  • @ elaine.. you have that right.. just think.. weed get up in to the temporary electrical feed systems and short things out, or get up around the pump shaft and get tangled.. it's a big deal I believe.... @ lilly.. permanent piping is best.. from what I have seen tho.. hose after hose going over hose after hose
    by dean 2/9/2012 5:24:18 PM

  • @elaine.. I saw that.. gunderson also had a document that was sent to the NRC questioning the AP1000 DESIGN.. I posted it in here yesterday
    by dean 2/9/2012 5:25:16 PM

  • @dean the heat from the radiated water in the pipes will encourage growth too?

    by elainekirk 2/9/2012 5:25:58 PM

  • @elaine yes and when the sun shines in the spring and summer.. they need some spray for annual weeds that start in the winder and perenials of course
    by dean 2/9/2012 5:26:15 PM

  • @dean hard to say exact numbers. There seems to be many families that had a foreign connection (extended family living outside Japan) left the country. It sounds like many moved to Niigata after fleeing there right after the accident started. Lots of expats have left. Chiba is seeing such a flight of population it is causing problems for the area now.

  • STUK: The radioactive iodine that was detected in Finland came from Budapest

..samples collected 16 – 23 January....Iodine also occurred in some samples after this period..
..also at least in Sweden, Norway, Germany, Austria and Poland..

..HAEA's investigation showed that the radioactive iodine originated from a plant in Budapest where radioisotopes are handled..

  • The reactor in Budapest, when I was researching the first incident I found that the rad spikes had been going on for over a year. I think that thing had been leaking for a while. Why they let them restart without better assurances the problem was solved or more monitoring?
    by lillymunster 2/9/2012 5:34:00 PM

  • @lillymunster No problem anymore! ;)

"According to the Hungarian authorities, the technology to handle iodine and the production in general will be improved so that a similar situation would not occur again."

  • Fukushima prefectural officials inspect the backup diesel generator in the basement of the Fukushima No. 2 nuclear plant's No. 1 reactor building. The generator was knocked out when the basement was flooded by the March 11, 2011 tsunami.

  • mdn.mainichi.jp team of Fukushima prefectural officials visited the Fukushima No. 2 nuclear plant on Feb. 8, marking the first prefectural inspection of the plant since the March 11, 2011 disasters forced it to shut down.

"Right now, the most important tasks are to keep the reactors in cold shutdown and cool the spent fuel rods while preparing safety measures to deal with any unexpected problems," said the deputy head of the prefecture's living environment division following the inspection. "I felt that work there to maintain emergency power supplies and prevent flooding of the plant buildings was progressing.

Japan made the demand during Feb. 6 talks in Washington between Japan-U.S. defense and foreign affairs officials focused on the roadmap for the realignment of U.S. forces in the country, seeking their return ahead of the planned relocation of U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Ginowan.

  • mdn.mainichi.jp temporary storage site for radioactive waste generated under a model decontamination project around the disaster-struck Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant was unveiled to reporters on Feb. 9.

To prevent radioactive materials from contaminating groundwater, temporary disposal sites are lined with waterproof sheets. Materials produced in the decontamination operation -- including earth and plant matter -- are categorized, packed into thick bags and lifted into the disposal site by crane.

"We are building these (temporary disposal) sites in such a way that, even when full of waste, radiation levels won't rise in the surrounding area," a Japan Atomic Energy Agency official in charge of the operation stated

  • @elainekirk yea if we can set a "bot" account to auto tweet new article. The problem is it needs to no tweet peer review posts. I think that was the problem before, it was tweeting everything? So if we did a peer review post of not ready for consumption data it would get tweeted. There might be a way around it? Maybe Veenie knows?

  • Nuclear waste is a hot issue

    Situation in Canada

"No matter where the country's nuclear waste is eventually stored, a permanent solution is required.
The waste is presently kept at several locations, mostly in Ontario, in temporary containers projected to last 50 to 100 years."
