evergreennuclear.blogspot.comWhen specialists do a Seismic PRA what is typically found to be the dominant source of risk is a combination of the following:
An earthquake damages incoming power lines by failing the ceramic insulators associated with high voltage power lines.
Onsite emergency diesels fail due to provide power (typical causes include anchorage of diesel engine coolers, disruption of fuel oil supplies, etc)
Inability to restore power from downed transmission lines or bring in a large portable generator eventually results in loss of battery power, instrumentation, and the ability to cool the reactor.
by dean 2/1/2012 12:04:32 AM

I wonder if they inspected the ceramic insulators at those plants where EQ's occured recently ..

interesting @elaine.. doing calorimetrics must be done to bring the plants in synch,,, bryon runing higher that it could be is not good...

not sure what to make of this doc about chemical testing re byron
docs.google.comby elainekirk 2/1/2012 1:28:09 AM

@elainekirk I think it is testing particulate vs. a filtration system but not sure why the details on chemical whatnot.
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 1:32:30 AM

ooo seismic data !!!!!!! search byron there are a few covered
pbadupws.nrc.govomg they even show all reactor wall damage f'in ell am I imagining it??
look at drawing 6-10
by elainekirk 2/1/2012 1:37:27 AM

@elainekirk at least Byron doesn't have a fault line running directly under it. That seems to have been typical in the 1970's
The issues listed on North Anna in that are um. eep.
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 1:46:44 AM

@lillymunster exactly so eeepish

pbadupws.nrc.govby elainekirk 2/1/2012 1:51:50 AM

Byron not being on a fault line has a laundry list of seismic concerns listed. There must be soil issues.
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 1:52:08 AM

yeah and why hasnt power been restored rather long delay with no 'we expect' announcements
by elainekirk 2/1/2012 1:57:23 AM

@elainekirk i found that odd also. Remember N. Anna the operator and NRC were quicker to give an assessment and time to recover at least power.
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 2:11:05 AM

@lillymunster really odd

French Report Faults Indecision on Nuclear Industry
www.nytimes.comThe court, an independent agency perhaps analogous to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office, noted that in a practical sense the kind of build-up in new generating capacity necessary to replace the aging reactor fleet was essentially “impossible.”
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 2:34:19 AM

@Lurking some were supposedly "unknown" at the time of construction but found later as seismic science advances. Then there are many that were "unknown" until someone fessed up that yea, the execs knew the fault lines were there.
by lillymunster 2/1/2012 2:43:41 AM

@Lurking plants built in the 70's are now in the middle of suburbs, not in the middle of nowhere. The safety by distance has been voided.
