www.nucleartownhall.com
