  • my reactor of the day is #1, which seems stabilizing.
    RPV temperature has dropped below the boiling point with a good margin (20 °C), drywell one is just above the boiling point (2°C). It still seems to me the drywell has no heat source and is heated by the RPV, which would mean there is no fission running here (this does not mean there is no fuel that has escaped though). The torus seems mostly intact and the pressure in this area would suggest most water is leaking at the level of the steam pipes between the reactor and the turbines (or in the turbine building itself)
    Note: according to google translation from Japanese to english, NISA reports say that nitrogen is being injecting into the "sealed containment Reactor", which in my opinion would be the RPV and is consistent with the pressures readings we have.

  • #2. Nothing changes, it's a mess.
    Water is boiling in the RPV and in the drywell. Temperature in the drywell still suggest me there's a huge heat source there, then free running fission. Here's what I think about the "strange" torus CAMS readings: BWR is likely to have fuel leak in the torus in case of LOCA accident; given there is a lot of water flowing from the RPV to the building basement through the torus and broken fuel in the RPV, the broken fuel is likely carried outside through the torus. There are 2 possibilities:
    - a lot of broken fuel has deposited in the torus, at the point there is the less water flow (opposite to the breach); this seems unlikely to me.
    - a lot of broken fuel is carried out by the water flow and #2 CAM sensor is near the breach, then "sees" the fuel being carried away; this is what I think is happening; it would explain why the torus temperature is not very high: there would not be enough grouped fuel debris here to run a fission reaction; but it would also mean the fuel is finally leaking to the building basement and that free running fission could happen there which would be very bad.

  • #3: quite a deception: I hopped it would reach cold shutdown soon but the RPV temperature has, for now, stabilized above the boiling point. The drywell is hotter than the RPV which means there's fission running there. The torus seems likely intact: it's pressure suggest there is about 7 meters of water above, then no leak below the steam pipes level.

  • #5 seems to leak more water than it did one week ago: it seems leaking about 20 to 25 cm a day, which would be 4 to 5 m3 a day.
    #6 seems stable, water level dropping nearly 15 cm a day, when not reffiled.

  • I took some to see the bots videos; I found the videos quality very good given the conditions (low quality capture of a PC QCIF video, could be much uglier) : one can note that water condensing on the camera lens is a reason for lots of artefacts, the other being classical energic compression ones. Cryptome pics are worse than the videos: same base resolution, upscaled, with a smoothing filter applied (which is not a good idea in such a case), but lots of artefacts added by a faulty deinterlacing filter; quite a classical problem when processing interlaced videos...
    No doubt for the location of #3 videos: seeing the sunlight from inside a reactor building entry is not likely to happen, but if the building is badly damaged...

  • A word about Daini: I'm not surprised of hearing it still leaking radiation. I'm quite sure that at least 2 reactors are leaking a few water there and are "smoothly" refiled to keep the water level stable: #2 and #3 reactors show some small water level changes which I think are unlikely to happen if there was no problem there. As a comparison, #4 water level did not change a single millimeter the last 3 weeks

  • @Scilla: as #2 torus is broken, its basement should be flooded.
    #3 and #4 should also be because of the tons of water that have been spread on them to cool the SFPs. #1 may not...

  • @Mina I think that may be new. We had seen a strong light with a smear reflection down in the bay before but the round light on that one is consistent at night. The long blob is new.

  • Jo -- Which report is talking about nitrogen injection? The only ones I had seen were the reports relative to injection into the main containment, where it leaked at about 185 - 190 kPa (they then reported on radioactive steam and nitrogen leaking out). That would be good news.

  • When I look at www.tepco.co.jp , I see "we commenced the valve opening operation concerning
    injection of nitrogen gas into the reactor container vessel at 10:30 pm
    April 6th and commenced injection at 1:31am April 7th.", but that is the reference where they then found, after a couple days of 15 kPa increases, that the containment started to leak.

  • @markfm: about nitrogen injection, I tried to translate directly from NISA japanese reports; but Tepco should know better... Should have checked here before posting !
    But the pressure increase in #1 RPV cannot be explained with steam generation now that the temperature has dropped, or if the temp data are completely false (which is possible); hope they really are injecting nitrogen here.
