@dean - From the documentaries I've seen, it mixed with the sand initially to form solid globs as it slid and cooled. Years later, however, condensation was reaching it and causing it to return to a somewhat "oozy" state. I do not know what happened since. That information was current as of '91.

I should not have to re-post but.."I have no way of knowing how many days they have before a stainless steel component suddenly cracks, but if it were me, I would be advocating an emergency program to get pure deionzied cooling water back into this stainless steel system ASAP. In laboratory tests in boiling chlorides, cracking of stainless in tensile stress can occur within days- they have at most a few months if they keep boiling sea water in this system and yet another disaster occurs. I am sure there are competent scientists in Japan's nuclear industry and government regulators. I hope they are on top of this threat!" www.theoildrum.com

@narv891 Yes, we're talking different things. Your link (which does show Cl) is from Mar 25 and Reactor #2. My link was from Sat and for Reactor #2.

Oh, It becomes clear. They are looking for the interaction with the sea water. Says large amounts of it were created when sea water was IRRATIATED by nuke bombs. Looking for rad mixing it up wiht chlorine in seawater?

@Ralph: I can't imagine how. It's the same people doing it for two weeks and counting - working under extreme stress and probably with very little 'real' rest, adequate nutrition, etc. Couple it with the knowledge that you are on a suicide mission (these guys know the real story), and one starts to tune out. Hence, focus is lost and mistakes are made. Officials say that it'll take weeks or even months before its stable. The human psyche has limits especially when stretched that thin.

Should we really be worried about all this? Shouldn't we follow Wade Allison's lead (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12860842 ) and embrace radiation instead of running away from it? If no one died because of Three Mile Island and fewer than 50 people died because of Chernobyl, why are we then making ourselves miserable? Doesn't the IAEA's report on Chernobyl represent the scientific concensus? Isn'pdfs\plutonium2.pdf ). Why are we wasting our time ignoring the scientific concensus? And if the scientific concensus is that there is virtually no risk to man-made radiation, aren't governments acting criminally by imposing ever tighter radiation standards? What is the scientific concensus on man-made radiation?

@dean No, they said it would take days to analyze. TEPCO sent samples out to be independently checked for plutonium: www3.nhk.or.jp
