  • I know it's hard, but try not to dwell on the worst case. Your boyfriend is with very capable personnel doing a very important job. The Navy has been very protective of its' personnel during this crisis. He is in good hands.
    by NiteSpawn 3/27/2011 2:57:01 AM

  • @Nancy Well both the WHO and the JAIF put out spreadsheet formatted status updates.....though some seem to think that JAIF is losing its significance these days.
    by borrrden 3/27/2011 2:57:06 AM

  • @stef Voluntary leave to where? Outside the country?
    by borrrden 3/27/2011 2:57:23 AM

  • Would be good to find a web page that makes coherent sense of or at least translates all these radiation metrics that have health/medical implications for the benefit of the rest of us folks.
    by alblee 3/27/2011 2:57:37 AM

  • Just my opinion, and take it fwiw from an old Navy guy who ran a classified vault, but I think we should stay away from asking specific questions about where people may be stationed or where they may work. You never know who may be monitoring the boards...us or "them".
by James Ward 3/27/2011 2:57:41 AM

  • There is good info here that pertains to Yokosuka. It is all factual and up to date.

  • @alblee You mean a chart that plots sieverts and their effects? In that case look here: twitpic.com and here xkcd.com

by borrrden via Twitpic 3/27/2011 2:58:58 AM

  • @ nite spawn... thanks..that's what I hear. He hasnt said much- but he does always say how much he misses us and wants to just come home! :) I am hearing that the navy is built to handle things like this. He is acting LCPO for his division and probably kicking major butt! :)
    by stef 3/27/2011 2:59:01 AM

  • @ borrrden, yes the states.
    by stef 3/27/2011 2:59:10 AM

  • Good point, @JamesWard. That's why the military has a generic though proprietary post office box system.
    by alblee 3/27/2011 2:59:11 AM

  • @stef I don't know if you are talking about just military, but I did not leave the country.

  • Thanks, @borrrden. Yeah something like that, the more laymanized and rational use of the numbers, the better. Nice!
    by alblee 3/27/2011 3:00:42 AM

  • @ nite spawn- Im on the ombudsman email list for the mccampbell- a lot of that info comes in that email- so thanks for the site info! Also borrrden- I am not totally sure of the situation for non military Americans out there- anyone I know is military.
    by stef 3/27/2011 3:00:59 AM

  • Anyone know when they should know what equipment (pumps, monitors) should work in any of the reactors (1-4)? Shouldnt they know by now what they're dealing with?
    by Yuri 3/27/2011 3:01:09 AM

  • Thanks, @GeorgeGibb. Yuri now auto-allowed.
    by alblee 3/27/2011 3:01:42 AM

  • @Yuri How should we know if they should or shouldn't know by now? I'm sure they are doing the best they can, and they have restored some instruments at 1, 2 and 4.
    by borrrden 3/27/2011 3:02:07 AM

  • @alblee no! thankyou =)

  • More robots sent to Fukushima

Various: It’s still too dangerous for humans to look inside three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Instead, robots and remote cameras will give operators details of the conditions. Other remote tools, such as unmanned fire engines, will help douse the reactors, writes David Hambling for New Scientist. This may be the start of a long robotic engagement. “I would anticipate that we are going to see a phenomenal enterprise of remote work systems that are brought to bear over the weeks, months, and years of recovering Fukushima,” says Carnegie Mellon University robotics researcher Red Whittaker to NPR’s Geoff Brumfiel.

  • I apologize for the dumb question. I thoight maybe someone might have read any target date to do equipment testing.
    by Yuri 3/27/2011 3:04:57 AM

  • Thanks, @JamesWard for the link.
    by alblee 3/27/2011 3:05:11 AM

  • Thanks, @Yuri, could you be more specific about the equipment testing query?
    by alblee 3/27/2011 3:05:48 AM

  • @James Ward. everything that has been mentioned here is available from CFAY's facebook page.
    by NiteSpawn 3/27/2011 3:06:53 AM

  • @Yuri Equipment test is ongoing, bit by bit constantly :). However, because there is so much damage it is hard to say when they will be able to fix what. Here is the latest IAEA status update that mentions that. www.iaea.org

  • Kyodo - over 1,000 milliserts per hour found in water at no. 2 reactor.
    by Scilla 3/27/2011 3:09:29 AM

  • can someone explain different theories behind the highly radioactive water in the turbine buildings
    by dan 3/27/2011 3:09:33 AM

  • @NiteSpawn Do you have a link to CFAY's facebook page?
by James Ward 3/27/2011 3:09:34 AM

  • @dan If there is a leak in the turbine itself, it will release any water that has built up inside of it (the radioactive steam flows directly from the reactor to the turbine). That would be my guess. It doesn't seem to make sense to me that it is coming directly from the containment vessel, because the turbine is in a separate building.
    by borrrden 3/27/2011 3:11:08 AM

  • OK... must go do radio... I think I'll track No Nukes. Fitting.
    by radioguy 3/27/2011 3:11:43 AM

  • Thanks, @George. Rest well deserved.
    by alblee 3/27/2011 3:12:33 AM

  • My main question was about the pump testing. From what I've read, getting fresh water recirculating is the holy grail. But it also seems almost impossible to get those pumps working again because of the extensive damage. And since the radiation and heat is so high, it seems impossible to install new pimps and piping. My question is: when do they admit they wont have new pumps? Am I missing something?

  • Looks like Dr. Kaku agrees with me: Dr. Michio Kaku’s Recommendations to the Prime Minister.

“If I had the ear of the Prime Minister, I would recommend the “Chernobyl Option.”

Put the Japanese Air Force on alert
Assemble a huge fleet of helicopters. Put shielding underneath them.
Accumulate enough sand, boric acid, and concrete to smother these reactors, to entomb them forever.

This is what the Soviets did in 1986, calling out the Red Air Force and sandbagging the reactor with over 5,000 tons of concrete and sand.”

  • @NiteSpawn Okay...thanks....but I'm not sure why that page applies to me or my links.
