    @elainekirk This description of the building structure from your post might be useful to Nancy!2. Description of the Structure
    Tt.e reactor building of Unit 1, which was subjected both to forced vibration tests and :
    natural earthquakes Is about 58 m in height froa the base of the foundation oat, the depth
    of embedment of which is about 14 m below ground level. The building consists of a
    reinforced concrete structure up to a height of about 43 m from the base, and a steel
    structure and truss roof above this level. The reinforced concrete structure consists of
    six floors, Including the basement floor. The plan dimensions of tha building are 42 n x 42
    m at lower sections, and 42 m x 31 m at upper sections. The building is structurally
    isolated from the adjacent turbine building and radwaste building. The reactor pressure
    vessel is at the center of the building, surrounded successively by a concrete gamma shield
    wall, a bulb-shaped steel containment vessel, and a reinforced concrete.shield wall. The
    reactor pressure vessel is connected to the gamma shield wall with horizontal supports and
    the steel containment vessel Is connected to the gamma shield wall by a stabilizer. The
    containment vessel is also connected to the other reinforced concrete shield wall with shear
    lugs.
    @elainekirk HA! I've got to laugh, sounds like typical TEPCO: It appears that no attempt was made to estimate modal damping directly from the test
    data using nethods such as half-power bandwidth or other similar ones. Instead a simulation
    analysis of the tests was performed employing an analytical model with certain assumed
    physical constants [3,4]. Apparently the physical constants were adjusted ur.til the
    analytical resonance curves and mode shapes agreed with corresponding test data. This
    analysis gave the modal damping, as a percentage of critical dampings to be 33.7, 8.4, and
    5.4 for the three modes. They jigged the test!

  • Here is a thought: We should watch whether we can see any on-going cleanup activity on the premises of the plant. It is been six weeks now and I do not see much progress in this respect. If I were in charge, columns of trucks would already remove the non-contaminated and low-level contaminated debris from the grounds. Why wait until it is more contaminated. I'd try to shake hanging debris loose from the buildings with remote controlled machines. The instability of the structures has been discussed here already. Would you want to wait until the stuff comes crushing down on you, maybe with the next quake? Why is there so little activity? Perhaps, the answer is the premises are more contaminated than anyone imagines. They used a tank to bury the plu-contaminated soil. Why? Because the radiation was to high to send a frontloader. Something to keep in mind.

  • good point Peter.. all I have seen are short clips of the remote control loader picking up debris and putting in a remote control dump truck .. the article went on to say things were so hot that the building couldn't be approached due to the debris that is HOT..

After Chernobyl, the public health office of one German state advised the public that the citizens were safe, but they would not recommend parents to let their children play in their sandboxes outsides. When true crisis unfolds, most in responsibility are unable to step up to the plate.

    The Tokyo Electric Power Company has decided to construct temporary storage tanks for highly radioactive wastewater accumulated at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

    The decision is part of the company's efforts to remove nearly 70,000 tons of wastewater pooled in turbine buildings and service tunnels in the compound of the plant. The contaminated water has been hampering work to restore reactor cooling systems.

    TEPCO plans to transfer the wastewater to an on-site waste processing facility and temporary storage tanks based on a schedule for getting the nuclear emergency under control.

    The company also plans to install water filtration and cooling systems for each reactor. Each system is designed to remove radioactive substances from the wastewater and recycle cold water into the pressure vessel to gradually cool down the nuclear fuel in the reactors.

    TEPCO initially planned to install tanks with a capacity of 27,000 tons by the end of May. However, the company is now planning to construct 31,400 tons of storage capacity by early June.

    In addition, the company plans to add tanks with a total capacity of 20,000 tons every month from June to December in case the water filtration and cooling systems cannot start operating on schedule in June. (NOT GONNA HAPPEN)

    TEPCO says the radioactive water will be sorted into 3 levels of contamination --- low, medium and high --- and will be stored accordingly.
    TEPCO regards the high level wastewater as containing radioactive substances ranging from 100 to one million Becquerels per cubic centimeter.

    To store the highly radioactive water safely, the company plans to construct special underground tanks coated with material resistant to radiation and corrosion, which have a total capacity of 10,000 tons.

    OK, problems with this story. Number one- 70,000 tons = 52,363,636 US gallons.................. 1 Olympic sized swimming pool contains 660,430 contains gallons of water.........Thus, 70,000 tons is approximately equivalent to 80 Olympic sized swimming pools worth of contaminated water that they have to store....with hundreds of tons of newly contaminated water that are created daily...and the number or tons reported has not increased to account for that. Number two- This article makes it sound like they HAVE A PLAN!!! THERE IS PROGRESS!!!! Does anyone else see the inherent stupidity of this continuing water plan they have concocted? Just seems like more back-pedaling after they had to pull a framework for a schedule of completion out of their arses.
