  • @Matsuoko But they aren't, that's the problem. Also, this gyu was on CNN yesterday: www.cnn.com Is he overreacting? In his opinion there absolutely WILL be 3 core meltdowns. What do you assess the chances of that are?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:02:34 PM

  • I'm not saying it won't have severe heath effects, just that the LD50 figure of about 4.5 Sv refers to WHOLE BODY exposure.
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:02:42 PM

  • 1 Sv = 1 Sv. The whole way they calculate 1Sv is to get the Bq / kg or Bq / L , look at the isotope, and then calculate the Sieverts BASED ON THE TYPE OF CONTACT. The coefficient for soil vs ingestion is MUUUUUUCH LOWER. If they have 1 Sv, it's 1 Sv. The type of contact is ALREADY FACTORED IN TO THIS.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:04:10 PM

  • @NiDan Again, how do you have whole body exposure from SOIL? Are you saying radioactive soil is not harmful at all because it's not whole body?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:04:42 PM

  • @elise The Oklo site chugged along for millions of years.
by Jim Carver 3/28/2011 6:04:43 PM

  • @Jojo Is there a possibility that this has in some sense already happened? What would the chemical signatures be?
    by es 3/28/2011 6:04:47 PM

  • @Jojo - I have no idea what he's referring to when he says meltdown. If he means core melt, that's already happened. If he means core melt with RPV breach, it's possible but we have no indication that will happen. That's most likely to happen if the site is evacuated.

  • Regarding TEPCO's Pu measurements...

    Excerpt from:
Toxicological Profile For Plutionium, U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services, November 2010, page 176
    www.atsdr.cdc.gov

Average plutonium concentrations in surface soil from fallout range from about 0.01 to 0.1 pCi/g (4x10-4 – 4x10-3 Bq/g) (DOE 2005a). Essentially all of the plutonium found in the surface of the Earth’s crust is a product of human activity occurring over the past 60 years (Ketterer and Szechenyi 2008).

The above cited range (4x10-4 to 4x10-3 Bq/g) are Bq/gram. Converted to Bq/kg the level is 4x10-1 to 4x10. I am not a scientist, but the math seems to suggest that TEPCO numbers reflect "natural" fallout values.

    by kgriff 3/28/2011 6:05:22 PM

  • I concur with Hank. I think they knew two weeks ago.
    by Sin 3/28/2011 6:05:36 PM

  • Yes, everyone, please look at this guy here on CNN yesterday: www.cnn.com In his opinion, he says there ABSOLUTELY WILL be 3 meltdowns. What do you think?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:05:42 PM

  • @Pedro Jesus: true; science defies common sense sometimes. I just didn't 'buy' the information I was being fed. Especially about statements like that the measurements in the sea water weren't necessarily from the plant. Argh. I'll keep reading the 'news', see how creatively they word their statements, then come here to try to understand.
    by sheilatoulouse 3/28/2011 6:05:48 PM

  • @Jojo : i don't think anyone can clearly predict anything. you can only give probabilities for scenarios. personally, i think that the worst case scenario is very likely.
    by Matsuoko 3/28/2011 6:06:11 PM

  • @NiDan That is a good explanation.. I have tried to point it out but it is hard to explain to people.
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:06:14 PM

  • @sheilatoulouse, that reminds me, I was drafted during the cold war. We were drilling for the nuclear flash every day lying on the ground with filter masks and little plastic tarps over the head, counting the time between flash and bang, and spoonfuls of decontamination paste afterwards. The ritual was totally ridiculous. But it sharpened the senses.
by Peter Melzer 3/28/2011 6:06:15 PM

  • @Hank Scorpio That's what he's talking about.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:06:22 PM

  • @Jojo - Breach of the vessels by corium?
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:06:35 PM

  • The mentioning of Roibots.......They had Robots for over a week from Germany and we have NOT heard a word about that either
    by VeenOui 3/28/2011 6:06:55 PM

  • @Hank Scorpio That's what he's talking about. He's talking about a breach, evacuation, followed by evaporation/leakage and then massive core meltdown/container breach. Is this guy nuts or sobering?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:07:25 PM

  • JoJo - the issue with soil contamination as I understand (again, no expert), is that it means people are likely to ingest contaminants in their food, water, air, etc. This is the real danger, because iodine gets stored in the thyroid, cesium can get stored in bone, etc... Then people are exposed over time, which is really bad.
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:07:32 PM

  • @Hank Scorpio There's no question that the media is using terminology very loosely. They don't understand this stuff. They admitted core melts of 50% over a week ago ago.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:07:35 PM

  • @George Gibb: How do I attach a still shot I Grabbed/Captured off a video of an injured Fukushima worker that shows a large burn to his left brachium?
    by Tenzing 3/28/2011 6:07:44 PM

  • @Matsuoko Wow.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:07:49 PM

  • @Tenzing Photobucket it (or something) then link it.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:08:33 PM

  • @Jojo - If radiation at the site grows, I do think the site will be evacuated. If so, I think they'll find a way to permanently vent the RPVs and the outer containment before leaving to prevent an explosive breach of the RPVs. As to the melt? It's hard to say. We have no idea what the contents of the outer containments are.
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:09:04 PM

  • @sheilatoulouse I understand your stress. I've been spending a lot of time trying to figure out what is going on but I've found a lot more disinformation in some news channels, particularly CNN and NHK, that I've found discrepancies in TEPCO's reports. So I still trust the official reports more than the news head lines. I check the credibility of the reports comparing different statements from different sources. When they match then you know they're telling the truth - when they don't someone is making some mistake.
by Pedro Jesus 3/28/2011 6:09:17 PM

  • @NiDan There are different coefficients for those as well. There are individual coefficients FOR EACH ISOTOPE for: air inhalation, ingestion by food, ingestion by water, soil, and fallout/surface contamination. They already take into account the exposure to the body from each, which is why ingestion is orders of magnitude more deadly. Which is why when they say 2-6 Sv, THEY ALREADY TOOK INTO ACCOUNT their exposure type.

  • by kanna 3/28/2011 6:09:33 PM

  • @Matsuoko/Others- yeah... this is a problem for JAPAN. All the experts have said this. From what I personally have felt spiritually (OPINION) this will get much worse before it gets any better at all. I feel the lack of information is a sign of how dire the situation truly is.
    by Meretisa 3/28/2011 6:10:11 PM

  • @Tenzing You have to use a link from a valid url
by George Gibb 3/28/2011 6:10:12 PM

  • Again, they were standing in the water and they had contamination of 2-6 Sv. So... do you think it would have been only 2- 6 Sv if they DRANK THE WATER? So clearly they already took into account the method of exposure.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:10:22 PM

  • TYPE, YES - LOCATION NO. The Sv normalizes SOURCES (i.e. types) of radiation - not all aspects of exposure. It is different to be exposed to a dose of radiation to your hand or to your chest.
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:10:53 PM

  • @sheilatoulouse That's why most of us are here. It's a community well mixed geographically and technically. We've all been trying as hard as we can to cut through the murky information.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:10:54 PM

    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:11:18 PM

  • @George -- Any stats on number of participants/viewers on this page? Just curious.
    by Markfm 3/28/2011 6:11:28 PM

  • @NiDan Yes, of course. But when they are talking about surface contamination/soil contamination, they assume the contamination is going to concentrate from your feet up.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:11:40 PM

  • @Meretisa - To answer your earlier question, I have no problem with you, but your description of not eating and sleep issues makes me wonder if you don't have an emotional disturbance of some kind. I don't think you're crazy, but your reaction is highly abnormal. I say that in the nicest way. :)
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:11:41 PM

  • @NiDan See I told you they don't understand
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:11:52 PM

  • @Jojo no
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:12:08 PM

  • @NiDan But you don't have 2-6Sv to their feet, .1 Sv to their eyes, .2 Sv to their liver, etc. It's just 2-6 Sv.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:12:10 PM

  • @All I think we lose perspective that there is no quick fix - but every day they can keep working its a bonus
by George Gibb 3/28/2011 6:12:18 PM

  • jojo - my comment was about the workers exposed to water in the turbine room - NOT about the soil contamination
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:12:22 PM

  • @Jojo That's why it's better to use Bq's
