It does point to an increase of leukemia (with fatality rates much higher than thyroid cancer), but says it's inconclusive. @Pat - No, they don't. Iodine is taken up by the thyroid and can easily cause thyroid cancer. Cesium is far worse as it mimics potassium and the body absorbs it as such. Know where calcium goes? To the bones. It causes leukemia. - @Pat I think it's that some of the isotopes, like iodine and cessium, mimic good minerals like potassium and the body absorbs them. Then, cause of the rad, they degrade cells. - @Pat - Radioactive Iodine is eliminated from the body, but after it does damage to your thyroid, that is why some people are concerned. In a high enough dosage it can kill thyroid cells. However, the levels of Iodine-133 currently being detected are very, very low and since the half life is approximately 5 days it will dissipate very quickly. Although I have no medical background myself, I'm much more convinced by Alexey Yablokov et al.'s study of the consequences of Chernobyl than anything the IAEA, WHO or military-industrial complex says.
