@James Ward They can only distribute as much donations as they receive. The families will be receiving compensation from TEPCO I imagine...although whether or not they can afford it is a troubling matter as well.

@James Ward $3,500 pp would be an insult if it was restitution from TEPCO or the Gov, but apparently this is from the Red Cross alliance of charities, so it's all good I'd venture.

@RebaQ In some places the clocks stopped at 3 pm, when the tsunami struck, making it 14 minutes in those places.

@ColorMeRed Yes, safer technology does in fact exist!! It is through an ironic cycle of protesting nuclear development that nuclear accidents are somewhat promoted by the renewal of older technology instead of its replacement.

@George Gibb Just look at the budgets the US puts together on an annual basis at all levels. Education has been cut every year for the last couple of decades, and college tuition has almost risen to the point where only the wealthy can attend. We're reaping what we've sown.

@Rob in SF If I remember correctly, those people had to climb up the antennas on the roof of a three-story structure. Out of about 30-40 people who managed to get to the roof, only 9 survived.

(Reuters) - Japan plans to extend the evacuation zone around its crippled nuclear plant because of high radiation levels, local media reported on Monday, with engineers no closer to regaining control of six reactors hit by a giant tsunami one month ago.

Concern at Japan's inability contain its nuclear crisis, caused by a March 11 earthquake and tsunami, is mounting with Prime Minister Naoto Kan's ruling party suffering embarrassing losses in local elections on Sunday and neighboring China and South Korea voicing criticism.

Engineers at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant north of Tokyo said on Sunday they were no closer to restoring the plant's cooling system which is critical if overheated fuel rods are to be cooled and the six reactors brought under control.

They are hoping to stop pumping radioactive water into the ocean on Monday, days later than planned.

Fukushima Governor Refuses To Meet Tepco President

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s (9501) Fukushima office Monday morning said President Masataka Shimizu will visit the Fukushima prefectural government offices at around 1:30 p.m today.

However, Shimizu's request to meet with Fukushima Governor Yuhei Sato has been rejected.

Shimizu plans to hold a news conference to apologize to the people of Fukushima Prefecture for the inconvenience caused by the crisis at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

The governor also declined to meet with Shimizu in March. e.nikkei.com

Don't know if this was posted yet...EPA numbers for milk, air, precip, etc. www.epa.gov The interesting one to me was milk, 4/10, in Hawaii - I believe that would be six times the standard for drinking water. Youch
