  • @All back from cutting grass-whew, I'm old! Looking at recent posts, I'm going to repost my comment from this morning as pertinent to thread.23April observation:
    NOTE: The major means of cooling a reactor with fuel damage caused by a LOCA is the suppression pool. This is achieved by blow down of steam thru pipes and valves into the s/p. The s/p has a very narrow range in which the water level must be kept for it to function as designed: 12'4" to 12'6". Tepco now admits that unit 1 suppression pool is full of water. This makes it extremely difficult to cool, as just pouring in more water doesn't help water around fuel to CIRCULATE and draw off heat. Water is collecting in the drywell from steam out of reactor core which is precipitating back into water. Think this makes the case for valves (which are supposed to be one-way) and pipes of the reactor coolant system being damaged by the high pressure in March. So if there is a bouyant mass of hot steam at the top of the containment vessel, it's pushing down on the water below it, applying more than normal force on the bottom of the containment vessel. NISA talks about their concerns that the mass of water could make the unit more susceptible to EQ's. I believe they specifically mean two things: that the non-design water+steam in the drywell could rupture the bottom of the drywell just from build-up; that an EQ could shift the weight/force during an EQ (think slosh) so that force is more directed at a given point vice evenly distributed. www3.nhk.or.jp

    six floors, Including the basement floor. The plan dimensions of tha building are 42 n x 42
    m at lower sections, and 42 m x 31 m at upper sections. The building is structurally
    isolated from the adjacent turbine building and radwaste building. The reactor pressure
    vessel is at the center of the building, surrounded successively by a concrete gamma shield
    wall, a bulb-shaped steel containment vessel, and a reinforced concrete.shield wall. The
    reactor pressure vessel is connected to the gamma shield wall with horizontal supports and
    the steel containment vessel Is connected to the gamma shield wall by a stabilizer. The
    containment vessel is also connected to the other reinforced concrete shield wall with shear
    lugs.

  • @elainekirk HA! I've got to laugh, sounds like typical TEPCO: It appears that no attempt was made to estimate modal damping directly from the test
    data using nethods such as half-power bandwidth or other similar ones. Instead a simulation
    analysis of the tests was performed employing an analytical model with certain assumed
    physical constants [3,4]. Apparently the physical constants were adjusted ur.til the
    analytical resonance curves and mode shapes agreed with corresponding test data. This
    analysis gave the modal damping, as a percentage of critical dampings to be 33.7, 8.4, and
    5.4 for the three modes. They jigged the test!

  • @Marie to be honest I think there are going to be big insurance problems because I have found no evidence of them complying with the 06/07 review of quake/tsunami work that chuba quote as their reason for shutting their #1 #2 Hamaoko reactors which were already more compliant than daichi's from what I can see

  • @Nancy For the video artifacsts/flashes- ionizing radiation. The youtube post shows an experiment about it. For teppycam, i think its flourescence of xenon infused water vapor. Not bright enough to see in daylight, but able to glow on firrst and last dark frames of the day.

  • @marie rich They use the same thing in Physics labs to "see" ionizing radiation. First type used is called a bubble chamber, a more advanced one is called a cloud chamber.

    TEPCO has said leakage into the sea started April 1, but records show radiation levels in seawater peaked on March 31. It is therefore highly likely that radioactive water leaked into the ocean before April 1.
    The estimated total amount leaked, 4,700 terabecquerels, is 30,000 times the amount of radioactive material contained in the water discharged on April 4-5.

  • I did some looking at the image Majjam posted. Pulled it up in photoshop on the big HD tv. The spots are very odd an do not follow a uniform pattern. Some are like a pixel removed out of the image but then there is a color halo around it. Other spots are blurry transparent color in either red or purple. It could be radioactive dust on the lens messing with digital camera. It could be some of the airborne flashes marie was talking about. How we could figure out would be to go grab all of the original source images (probably at cryptome) from that same day's images. Look at them by the time stamp that is hidden in the photo data (I can pull it up in phototshop). Then compare them by time stamp and location to see if the light spots show up before or after that photo's time stamp and if they show up in locations other than that image by #2. If there is only those light artifacts around #2 and not on images elsewhere after that image then they are likely not artifacts due to dust on the lens. Either the radiation was so high in that area or there were literal flashes in the air. Does anyone know what building the bots were in in the video where flashes were seen?
