  • @Jojo Good point re the Sv exposure already having been calculated
    by es 3/28/2011 6:12:33 PM

  • @Jojo again no
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:12:33 PM

  • @Jojo I came here because I was hoping I was wrong and am seekign to "just be nuts" but it isn't turning out that way. @Hank- thank you. I know. I was quite worried about myself as well, but am able to eat and drink and have been to doctor about it who says that despite it all I'm "normal" range for all bloodwork etc.

  • Jojo - you are wrong. You can exactly do that, and say 2-6 Sv to feet only.
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:13:09 PM

  • Thanks.
    by Markfm 3/28/2011 6:13:13 PM

  • @NHK Listener I get what you guys are saying, but what you don't get is that if they would have fallen in the water or touched it with their hands their Sieverts would have been MUCH HIGHER. We're talking 10E9 Bq/kg of exposure of certain isotopes.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:13:17 PM

  • @Jojo Exposure was to the feet only
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:14:00 PM

  • @Meretisa I don't know if this will freak you out or calm you (my hope is the latter), but I can visibly detect fear when I hear nuclear experts talking about the future.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:14:06 PM

  • Okay - look - I think we both understand what the other is saying...
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:14:23 PM

  • @NHK Listener That's hard to imagine if they were doing any kind of work.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:14:25 PM

  • @Jojo Myself as well. And on nhk and other sites as well. It is disturbing to witness.
    by Meretisa 3/28/2011 6:14:45 PM

  • @NHK Listener I got that. ANY SOIL exposure is going to be to "the feet". They already take that into consideration when considering the Sv level. My point is that the Sv they were exposed to takes into account ONLY that they were exposed on their feet. If they DRANK the water or even ROLLED AROUND in it, Sv level would be 10x, 100x, ???
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:15:06 PM

  • @radioguy Then it must be a conspiracy then.. I gotta go
by NHK Listener 3/28/2011 6:15:11 PM

  • @Meretisa I started really noticing it yesterday.
by Jim Carver 3/28/2011 6:15:30 PM

  • JOJO NO ONE BESIDES YOU IS TALKING ABOUT THE SOIL
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:15:33 PM

  • I find it interesting that TEPCO released their information about the plutonium being found in the soil around the reactor right after it became known Greenpeace was conducting radiation testing in the vacated areas. Coincidence, or is TEPCO trying to report the plutonium before Greenpeace found it?
by James Ward 3/28/2011 6:15:35 PM

  • @Sin @Hank Scorpio - yes - partial core melt has pretty clearly already happened. Worse in some of the units than others. The question now is whether RPV breach can be averted, and if not, will the primary containment hold (I postulate that Unit 2 primary containment is already ruptured).

    Bears repeating:

by Joshua Diamond 3/28/2011 6:15:43 PM

  • WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE WATER IN THE TURBINE BUILDING
    by NiDan 3/28/2011 6:15:44 PM

  • @NiDan I think so. :) My point is that they WERE exposed to 2-6Sv, it doesn't really matter if it's their feet. They should thank God it was only their feet and they didn't ingest any. They would probably be dead now.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:15:58 PM

  • Does anyone know how much boron (if any) the responders have been able to add to reactors 1-3 over the past few days? Apparently the French are supplying advice and boron, but I don't know if it's there yet or if there's any way to get it into the reactor vessels right now.
    by Alaskan 3/28/2011 6:15:58 PM

  • @NiDan Yes.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:16:04 PM

  • @NiDan I'm talking about the contaminated water where the workers got 2-6 Sv.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:16:39 PM

  • @NiDan And that level of exposure of 2 Sv to the feet will be the EXACT SAME % of fatality as if you ingest 2 Sv! Exactly the same.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:17:33 PM

  • @Alaskan Nuetron absorbtion seems to be paramount at the moment.
by Jim Carver 3/28/2011 6:17:53 PM

  • @All Round up of todays news articles pinned
by George Gibb 3/28/2011 6:18:20 PM

  • @Joshua Diamond - According to a poster at ArsTechnica, the Mark I containment is not designed for a corium breach. arstechnica.com
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:18:30 PM

  • @NHK It doesn't have to be a conspiracy. They washed and cleaned the rest for surface contamination. Boots hold water. There could be higher exposure in boots. I'm just saying that the other exposure is probably minimal enough by comparison it faded into background.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:18:37 PM

  • Say the level of contamination is 100000000 Bq/ kg. Well, if you ingest the water, you might get 200 Sv. If you stand in it, it might be 1 Sv. If you lie down in it, it might be 15 Sv. If you eat spinach with the same level, it might be 250 Sv. They take into account HOW it comes in contact with you to get a Sv.
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:19:01 PM

  • I have continued to notice that the reactor pressure on#1 is building, now up to .400 area. Does anyone know what the design limit is on this vessel ???
    by wtm 3/28/2011 6:19:10 PM

  • There has got to be humor: We were having a discussion of these topics at our dinner table last night, and my very bright 14 year old son was making some very good points, and asking some very good questions.

Then he pointed out to me that until last week he would have thought that "boron" was the quantum unit of "boring", used to measure certain activities. "That lecture exposed us to a high flux of borons per hour"... :)
by Joshua Diamond 3/28/2011 6:19:34 PM

  • @George Gibb Yeah, shut up and go read. ha kidding, don't get mad :)
by Jim Carver 3/28/2011 6:19:34 PM

  • @Jim, do you mean they have been able to add the boron?
    by Alaskan 3/28/2011 6:20:20 PM

  • @Joshua Diamond - A Boron is someone whose retardation is so bad it's not even entertaining.
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:20:32 PM

  • @Hank Scorpio how thick is the concrete under the reactors?
    by kgriff 3/28/2011 6:20:37 PM

  • It is also interesting to notice that JAIF will only show good news in their listings, they will not show that the reactor is increasing pressure, only shows that it had decreased earlier.
    by wtm 3/28/2011 6:20:49 PM

  • There's a point hidden in Jojo's point. Now that we know there's plutonium in the soil, the act of walking around will track it from place to place, maybe into a puddle.
    by radioguy 3/28/2011 6:20:52 PM

  • Question regarding the exposure of the feet: They wore only shoes, at a wet environment- which was contaminated. They got burns. If they had still wet socks and already burns, is it possible that contamination got into the blood flow? And if so what does THAT mean regarding exposure and risks?
    by Hermine 3/28/2011 6:20:53 PM

  • @Meretisa, As I see it, we congregate here because we are seeking for answers whatever the motivation. Explanations provide peace of mind. I hope that the information shared here will help us and others to make better informed decisions. AND the people who are suffering because of this whole catastrophe, quake, water and radiation, are on my mind.
by Peter Melzer 3/28/2011 6:21:01 PM

  • @Matsuoko Are you in Japan?
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:21:08 PM

  • @Joshua: Boron = boring moron?
    by Alaskan 3/28/2011 6:21:12 PM

  • @kgriff - I don't know that, but the worry is water in that area. Hot corium hits the water and there's a big bada boom.
by Hank Scorpio 3/28/2011 6:21:22 PM

  • Regarding the potential for a large steam explosion if molten corium contacts standing water after melting out of the RPV (scroll down) DISCLAIMER: I am not a scientist, nor do I have any idea if this is an actual danger at Fukushima || en.wikipedia.org
    by Jay77 3/28/2011 6:21:32 PM

  • @Joshua Diamond :)
    by Jojo 3/28/2011 6:21:38 PM

  • @Alaskan No, idk. I was just saying that they think it's extremely important right now.
