I live in Japan and know some engineers at a nuclear power plant. One of them was told back in mid March to be ready to go to Fukushima Dai-ichi on April 18th. Others have/are going too. For what it's worth this seems to indicate that early on there was an awareness in the Japanese power companies that this crisis would probably be a drawn out one. Also these engineers are being drafted from far western Japan and therefore from a different power company to TEPCO. Another indication of the scale of the crisis perhaps. Thus Japanese power plants far from Fukushima will be operating without certain of their engineers, at a time when they are trying to produce as much electricity as possible. Having spent time around one nuclear power station here, I know there is not much of a margin to safely allow for temporary absence of too many staff.

@fitter @Alblee, Thank you for your support. I am in SW Kochi (Shikoku). No, we are not really get quakes here. Last night there was a 5.7 quake (Japanese 3) centered on Tanegashima (south of Kyushu), which registered here as a 1 on the Japanese scale (we could just feel it in our house). My wife and I are finding that certain Japanese newspapers are better (relatively speaking) sources of infomation than news on TV. It is so hard to get a sense of what is really happening though...I just know that it is not good. I do appreciate this site. Thank you everyone.

Would be good to infer some local color from where you are from time to time -- mood on the street, situation in the fresh produce, meats, fish markets, local government unit actions/moves, power rationing situation, agriculture, transport, etc etc etc.
Useful information doesn't always come to us directly, so even indirect or peripheral insights can be very valuable. I do know that information is like eggs, the fresher the better. So please feel free to stay in touch and participate as much as you can.
And, if you've got like-minded friends from other prefectures who can join in, we'd love to hear from them, too.

Anybody on board who's in Taiwan?
Seems that a Taiwanese agency/institute reported ambient readings of Strontium about four days or so ago.
There's been some recent interest on this board to follow up on that.
Would be good to glean some updates, if any. Thanks.

[Correction: No ambient readings were reported from Taiwan, per se. But a newspaper April 04 report

Here is a link to newspaper report (China Post/Asia News network) that mentions Strontium in passing but apparently attributed to Taiwan's Atomic Energy Council...

There certainly seems to be no shortage of information about Strontium90 and its effects, but there is some concern expressed to some extent on this board that there seems to be a lack of coherent ambient monitoring of this isotope post-Daiichi, whether within Japan or elsewhere. If there are operating monitoring stations for Strontium, at least their data don't seem to be seeing the light of day, so far. Thanks.

Perhaps regulars of this blogroom who are based in Japan can contribute added value by helping to sniff more closely for Strontium monitoring data, beyond the envelope of conventional sources to embrace seemingly secondary or indirect but equally credible sources like academic / medical / research institutions/labs/orgs/societies, etc. Thanks.
