@Optim Here's a population map from the NYT. At this point, the mandatory evacuation area was 12 mi which I believe is the most current (get my kms and miles mixed up...LOL): www.nytimes.com

@ColorMeRed if you can't get through the traffic on a good day what good is a evacuation....you'll just sit in you car for hours, then run out of gas.... happens all the time in hurricanes... we have a alert system in the 10 mile zone here, but we don't have any roads.....

@fitter Unfortunately, that's so true. If you live in a metropolitan area, you're sunk. I live 45 miles away from the Palo Verde nuclear plant in Arizona (the largest in the US) and have often wondered what "escape" route I would use in the event of an accident. I am extremely limited in choices and any road I choose would be bumper to bumper traffic.

@nancy when talking to jo also 1) do we really know that those were true readings, could dirt debre have been affecting the pressure sensor,,,, that explosion was so violent i really don't know that they could tell what they were reading... a lot of confusion.... also noticed on the thermals seems like most of the building the number have (i think) two days where they have a big dip then rise agaiin, as thought something was going a couple of those days

@Optim : fukushima city has 300 k population, fukushima pref has 2 mio. so it's right, they would have to evacuate ~ 600 k people additionally to the 145 k yet evacuated. www.citypopulation.de

@ColorMeRed we know were just going to get the six pack and go to the boat, you are not getting out of here.. one insterstate run east/west and you have to check you time before you go we're only 15 miles wide at this section... not much roadway......

@fitter there are other readings jo was questioning the validity of in other reactors. I didn't get a confirmation about the ones for 3 and if he felt they were real readings. He was tired and ducked out a bit ago.

@edano: Yepp..in the vicinity of that. From Chernobyl experience, people (children and young adults) as far as Kiev(80Kms) got cancer just in first 2 years. If this becomes 80kms, this is bad.

@Horace The Japanese Ministry of Education announced , in soil samples from several locations at a distance of 30 to 80 km from the Fukushima nuclear power plant I "extremely small" amounts of strontium 90 years) (found to have 29 half-time. edano.. I had read something today that had me wondering.. some data was reported as not being provided as much on #1, plus a note where a media person tried to get in touch with his counterpart and couldn't all of a sudden.. so I was just wondering.. I wish I could see data from the isotopes in the water

@Dean: LEt's say they sandbox these reactors. Any firther 8.5er or more EQ's or Tsunamis caused by them would still cause major damage? Is that the reason they don't want to look at sandbox solution? Given the intensity of earthquakes..I would not be surprised if any 8.5er hits the region in next 1-2 years if not earlier

They have already evacuated twice or thrice in last 10 days because of big EQ's. If another 8.5er hits, that would definitely cause more damage to the already dilapidated structure. What then?

@Horace Thanks for posting the info on strontium-90...that's what I thought I remembered from the Chernobyl disaster. I don't know what you think, but I'm really starting to dislike reading or hearing "it's only trace amounts" every single time TEPCO, or another Japanese agency reports radiation leaks from Fukushima.

well. guys.. I today had read of some suggestion in a web page that there was some special test going on .. and.. NOW DON'T GET ALARMED. .because it's not confirmed.. maybe a program to up the weapons grade plutonium...
