@Nancy That's the point people miss in that equation. Insurance costs are based on EXHAUSTIVE analysis and dismissal of risk. The reason you can't get insurance on them is that the risk is too high to afford one single payout. If the plants were truly safe and secure, insurance companies would fight tooth and nail to get and keep those high-ticket accounts.

@radioguy decomissioning is a cost center. It drains money in a constant negative. Putting that off for as long as possible increases profits. I am sure as with any company money talks very loud and that engineer that says it is a bad idea gets ignored.

I am appalled at the DOE and this government for not carrying through on it's promise.. "promise" to the commercial industry to have a functional fuel disposal storage facility for the fuel.. by putting off and putting off the YUKA mountain or some other repository the commercial industry was forced to stock pile the fuel .. "stackers in the SFP" or dry storage... at the expense of safety

@radioguy If they could be made safe and secure enough to give insurance companies the profit to risk equation they want they could get insurance. If your car was known to spontaneously combust with enough energy to take out 5 cars with you nobody would give you full coverage car insurance or the rate would be un affordable.

we have many many industries in the us that are not regulated correctly, no INCENTIVES for making emissions "clean".. like canada, the stock pile huge amounts of harmful tailings, they let lethal quantities of off waste leak and go to the aquifers... it's bad over all

if a commercial power plant exploded severly .. and spread the radioactivity over a large area like chernobyl.. it would fall on the governments hands..

@dean Right now it comes down to massive risk to dense populations through open SFPs that are overstocked or lower risk to people while in transit and in a remote facility. They will body scan people and steal their shampoo at the airport but we can't get fuel stored safely. It is moronic.

@Scilla Isn't there some form of self insurance pool in Japan for plants but it is really underfunded. Having one here would be a good idea. You now the power companies would tell everyone they would have to quadruple your rates if it happens.

geigercrowd is an approach to fill in an information gap. radiation measurements should be open data and provided by the government in an easy to access and uncensored manner. the current situation in japan shows a different picture. websites providing up-to-date meassurements are either down or don't show valid values. this is where we want to fill in. we crowdsource the meassuring to people in japan who operate and own automated or handheld geiger counters or other equipment that delivers data on radiation levels. this way we all together can try to fill the currently white map on this page with up-to-date radiation measurements that help people all over japan to assess the current risk situation. geigercrowd.net is backed by a capable content delivery network to hopefully handle more load than the other available resources that currently provide this data on the web. geigercrowd.net

@Jim Carver If they were prone to political purposeful underfunding to starve said agency or political appointees it might end up worse than private running. Really an imperfect situation I think the main issue is getting safety over profit.

So with GoJ taking over information has anyone found new sources of information? There has been nothing since the 20th. No new heat images from MOD, No tepco images. The only thing I saw was a reactor stats report yesterday.
