  • Byron went down at 10:18am on Monday - so about 23 minutes later. Is there something that could have been damaged that eventually went 23 minutes later like that insulator?
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:23:21 PM

  • earlier reports that ceramic insulators were of most concern on the transformers etc and electrical equipment when performing the PRA's.. probability risk assessments... they need to THERMAL image all the insulators and other electrical transmission devices to ensure none of the others are at a degraded but not failed state
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:25:43 PM

  • @dean could the quake have cracked the insulator or loosened it? They said it fell off
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:26:27 PM

  • @lilly.. I've use the thermal image gun which is similar to a device that you hold and then point the lazer dot at components to detect over heating
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:26:51 PM

  • @lilly. .it's possible that a quake could do that. The one reported seemed to be small and some 50 odd miles away but non the less, it could have had some impacts..
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:27:39 PM

  • Do these insulators show cracks or hot spots where the material is failing?
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:27:53 PM

  • The quake had a 5km depth so it was really shallow
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:28:15 PM

  • enenews.com now this is really insane..
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:29:53 PM

  • @lilly, the use of the thermal image gun will show flaws as it begins to heat up the devices....

NRC spokeswoman for emergency at Illinois nuke plant also works as belly dancer — “Absolutely there’s no threat to the public”
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:32:06 PM

  • What does that have to do with anything? :-) Ene must be hard up for news today :-)
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:32:20 PM

  • does the NRC spokeswoman mean there is no threat to the public from the belly dancing? or the reactor?

  • @Dean someone claimed that unit 4 at Fuku had fuel reloaded into the core before the quake hit. Ian was wondering if they would have put all new assemblies in or some used ones?

  • External Power Restored at Byron Nuclear Plant

From Rockford Register Star (1/31/2012 10:03PM):

BYRON — Operators at Byron Generating Station terminated the Unusual Event at 8 p.m. today, after the return of power to Unit 2.

“Our diesel generators performed as expected in providing continuous electricity to the unit during the Unusual Event. Plant teams will now focus on a safe and measured approach to returning Unit 2 to the electrical grid,” said Byron Station Site Vice President Tim Tulon.

Station personnel are in communication with local, state and federal officials, including the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the facility’s status.

The Unusual Event, which was declared Monday, is the lowest of the four emergency classifications as established by the NRC.

Byron’s Unit 1 continues to safely supply electricity to customers.

Exelon Nuclear officials say an equipment failure in a switchyard near the plant triggered the automatic shutdown of Unit 2.
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:41:29 PM

  • @dean do you have a link for the news story so I can add it to the Byron update?
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 3:42:23 PM

  • @lilly.. if they were refueling I'm quite certain it would have been a mixture.. confirmation needed on that..
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:42:26 PM

  • @dean the claim came from a dubious source but the schedule they were on matches up to be about to that point if they were on schedule.

  • oh,.. @lilly I had read somewhere .. where electrical utilities have been selling off their off site electrical distribution systems etc... worth researching... we would expect that if that is the case.. the new owners would conform to nuclear requirements where interfaces are at the facilities,,, does bring up some quality control issues...
    by dean 2/1/2012 3:55:58 PM

  • @dean uh like selling off the switchyard?
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 4:01:33 PM

  • @lillymunster A comment on the Byron nuke shutdown and the IL M2.4 quake. The Byron shutdown occured at Jan 30 10:18am CST, the USGS web page shows the quake was at "January 30, 2012 at 09:54:43 PM at epicenter" and occured about 12 hours after the Byron Unit 2 shutdown. earthquake.usgs.gov

  • all my best wishes to julian assange. i hope he gets free soon and gets adequate compensation. it is horrible how a human's existence can be ruined by a questionable prosecution. makes me shiver.
    by Edano 2/1/2012 4:36:17 PM

  • @lillymunster USGS quake data shows 5 quakes within 100 miles of Byron since 1985. The 3 largest were M4.2 June 28 2004 about 47 miles, M3.8 Feb 10 2010 about 40 miles, and M3.5 Sept 2 1999 about 25 miles. So Byron has had larger quakes that were closer than the Jan 30 M2.4 about 56 miles from the plant. Don't know if NRC or web/news has any comments about the other quakes.

  • fyi: you can still support wikileaks via the wau holland foundation: www.wauland.de it is legal of course and even tax deductible.
    by Edano 2/1/2012 4:42:16 PM

  • @Edano Indeed, either way we look at this, the timing of the accusations and the extradition request are, at the least, suspicious. And we must bare in mind he hasn't been charged yet, so I don't even see any substance to a EWA or a request for extradition. I'm puzzled with all this judicial mess.

    by Edano 2/1/2012 4:44:20 PM

  • The whole thing is rather scary in that pressure from the US state dept seemed to have much to do with the issues in other countries being inflated or pushed. Seems quite like a witchhunt
    by lillymunster 2/1/2012 4:44:44 PM

  • @lillymunster and the witchhunt they installed via paypal / amazon / ebay / twitter etc. it really scares me and consequently i cancelled all my accounts.
