  • @elainekirk sounds like the water changes could have played a part. Unit 2 has still had ongoing issues with hydrogen production so changes there can be worrying.

    by elainekirk 2/5/2012 2:19:34 AM

  • @elainekirk like newer reactors that might have these steam generators as their initial equipment?
    by lillymunster 2/5/2012 2:20:29 AM

  • @lillymunster well if the problem was known in the 70's I just wonder if the carried on regardless

  • Page 6 has specs for Mitsubishi steam generators www-pub.iaea.org
    by lillymunster 2/5/2012 2:28:09 AM

  • @elainekirk I see vague mentions of a new steel alloy being used in replacements. I have not figured out if this was the "solution" to what was found in the 70's or not. If it was the solution it isn't a very good one
    by lillymunster 2/5/2012 2:29:02 AM

  • What worries me is where the flaw started. How long has that potential manufacturing issue existed and how many of these generator replacements around the world may have a similar failure issue. I don't know if it can cause a fatal issue but they release radiation when they fail and should either be replaced or the plants stopped until a functional replacement can be proven and installed.

  • According to this a serious failure in a steam generator can be considered a LOCA and could drain off coolant water???? www.dailykos.com

  • * Some details on the bird study www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/bird-numbers-plummet-around-stricken-fukushima-plant-6348724.html A bit confusing because NHK reports the bird study is starting in May when the scientist interviewed, Timothy Mousseau, will go to Japan. But he's also a co-author to a Fuku-bird study to be released this coming week. But the Independent report indicates that the new study was conducted by researchers, from Japan, USA and Denmark. So presumably Mousseau's role in the new study was as a remote consultant to scientists on-the-scene in Japan.

    by lillymunster 2/5/2012 3:27:12 AM

  • @elainekirk I think many of these problems simply need more debate. There is factual evidence of a problem somewhere but the media will maybe report it and if they do they go to the NEI for a response or the operator and either one feeds them a line of BS that gets printed. When there is actual public discussion the talking points fall apart fast.
