I have to say I've been annoyed by the crowd that says "It can't get as bad as Chernobyl. It's shut down and they had a graphite moderator." Bla bla bla. They have no imagination.

have been away from here, but just had CNN on and had a "expert" covering the upgrade to a 7, and it was just like, no big deal, like they were talking about the weather....they only covered it for a few minutes, because the burqua ban in France is apparently more important.

no doubt this will be the worst nuclear desaster so far. the emitted radiation will be 4 times chernobyl and the damage to environment even more serious. and this was clear from the first 4 days on.

@VeenOui That would be hard to get a figure on due to the number of people who are already out of area or just outright missing. You could probably get a better guess at it just looking at the populations of the cities being affected by the zone..

What I find shocking is the huge discrepancies in estimated Chernobyl-related deaths. This goes from 9,000 extra deaths over a 95-year period (WHO study) to 900,000 extra deaths in the first 15 years (Yablokov/New York Academy of Sciences meta-study). Two orders of magnitude difference. A totally unacceptable situation from a public health point of view. How can public health risk assessments and policies be based on such wide-ranging data or interpretations? Much more scientific concensus is needed. And in the case of Fukushima well-defined and well-funded protocols are needed to track the long-term health effects of the Fukushima fall-out. That is the least the Japanese government would owe to the affected population. Unfortunately these protocols are not yet in place.

I think looking at the announcments.."Radiation leak may exceed amount in Chernobyl accident: TEPCO" and raising accident level to 7 TEPCO and GoJ will make some sort of major announcement in coming days. They were probable under false hope that they might be able to get a handle on the situation but now they can finally say that situation is probably still "just" under control

@Cup The current govt. in the area of Chernobyl is busy denying late onset diseases in people that helped with the disaster. They claim they can't know for sure that the radiation exposure caused their illness and deny them. No checks to write and it keeps the numbers of illness and death tied to the accident nice and low. There have been a few news stories written about the survivors. They got a pretty raw deal.

I think we should show how low we think they have sunk in using chernobyl . This was a company that has caused it's host country (I chose my words carefully they are an integral part of global companies through shares and ownership) to go through one of the most terrible experiences and they stand there and tell them it isn't as bad as chernobyl. Dear Tepco chernobyl is not Japan you are standing in Japan speaking to the Japanese people and you brush off their suffering by telling them basically that they are lucky!!

@Nancy: I personally an exceptionally talented girl in Kiev (about 80kms) from chernobyl who got thyroid cancer. Her life was devastated at that time. She said that there were countless instances of young children and young adults who got cancer. She was 21 at that time. Her parents were engineers so they were able to get her operated. Not everyone was that fortunate

The six additional villages / towns NW to be evacuated had a total population of ~117 K in better times. The largest two will only be partially evacuated, and many of the residents are among the tsunami victims, or the earlier refugees. So all in all perhaps 10-50K additional people need to evacuate?

Core operating pressure is actually about 7 MPa (1000 psi), but no idea how much the core/ rpv max pressure can be now, with all of the stresses from earthquakes.
