@MaryMary, Bobby, thank goodness that one major thing's different about this time than Chernobyl - the internet is here. Nowhere near as easy for them to stifle everything this time, but oh boy, are they still trying!

And of course, this all rightly serves to remind people about Chernobyl, and to start to ask more questions about that, and to demand answers.

Heartening that all those people in Japan managed to communicate and organise protests, in spite of the biggest media cover up of all time. But sadly may be too late now.

hi - there were over 30 earthquakes mainly mag 4-6 in a small area west of Iwaki over 48 hours or so . Not that far from the Daini plant which must have received frequent shaking. Does anyone know the status of that plant. The TEPCO site doesn't give me access to the deatiled report (appears as dots) & te last METI I can find is apr 9th.

One of our better writers should start a first draft letter. It should call on the GoJ to commission an internat'l team of civilian/military clean up crew. We could all help with specific plan, incl. chain of command, suggested client actors, a procession of goals,etc. That way no one gov't or company can reap monetary rewards, other gov'ts would be assured of knowledge, and all countries could benefit having teams be on a learning curve.

@Nancy, perhaps it would be helpful to add small arrows that point North to the pics to help with orientation. Someone pointed out the other day that the RPV diameter in the diagram actually measures 5.05m (small thing though). I am wondering about the bridge cranes on the service floor. Reactor #4 had a fairly compact green crane. Other pics of a service floor posted here earlier show a larger gantry-style crane painted yellow. Do we know which reactor is home to that crane?

@Bobby1 Did you happen to see whether the Greenpeace monitoring team produced numbers for groundwater contamination in the Fukushima area, or was it just soil and air levels they were measuring/reporting?

@UKVal still a maybe. Jo's data says it is likely on but now leaking. We can't get an image that clearly looks into the reactor well on 3. If there is something off or faked in the pressure data it is still a possibility. For what we know now it is more likely that both caps are in place but leaking. I did find an image showing leaking out of the reactor on the 16th before the loss of pressure but unsure what it means. We really need heat images from the 15-19th and I don't know if they took them those dates.

@Peter Melzer I THINK there may be 2 green cranes? #3 looks like there is an upper crane that ran the span of the building. Oh, you may be thinking of an image from nucleartourist. That was not of one of these designed plants, threw everyone off for a bit.

My take is that if the cap bolts blew from a drywell venting explosion, it's likely that the weakest bolt location would give first, blowing the cap aside as it vented upward.

@Peter, this set of images show the interior of one of the buildings there. www.flickr.com also 2 images of when they loaded mox into #3 in my pages. They might have clues. i know the smaller fuel crane is dark green.

@all would a map key pointing north on all images help orient? I have a harder time visualizing north vs south and seem to key in on relation to other reactor buildings and seaside vs. mountain but that's just me. If directional helps people figure out I can add a map key to all images, wouldn't take much to do.

Me either, but, because there are SO many pictures showing those two steam sources n R3. it's hard to imagine the cap still being in place. Did something else happen there on the 20th while the cameras were off that led to the radiation spike in Tokyo on March 22-23?

@radioguy. Jo or someone else following the data might know. Around the 20-21st reactor 3 went from a pressure reading to atmosphere pressure. I don't remember the first day they flew anything over the plant. Those very early day images could give some answers if they exist.

@radioguy we know that both the rpv and containment cap were leaking (or gone for the containment cap) as of the 20th. So it was releasing steam to the atmosphere.

On the 19th & 20th of March #3 core had a pretty noticeable pressure increase, about +230 kPa. Then on 21 March it had dropped by 170 kPa in 8 hours.

Part of the "really, really want more data points" thing. I expect that if bad things happen right near 6 or 12 you will see that the reports for those days magically are for data at 7 or 13:00.

Most spent fuel not damaged at No. 4 reactor
TEPCO says most of the spent fuel in the storage pool of the No. 4 reactor is apparently undamaged. At a news conference on Wednesday, the firm said the finding is based on interim results of an analysis of samples taken from the pool water on Tuesday.
But it said levels of radioactive substances including iodine-131 in the samples were higher than those in storage pools under normal circumstances, suggesting that some of the spent fuel may have been damaged. TEPCO says it found 220 becquerels of iodine-131 per cubic centimeter of water, as well as 88 becquerels of cesium-134 and 93 becquerels of cesium-137. The firm says the materials are usually produced by nuclear fission.
