  • @elainekirk, more details on that bird study here cricket.biol.sc.edu But curiously a couple of the authors on that study previously published research showing that birds avoid higher radiation areas:

"Birds in Chernobyl choose to nest in sites with lower levels of background
radioactivity, researchers discover, but how they can tell remains a mystery.

  • @Ian, the patients in the first study had brain tumors which were treated with radiotherapy with very high doses affecting the hypophysis, that is the part of the brain that controls the release of sex hormons. No surprise that that influenced libido! BTW any kind of malignant growth would affect my libido for sure, and if it were for purely psychological reasons. The link to the second study does not work for me. The third study was published in 1981, and chemotherapy apparently was not an option then. Hence, those patients received very high doses on the gonades. At that time genetic testing was not as advanced as it is today, no sequencing yet. Genetic modifications may have been missed.

  • Last update for unit 2 TEPCO
After that, we have observed the tendency of temperature at the upper
head of the bottom of PCV. Because we found the temperature has risen
again (approximate 66.1 °C at 11:00 pm on February 4), at 12:52 am on
February 5, we changed the water injection volume to Unit 2 reactor
through the feed water system from approx. 4.8 m3/h to approx. 5.8 m3/h
(the water injection through the reactor core spray system remains
approx. 3.8 m3/h). At this moment, the temperature indicates 67.4 °C (as
of 5:00 am on February 5). we will monitor it continuously. www.tepco.co.jp

  • Could mean Feb 5th instead of "five days"

    by dyan 2/6/2012 12:56:08 AM

  • no, 5 days in feb. means the same in japanese as feb 5. the latter is meant, because the temps were not that high 5 consecutive days. furthermore tepco never says ":04:00 pm". they always use the 24 hour system which must mean "16:00". so i think this is a wrong information. reading time for instruments is neither at 4:00 nor at 16:00.

  • One thermometer high at Fukushima No.2 reactor

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant says one of the thermometers in the damaged No.2 reactor has been indicating a rise in temperature.

Tokyo Electric Power Company says one of the 3 thermometers at the bottom of the reactor read 71.7 degrees Celsius as of 4 PM on Sunday, as compared to about 45 on January 27th.

The temperature rose about 25 degrees in about 10 days.

TEPCO has rearranged water pipes in a bid to cool the reactor more efficiently.

The company says 2 other thermometers, also placed at the bottom of the reactors, have been reading about 45 degrees.

TEPCO notes the injection of cooling water was partially suspended when plumbing work was conducted on January 26th.

It says the procedure may have changed the way the water circulated inside the reactor, possibly preventing the system from sufficiently cooling down the nuclear fuel.

TEPCO adds it does not know exactly why only one thermometer is showing higher temperatures.

The company plans to monitor the situation, while examining the possibility of increasing the volume of cooling water if temperatures continue to rise.

    by lillymunster 2/6/2012 1:55:20 AM

  • @Peter, that first study wasn't a good choice, but the third study you say refers to radiation applied to the gonads in fact expressly states in the sentence I quoted that it refers to "total body exposure and low dose ranges," the effects of which "include impaired fertility because of radiosensitivity of the precursor cells of the gametes."

The idea that because radio-therapy doses are higher than most exposures in Japan we can assume there's no sex effect, relies on a non-linear-effect thesis, which isn't generally well supported.

For men: "radiation therapy can cause problems with getting and keeping an erection. Sexual changes happen very slowly over a period of six months to one year after radiation therapy." www.cancer.gov

For women: "The side effects of radiation therapy, such as being tired or in pain, can lower your sexual desire." www.cancer.gov
